Let's talk about SPAM!!!

I see so many people cry out SPAM after someone makes an announcement about a new program or talks about a new website they?re working on?I don?t get it!! What else are the boards for? I think people need to educate themselves on what spam really is. Were obviously all trying to do business and the boards are absolutely great for that! I?d be curious to know how much business those people that cry out SPAM actually make on the boards! It?s something that has always irritated me?I know there?s a specific forum for announcement, but there?s a HUGE difference between spamming and networking!

What are your thoughts?

DarkJedi 11-03-2002 10:53 AM

Well, it would be OK if member only posted 1 annoncement every 200 post or so. But it's getting ridiculous when stupid mf just come here to spam us with stupid programs,...
I do think that there should be some kind of annoncement board on gfy, where only established posters could post..

I agree. While the "drive-by" spam (a purely self-serving commercial message from some numbnutz who doesn't spend any time here) is resented, I would think we're here to learn more about the biz, and that includes knowing where you go to get traffic, who can design a site, who can process memberships and referrals, who sells what kind of content, etc., is what it's all about.

Or is this just a board for bullshit?

As for your crying about crying spam, the board IS about business and businessmen buy advertising space at 2.5 a pop...DO you think its fair to them to have joe webmaster spamming his shitty program for free? I don't...

We know you? lets hear about your program thru one announcment a month... Never heard of your ass? keep your mouth shut about your program or die like the rest

Finally catching on huh?

If you think that the boards are much more than bullshit then you are sadly mistaken. For those who rely on the spam opportunities on the boards in order to peddle their wares...They are not now, and unless they change, they never will make any real money in this biz.

There is only one board that I spam on regularly and that is because I have been asked to do so by the people who run that board. Just like spamming on the other boards, it produces little or no significant results. You want networking opportunities? Try getting out to a show once in awhile and shaking a few hands.

Only my :2 cents: and WTF do I know anyway?

Please excuse me now...I have money to make.

When it comes to the boards, there's 2 types of spam -- obvious spam and creative spam. The bottomline is DON'T BE SO OBVIOUS. Here's a quick breakdown:

Obvious spam = making too many announcements, making an announcement without having a posting "history" [ie., 100 or more posts], annoyingly huge SIGs.

Creative spam = fake piss matches, fake stats, tag team spam [1 guy posts question, another posts "answer"], long term poster aka BRAND poster [a person racks up a huge number of posts but has a sig you can click on thereby establishing himself as a board "personality"], "Standards" spam [poster issues a list of quality control items re paysite design or traffic generation--makes himself look good by association]. There's also the CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC spam [poster issues a controversial news or opinion topic and members pack the thread in with replies--in the meantime you keep seeing the sig line of the thread starter].

Creative spam -- as long as its subtle, meets a psychological need of the thread participants [entertainment, venting, aesthetics, etc], seems to be the way to go. All these creative spam types have in common is that the key SIG [either the thread starter or one of the respondent's "answers"] is clickable or if not clickable BRANDS one's services/product. It is also mildly viral, in that a "reputation" established at GFY may result in business via word of mouth or ICQ discussions amongst friends and associates.

FB, you definitely picked the right topic to start some shit :winkwink:

Drive bys aside, I like lens "one-time announcement" approach (I'm assuming that's per program, and not just one-time ever). It gives someone the opportunity to tell me why I should pick his program (which a banner ad can't do) and also I get a feel for the person behind the program (maybe). So the more creative, the better.

For example, I'm glad 12clicks made his announcement, or else I wouldn't have known about it.

:2 cents:

Funbrunette 11-03-2002 03:36 PM

Sweet! Finally some educated answers! Thanks, that's the kind of answers I was looking for! :thumbsup

It's interesting to get peoples view on the subject!

Sly_RJ 11-03-2002 03:52 PM

I hate when people only come here to post their spam for each and every program they have. Does Flynt ring a bell? How often do you see Ken, gigi, and their entourage of friends/employees? Yeh, when they're launching program number 3 of 500. Yippy!

If the given person contributes regularly to the community, it doesn't bother me at all to see an announcement of their program. In fact, it's nice to see fellow GFYers making strides to the perfect porn empire!

SPAM is a useless and fairly unedible.

Telling adult webmasters that you have something "adult" to sell them is directed marketing.

And no i will not use this opportunity to post a picture.:1orglaugh

Pimplink ... do you really think that fake piss or tag-team spam is creative? Please ...

If you're sticking it in my face for no reason, or contriving bullshit - it's spam. If it works into the flow of a thread (without needing a 14 pound sledge hammer to "make" it fit), it ain't.

I don't know what spam is, but I know it when I see it?

Oh yeah ... click my sig.

quiet 11-03-2002 07:25 PM

of course it's all bullshit. news flash.
