How much does it cost to have a baby?

I never even though about it since I live in Canada.

Just the actual birth of the baby? Not including diapers and formula?

What happens if you can't afford it?

dont you get free insurance up there? they should cover most of it.

its free if you have the baby NOT in the hospital. a public library, petting zoo, Chinese restaurant... whatever floats your boat.

seriously, probably like $3-$4k is my guess.

if you cant afford it im sure they will have the baby repo people come after you :winkwink: they will just try adn collect through collection agencies if you skip out on the bill

wiki.answers.com says $7k to $10k in Texas

JesseD 09-25-2008 08:51 AM

If I remember right - around $8,000 with doctors visits, hospital room, meds, etc.

Then about $500,000 for food, college, clothes, ...

Kelli58 09-25-2008 08:51 AM

$3 to 4k? WHAT?!! No no no no no ...... try $10,000 plus and that's doing it on the cheap and just the very basics. Hospitals will actually work out in advance payment plans for you so that when you get pregnant you pay off the cost of what it is going to cost you in monthly installments for the first 4 to 6 months. This of course doesn't cover your weekly doctor visits, prenatal pills, ultra sounds, etc. but at least the big big bill of the hospital is out of the way.

Ross 09-25-2008 08:52 AM

IT costs to have a baby in a Hospital in the USA? Damn! Doesnt cost in the UK from what I know...

MOxxx 09-25-2008 08:52 AM

I will let you know in few weeks :winkwink:

CIVMatt 09-25-2008 08:53 AM

DOnno I was in the military and it cost me $40

Fletch XXX 09-25-2008 08:56 AM

it only costs actual natural born citizens, if you are illegal immigrant its free. Citizens have to provide Social# - illegal immigrants just show up.

if people educate themself and look into the numbers it would blow your mind...

some hospitals have 70% illegal immigrants birth rates - guess who pays?

its over $70 million per year in some hostpals, all illegal immigrants

Kevin Marx 09-25-2008 09:00 AM

It's about $150,000 over the course of 18 years LOL

StuartD 09-25-2008 09:23 AM

Had 2 kids here in Canada and it cost me about $40 in total for all the parking I did. That's about it.
Hell, my wife even spent 4 solid weeks in the hospital leading up to my 2nd boy's birth, by c-section where she also had her tubes tied in the same proceedure and it still only cost me for parking.

cwd 09-25-2008 09:28 AM

Heard from a friend...first kid born in Canada, no cost...NOTHING, even with extremely complicated delivery!!! Said it felt like shoplifting walking out of there. Second one, born in Hawaii, 3500 for hospital costs, plus another 1000 for doctors fees, just for delivery, which was easy, not to mention cost for visits, etc. And that was with excellent insurance.

bronco67 09-25-2008 09:34 AM

According to Michael Moore, not only is it free, but they will pay you $20,000 and blow you.

Sosa 09-25-2008 09:38 AM

That is why you have health insurance etc for pregnancy stuff included.

health insurance in canada is not free, don't know how that rumour got started.

There is 1 health insurance company , and you pay based on how much you make.

JA$ON 09-25-2008 09:45 AM

My experience.....

Its not to bad. They start getting expensive when they hit about 4 and start taking karate, soccer and want transformers shoes etc.

nope , everyone in the hospital is doing volunteer work :winkwink: of course it costs, everything costs :) in the uk you pay for it in taxes, very similar to how canada does it, in the usa they charge you a "pay as you need it" rate, so if you aren't ever sick you dont need to waste thousands of dollars paying for other people that are :) kinda

Chris 09-25-2008 09:49 AM

100 bux
insurance copay :-D

but without the bill was something like 8k

cardinalvices 09-25-2008 09:55 AM

If you have a bunch of relatives, you will be swamped with baby wear and toys to last for the entire year. :) Birth itself is being either sponsored by the government or covered by your insurance company. It costs nothing but sleepless nights and lots of nerves.

LOL... I think the "kinda" is the operative word there :thumbsup

heymatty 09-25-2008 10:18 AM

With all the co-pays for scans, bloodwork and the delivery even with good insurance I think I paid about $1,000 just recently. The total the insurance paid was around $15,000.

The 4D scans are like $900, the anesthetist fees for the epidural $3k! Sure adds up.

All worth it though!

JayDeeZee 09-25-2008 10:28 AM

I figure about $50 should cover it.

$40 for parking

$10 for Tim Hortons coffee

tranza 09-26-2008 08:58 AM

A lot!!!

grumpy 09-26-2008 09:32 AM
