Obama's Pastor: God Damn America

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/st...4443788&page=1

Quote:

Sen. Barack Obama's pastor says blacks should not sing "God Bless America" but "God damn America."

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's south side, has a long history of what even Obama's campaign aides concede is "inflammatory rhetoric," including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism."

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright's sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans.

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," he said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda's attacks because of its own terrorism.

"We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye," Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.

"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation.
I am sure many here would likely agree with most of what he has said and this kind of rhetoric will probably help him in the Democratic primaries but how will it effect him with independents and "Reagan Democrats" in the general election?

AdPatron 03-13-2008 12:20 PM

He has a point.

Im sure hes not worried about a very small fraction of Democrats who have since seen what they get when they vote Republican when they are supposed to be Dems. I say fuck em. Traitors

But I thought the appeal of Obama was his ability to get the votes of independents and conservative Democrats who often vote for Republican presidential candidates? If he runs a hard left, anti-America campaign won't that likely result in another Republican victory? :2 cents:

God doesn't bless America more or less then any other place on the planet ... unless I missed something that said worshiping money gets you favors.

If you are capable of critical thinking and forming your own opinions it will probably not effect you...

Cum&Spam 03-13-2008 12:52 PM

A little Offtopic

I see it very clearly: ppl just have to look at 1 thing. Do they want more 4 years of war around the world, failed economics, the same Bush failed policy (only with McCain in Bush's place)? i mean c'mon...
I respect McCain for his honorable past and fight for America but this is 2008 man, this is the time when Americans need the wars to end. Need more money into their pocket, better health care etc and McCain clearly can't deliver that...

Obama or Clinton should have a chance now for President. A Democrat should win.

Bush is so stupid, he makes me sick. Yesterday i was watching CNN and he was talking about economy and making a parody about how he would get money to his daughter wedding...:disgust in a time when Americans are struggling to not loose their homes, to find jobs, to pay more and more for food, this man opts to make jokes...:Oh crap

Gouge 03-13-2008 01:02 PM

Good ole' anti American hate speech at its best. But have no worries, Barack Hussein Obama's message of change and hope will solve the worlds problems.

DWB 03-13-2008 01:03 PM

I agree with him.

God damn America.

More attacks will come. And we have it coming.

pornguy 03-13-2008 01:16 PM

He has " FEW " points.

I dont think that the US really wants to build more and bigger prisons. I dont think that the US is handing out the drugs on the street corners, I dont think that the prisons are ONLY filled with blacks, and thats the way he is trying to make it look.

As for the other things. Some of that is surly debatable.

I have posted many times that I always vote for who I think will run our country for the better. To me there is nothing more bi partisan than voting for the President of our great country. If the Republicans choose to run someone who does not have true Repblican beliefs and way of governing, I then have no problem crossing party lines and doing whats best for my country. Why should I support someone who doesnt represent the qualities of a GOOD president? Why do I vote for a Republican when he is running on a NON CONSERVSTIVE platform, like insanely costly wars? Its called a FREE country. Remember that? Or has the bullshit clouded your eyes so heavily?

jalami 03-13-2008 01:33 PM

It's pretty stupid to say "God damn America." First Amendment allows him to say so, but it doesn't negate the fact that he is stupid. Problem here is equating America's government with its people. If he wanted to say "God damn the current administration" that's definitely a valid denigration but doesn't sound quite as good from the pulpit.

The problem I see here is The U.S.A. deals with drugs as a criminal issue, not a health concern. The infamous War on Drugs helped reverse the post 1950's forward momentum. We are now in a new Cold War and my fear is the War on Drugs that begat the War on Terror will have a red-headed step son (no, not Big D) called the War Against Media.

Let's face, information leads to that ugly thing called thinking.

However much we see disagreements on this board, most of us are for freedom of choice, speech, information and...damn it it's nice to smoke a fatty and rejoice in the fact this (the USA) is STILL the greatest nation on earth.

And I say that as a Canadian that is sickened by cuture, religion, intolernace and the fact JenniDahling lives so far away.

Obama's supporters are going to lose the election for him.

Sarah_Jayne 03-13-2008 02:46 PM

So, take away the 'god damn America' bit and he does have points that are valid but of course people won't move past the shock phrase.

