I have a few more.. but those are the first few. :)
I started all the lilies from bulbs and I feel totally suburban housewife for them actually growing :)

Absolutely beautiful. I love flowers but am the worst at getting them to grow or keeping them alive. Lillies are my absolute favorite, have them tattoed on my in a few places.

Last year I killed about $100 worth of azaleas.. and about $250 worth of hydrangeas... so I wasn't going to plant anything but evergreen bush stuff this year...

then I saw the asiatic bulbs at costco for like $12... and thought, what the hell.. let's try it.. I got 36 bulbs for $12... Once they started growing well... I got so excited that I tried a few other things...

My house is positioned north south.. with the backyard getting all day sun and the front yard being mostly shade.. so lots of things die easily...

but the lilies, mandevilla, bouganvilla.. and some new guinea impatiens I planted are growing like NUTS...

They look amazing. My one foray into gardening I apparantly skipped a step by not putting down some kind of weed blocker and they choked out my lillies. :(

There are a whole lot of bulb and tuber flowering plants that will outdo any weeds every season no problem. Most of these will actually choke out most small weeds themselves. Thus they can be planted and not weeded, also depending on your zone will also do fine if you forget to water, often or um ever.

Oh and your property sun exposure can be overcome pretty easy if your interested. Not only do wife and I garden, for years she ran a landscaping company until she sold it. Ever need any tips or wish to speak anything gardening you can email me.

CherryLipsRosa 05-08-2009 02:59 PM

Great stuff i wish i could do that too... i planted 3 times already and killed them all now i contracted some people to do it for me so let's hope it works this time :)

borked 05-08-2009 03:04 PM

Love the Bouganvillier - didn't know they were popular outside of south Europe/Africa

I have a deep red one, much bigger flowers but more sensitive to cold than the one you have. I love that plant - the flower looks like such a delicate leaf petal

lovely pic - thanks for sharing.

I'm focussing on the veggie patch this year ;)

I'm probably going to put some in the ground in the back next year... but this year I like doing the multi level pot thing... and it gave me peace of mind... I'll be clipping the bulbs once the petals fall off... and just throwing them in the back beds to see if they come up next year... Out front, at Halloween, we had some orange asiatics that we bought at Home Depot.. They were scraggly looking things that died off quick. We had 4 of them... There are now 13 coming up this year. So they're pretty resilient in the soil.

And I have to water everything but the Bouganvilla (or however it's spelled)... because it gets so damn hot so damn quick here... Roses die so easy... but mine seem to be okay.. just nothing pretty enough to take a pic of yet..

THANK you for the offer to email... if as it gets hotter, I need some tips on how to keep this stuff from dying... I'll email :)

Yeah the Bouganvillier is gorgeoussss... but they're really hard to maintain/keep here in the heat... they don't like a ton of water, but we're having to find some kind of balance... The one we got was a solid bush about 4 feet high.. of nothing but the deep purple flowers... at least they look deep purple in person..

I have no idea how long it'll bloom in zone 9 though.. got my fingers crossed.

Yeah, especially in pot - I've a deep red one and a deep purple one, but of a different variety - much bigger flowers, but is much less resistant to the cold that yours. They've just started to flower. If you get the water combo right, they will flower right through the entire season till late autumn. But yeah, in pots (mine are both in the same massive pot) it's really hard. I err on the too much water, that doesn't do them much harm. Too little and for sure, they'll shed the flowers. I think what's more important is the nutrition - in the pot, I give them a special liquid fertiliser "Special Mediterranean plants", that is very rich - agrume fertiliser (orange/lemon etc) will also do. Twice a month cos they use up the nutrients damn quick in the pot.

Lovely pics in any case - enjoy the garden!!
