but to really deter copyright infringement, shouldn't the scare be put into those that uploaded the videos? If people start getting sued big for "sharing" videos under the whole "user submitted" website model, it could really put a dent in the piracy thing.

Youtube was a poison pill to google.
I said it before the sale and I said so after the sale:)

I am going to go so far as to predict that Google shuts Youtube down while it is modified with better copyright filters or Google closes Youtube entirelly which may be to drastic but I definatly see YoutTube going down for a while.

PS: Youtube is truly one of the biggest violations of copyright in american history.

Historically there never has been such an operation of flagrant and vast copyright theft. The news and media outlets will be saying that soon.

It's funny seeing people talk about YouTube and then porn tube sites.

Always has seemed to me that what they need is uploaders certifying that they have legal rights to distribute the material, then digitally sign it. Doesnt seem hard(?)

Good for Viacom. There needs to be some serious steps in controlling copyright infringement.

Get the systems first, get the users second. If there is no system to share under, the users will have to go back to sharing one on one. It's beyond impossible to shut down sharing when it's one seeder and 20 million sharers.

What a joke. Google is in the forefront of privacy violations, even worse than facebook. They collect everything about your behavior on line and erase none of it. Emails you delete from your gmail acocunt are not deleted, only their record in your inbox ir removed. Google sets a cookie with unique ID on your machine and everything you do is store in their ever growing database of your on line activities and they are assigned to your unique identifies. Ever wandered why it is you can't use any of google's services when you disable cookies? What a bunch of hypocrites.

I'm behind Viacom on this one. They are doing what is needed to bring down illegal Tube sites and P2P. Seems some here support piracy and some hate it and some hate it and love depending on whether they are using it on YouTube or fighting it on Redtube.

We should use this decision and sue the buggers illegally uploading porn.

As for privacy matters. If you break the law you should not have any rights of privacy. The answer is simple, don't pirate or support them and you will stay private.

This is good news for those of us who want to see illegal tube sites shut down. If youtube can be found guilty of contributory infringement then it's game on for all of the copycats.
