FRESH vegetables, FRESH bread and thin sliced meats HOLD the mayo and dressing. There ya go, thats the "secret" to a good sandwich.

By saying no mayo or dressing, you're able to taste the food, not the "yawn" same old same old thing. Give it a try.

My absolute favorite sandwich is sharp Canadian chedder (4 yrs old) with Hayward's piccalilli, on white buttered crusty bread.

Since the reuben has already been mentioned I'm going to go with the king of sandwiches...

The clubhouse.

Real roast turkey, and ham, bacon, cheese, tomato and lettuce.

Ahh heaven.

I prefer mine on toasted whole wheat.

all i know is that Subway, Quizno's and Mr Sub all suck compared to making your own or getting one from a Mom and Pop restaurant.

Beaver Bob 04-09-2009 09:08 AM

If you have a Jimmy Johns in your area, give them a try.

I'm not into the whole Jimmy Johns deal like a lot of people. I don't care for the bread really. Hell I'd rather have Subway over Jimmy Johns which most people don't agree with. The only thing JJ has going is delivery if you are close enough to one of their shops.

Got curious about the cuban, had to look it up...
Quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_sandwich
While there is some debate as to the contents of a ?true? Cuban sandwich, most are generally agreed upon. The traditional Cuban sandwich starts with Cuban bread. The loaf is sliced into lengths of 8-12 inches (20-30 cm), lightly buttered on the crust, and cut in half horizontally. A coat of yellow mustard is spread on the bread. Then roast pork, glazed ham, Swiss cheese, and thinly-sliced dill pickles are added in layers. Sometimes the pork is marinated in mojo and slow roasted.

The main regional disagreement about the sandwich?s recipe is whether or not to include salami. In Tampa, Genoa salami[2] is traditionally layered in with the other meats, probably due to influence of Italian immigrants who lived side-by-side with Cubans and Spaniards in Ybor City.[5][8] In Miami, salami is left out.

In Key West, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato are usually added. These additions are often available in restaurants in Tampa and Miami, but are frowned upon by traditionalists there.[8][9]

When assembled, the sandwich is lightly toasted in a sandwich press called a plancha, which is only somewhat similar to a panini press but without grooved surfaces. The plancha both heats and compresses the sandwich, which remains in the press until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted. It is usually cut into diagonal halves before serving.

Sounds good to me.

This thread is making me hungry.

Next to a Philly cheesesteak, which oddly I never consider a sandwich but more a main meal...I vote ruben..the pastrami variety.
