I have a very simple question for you 2 specific but all other gun nuts feel free to answer it as well.

For you idiots your number 1 reason to own a gun is "self protection".

Now as studies showed and anybody with a iq above 80 can realize is that having a gun in your house is more likely to cause harm to you or your family than that you will ever need to do defend yourself...but ok, thats an old topic and you will simply ignore it. The other excuse is if you take away the guns through law then only the bad guys will have the guns. Yup, thats totally correct. Now finally my question and please please please just try to answer this without all the bs you guys normally come up with:

What is more dangerous? A country with lets say 50 million people where only a part of the criminals have guns (so in reality thats s pretty damn low number. That low that the chances of you running into one ever is almost 0) or where 50% the population has a gun for self defense (25 million people owning a gun so basically everywhere you are there are also people with guns).

So once again the question is not can swimmingpools kill people too but: whats more safe - a few criminals having a gun or half the country.

Take a look at the swiss....all of them own a weapon. In fact its one of the most heavily armed countries in the world. Then take a look at their crime rate.

Franck: I am Canadian and I was brought up with my dad who was a very liberal person. He has a shotgun in his house, and another firearm we never saw or knew about but he said he had.

The reason he has the gun is because "If someone is crazy enough to endanger my family, I am crazy enough to kill them."

The guns were never loaded, never played with. I KNEW my dad had the guns and I knew where the shotgun was. Yet I am not an idiot and had no desire to put it up to my head or anyone elses and fire a round.

I own a handgun for home protection for the very same reason. I taught my wife who had never even SEEN a gun in person (her dad was a marine, too for fuck sakes :/) to fire it, and she is now a fan of my theory.

You cannot compare Switzerland. First of all, gun ownership isn't even half of what it is in america, and furthermore, Switzerland is a rich, well-developed and isolated country that has virtually none of the social problems the US has. Gun ownership and a country like America is an explosive and fatal combination.

Dirty F, even if one successfully made the argument that banning guns nationwide would reduce crime and murder in the aggregate (it surely would), that still doesn't mean that fact alone should lead one to conclude that a banning gun ownership is something that should be done. Other factors such as individual choice and freedoms, as written into the Bill of Rights are important to consider also.

Of course one could also make the argument that alcohol and tobacco should be banned outright just because it would save lives but few are making that argument...

I think the comparison between lots of gun-related deaths on one side and the ridiculous illusions of 'protecting freedom', 'invasion protection' etc etc on the other side is pretty clear to those without deluded minds.

10-20x as many children under the age of 4 drown in a pool as are killed by a firearm in the US. Are parents of young children bad for having a pool? for the record, I have a pool and a 2 year old. My pool is locked up behind a "child-proof" gate that I had installed. It would seem to me that locking your guns up would be an equivalently safe action. Thoughts?

Personally I don't like guns. I can leave my front door unlocked on my street without worry. The gun attitude up here is different than in the US. Bowling for Columbine might have been a lot of tongue-in-cheek, but a lot of it was right on the mark too.
