Like him or hate him, the man knows how to give a speech. He knows how to speak convincingly. He sounds like he knows what he is talking about. And whether he does or not is irrelevent. I happen to think he knows what he's talking about but that is a leap of faith because, honestly, how would I really know?

I went to one of his rallies. I didn't hear anything new, but I heard a guy who liked to talk and could speak exceedingly well. I heard a statesman, a diplomat. Can a statesman be corrupt? Can he be duplicious? Can he be an unmitigated asshole? Absolutely.

Regardless...a statesman and a diplomat, a guy who sounds intelligent, reasonable and speaks convincingly...that is the sort of person we need in the oval office at this moment.

My point is this Obama comment isn't even vaguely racist when taken into the context it was used. Had a white politician made a similar comment in a similar context his career would have been unscathed.

Incorrect. Thurmond got away with it because of where he represented and when. He could not start off today with the same attitude and be as successful.

I admit it was a probably a bad comparison. But, Thurmond did go on to be the longest sitting senator in us history despite is overt racist beliefs. Even into "modern times".

I just think vaguely racist comments aren't going to cause immediate destruction to a white politicians career. they will catch flak, but a career ender? Doubtful.