Who represents a people if not their leaders?

Our leaders have power through us. We permit them to do what they do.

The American people are guilty of believing in their leaders. Believing what they say without question. Guilty of believing all that Disney shit they tell you when your young. Its just time to make this a government of the people like it was supposed to be in the first fucking place. Nobody deserves that man. You're just doing these fuckers a favor and spreading the fear

Snake Doctor 03-13-2008 08:35 PM

I used to be catholic, and one of the priests from my church molested a child....therefore you should never vote for me for president.

GetSCORECash 03-13-2008 08:38 PM

A Liberal... Pat Robertson

These guys all talk shit, and their flocks listen to every word they say.

God Bless America!

Sarah_Jayne 03-13-2008 10:57 PM

I almost think people are making his point for him.

When I say "we" I say it because I was born in that land and am a citizen for the time being. The USA totally has it coming, and lots of it. Lots and lots and lots of it. The USA has been doing wrong around the world for longer than I have been alive and now they are beginning to reap what they sow. That's just the way shit works, like it or not.

I didn't make the rules, nor do I care to play the game. I simply know what it is and what is to come and thank God I no longer live and support a failing system.

I am an expat by choice and will never live in the USA again. I am not now nor was I ever a patriot. Don't want to be. I prefer to think of myself as larger than a simple "american" and consider myself a human in the world, without borders or rules that keep me from being kind to fellow man on my terms, not the terms of some leader or government that tells me what I can and can not do. Fuck that and fuck them. I am a slave to them now. They may own me on paper at the moment, but that will change in the near future.

It's going to get a LOT worse before it gets better for the USA.

While in theory I agree with you, in reality I don't. Go ahead and try to stop anything that is going on. Start a movement and act on something. Defy paying your taxes or refuse to go to war if you are in the military (or if you are drafted), then see what we permit them to do.

It used to be a government for the people, by the people. Now... we are just along for the ride. :Oh crap

Did Obama say it? Is Obama's pastor going to sit in the white house? I think not, why this is even news is beyond me. Did they ever do stories about Bush's pastor or any other president's? Suprised ABC would stoop so low as to drag in a story like this.

besides that the guy is for the most part right..

Give this man a free car and a house to shut him the fuck up!

nico-t 03-14-2008 06:35 AM

voters only see 'god damn america' so this will hurt obama more than it will help him. Dumb ass pastor.

I was thinking today that in a sick and twisted way this might actually help Obama.

Only because right now 13% of Americans think he is a muslim, that number is up from 8% a month ago...so the internet rumors about his background are hurting him with some voters....if they keep playing the tape of a pastor at a Christian church where Obama is a member....then he can both distance himself from the pastor guy, while reinforcing the fact that he is a christian.

May end up being a net gain of a point or two in the polls when it's all said and done.

pocketkangaroo 03-14-2008 05:05 PM

And the pastor McCain calls an "ally" is a fucking nut too. He claimed Hurricane Katrina was God's way of punishing New Orleans for allowing homosexual parades and other levels of sin. He said that God was taking land from the US for not supporting Israel enough. The guy said that the Jews disobedience is what caused them to be killed during the holocaust. Even Catholics are in his aim as he called the religion "The Great Whore".

Point is, who gives a fuck what these people think? I don't give a shit what Obama's pastor, maid, or hair stylist thinks. I don't give a shit what McCain's driver, accountant or even wife thinks. I'm voting for the guy, not their supporters.

In fact, being agnostic, I'd be more inclined to be upset that these guys are still turning to religion after much of it has been disproven.

DWB 03-14-2008 07:27 PM

i dont see how some of you an even disagree with what the man said. the guy is spot on.

i think its insane anyone would hold something like this against obama. who fucking cares. its not the pastor who is running for pres. yet this and guy who gets caught hiring a whore is all anyone can talk about, when there are serious REAL issues out there that need to be addressed.

my god america has its head up its own ass.

tell that to the 100s of 1000s of civilians we have been dropping bombs on over the past few years.

we are just breeding terrorists now. its only a matter of time before we have our asses handed to us by them or heaven help us when a few sleeper cells are called to duty that are already sitting in the usa with a suitcase nuke.
