Watching PBS about China. Back when China first started preparing for the games, the tore down complete neighborhoods. 1.5 Millions lost their homes. Wow.
WTF was anyone thinking giving the games to these people? |
China looks nice on TV but it looks from inside you can see better some things

Where were they displaced to?

My parents went to china when they were giving notice to those people. They had a couple of days to pack their shit and get the fuck out. Police were patrolling and beating anyone who was littering or refusing to pack.
Good stuff. |

An old girlfriend of mine had the city (or the state?) purchase their house from them to they could build a new on ramp to a freeway. It was some time ago on the 580 in Castro Valley, California. It was a win win situation for her folks. They got more than the house was worth, and then got to move away from the freeway to a better area. |

As Rochard stated, the government might for a freeway, but they have always paid more than the property was worth in the instances I have heard of. I almost bought my first house that way. |

Also a side note to add. There was a case up North a few months ago, where a company wanted to build.
The land owner refused to sell and the courts made the owners give up their land due to "eminent domain." The reason was that the local community would benefit from the tax revenue they would receive from the new building. |
Fuck the chinese gouvernement.:321GFY

Well they gave it to the Nazi's so China shouldn't a be a surprise.
|
i have a hard time believing >10% of the population of beijing was relocated to build 16 new facilities that have a total footprint measured in acres.
i checked www.pbs.org and could not find any truth to this either. |

Seems they have been doing it gradually. I have found reports back to 2004 so far. |

And no, I am not including the railroads buying their way across the country. |

That is how eminent domain is abused. Govt claims eminent domain then hands it off to a private developer and gets a fat campaign contribution. |
