$3 ATM Fees?

Quote:

Consumers who rely on ATMs for quick cash access may find that getting their money actually costs them more as banks raise their ATM fees. The financial institutions, which already generate $10 billion a year in revenue from what they charge people for accessing their accounts from other banks' ATMs, have increased the fees in response to a poorer economy.

One expert said banks are relying on consumers to get them through the weak economic time.

"They're looking for ways to make up for the losses and nickel and diming appears to be the only way they can do it," Consumer Affairs analyst Joseph Enoch said.

Today, the average ATM fee is $1.78, while five years ago it cost a little more than a $1 to retrieve money from a bank with which you didn't have an account.

they will continue to raise it and not much anyone can do.

its just like rent in la, if you are renting they raise your rent a certain percentage every year that is allowed under the law, and there isnt anything you can do to stop it.

RedShoe 01-28-2008 04:11 PM

I forget who it is, but one banking company just had a commercial on where thy pay your atm fees for you

ADL Colin 01-28-2008 04:11 PM

That was a stock trading company, Schwab or someone.

The only time I use an ATM is if I need money at night, $3. is a deal.

Elli 01-28-2008 04:18 PM

I hardly use ATMs any more. Debit all the way.

Brad Mitchell 01-28-2008 04:18 PM

Yeah I thought it was just a one off thing, I hit a Chase atm the other day and thought $3, WTF.. That sucks!

Funny how this differs from one market to another. In Poland you usually get to use ATMs free of charge at least within the bank's own ATMs (and often without any limits so all withdrawals are free). But then again, it's still way more popular to pay by cash here than with a card.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 01-28-2008 04:20 PM

My bank offers ATM use for free as long as it's their ATM. Otherwise, I don't use it unless it's an emergency. I do almost everything with my debit card.

J. Falcon 01-28-2008 04:38 PM

Isn't $3 what epass charges when you use their card at an ATM?

shahab6 01-28-2008 04:39 PM

Then don't use ATM, when you go to the bank, withdrawal enough money to last you for a few weeks.

dready 01-28-2008 05:04 PM

If you only take out $20, that's 15%, robbery.

severe 01-28-2008 05:07 PM

my bank refunds atm fees from other banks and dont charge their own.
paying fees to get your money, especially electronically where nothing is involved is just dumb.

I may be wrong, but don't you get charged the ATM fee for debits also? I always heard that choosing credit avoids these fees.

farkedup 01-28-2008 05:09 PM

I do debit card transactions at the walmart self checkout... buy 4 packs of ramen noodles and have 1 transaction per package meaning I take a few minutes to checkout 4 times and take $100 cash back EVERY time and it costs me less than $.5 for for $400

BUT I actually eat the ramen noodles...

no debit fees with paypal or any of my other bank accounts... if your bank charges you for this FUCK them and open a new account

F-U-Jimmy 01-28-2008 05:12 PM

$3.00 is not very high. I was buying a club in San Diego that had 2 ATMs generating $400,000.00 a year (profit) in ATM revenue alone, yes that no typo. They charged $6.00 per transaction even if it was just for $100.00 so everyone drew out the maximum $300.00 and most got spent at the club :pimp

No, my account is at a credit union with a "no fee" account, so there are no debit fees. My bf is at Royal Bank, which charges him 50 cents for every debit transaction. Boo to the banks!

It costs the bank the same amount if you take out $20 or $200.

teksonline 01-28-2008 05:17 PM

It doesnt cost the bank anything, it saves the bank's time as you'd be requiring a teller's assistance without it.. its a crock of shit scam which is why banks use it to promote their own network....

It's your fucking money, whats next, withdrawel from your savings account
and pay a $5 fee? LOL

But what I really find amusing and law enforcement should really check in onthis is these fucking Arab Gas Station ATM machines, the ones that charge the $2 fee.... and mysteriously in 30-60 days you find a $8 fee on your card statement for some oversea network service charge... The arabs know their scams!

Nope. Not for any bank I've used, at least.

The only diff I've noticed is "debit" will usually post right away while "credit" takes a few days...

I've also been told I have a line of credit on my debit card, so I'm sure something there translates over to the 'credit' side of things - but I've never bothered using it in that fashion.

I'm not a banker, so I'm probably missing something here, but...

I'm thinking the guy that stocks the machine, the maintenance guy who fixes the thing, the security measures (including any development and production time for such measures) that have gone into the thing, the network costs, the hardware cost of the machine itself... even the property cost of where the machine is located probably costs the bank a sizable amount more than 'nothing.'

A lot of banks let their account-holders use their ATM's for free (all of mine do, anyways)... so (without considering the extra revenue that ATM-oriented marketing might have generated for the bank) that only leaves those who haven't planned otherwise and find themselves needing to grab some more cash - at the exact spot of that the banks have bothered to install their ATMs... to foot the bill of those extra costs.

Like I said, the closest I've come to working in a bank is buying a CD, so I'm probably missing something - feel free to point it out.

With that said, maybe $3 - $6 isn't so much.... I always consider me paying an ATM fee as a "dumbass tax" anyways.

NosMo 01-28-2008 06:27 PM

Funny that is way lower that most ATM fee's I see. but most ATM's I see are in casinos.....But this is just another reason I don't trust banks.....

bank of america charges non BofA customers $3, most other ones around here are $2.

when i was in college there was a FREE one. i dont hit up the ATM that much anymore, i take advantage of the free ATM at the store. buy a pack of gum and get $200 cash back

fuck that shit!

GatorB 01-28-2008 07:47 PM

Back in 1986 when I got my first bank account the fee for using a non-bank ATM was 25 cents. That's TOTAL. Now the ATM charges $2 and my bank charges $2 for a total of $4.

After Shock Media 01-28-2008 07:57 PM

My own bank has atm's everywhere and several are drive through so they are no cost to me.

Now if you want to use another banks ATM machine or worse yet a privatly owned ATM machine then all bets are off and they are allowed and I feel encouraged to fuck the person using them.

Though like most when in Vegas or a casino and you want some cash right then and now, be ready to eat it big anyways. Just remember to drink several additional free drinks to get compensated.

Then as other say use the cash back feature on purchases made in stores with your debit card.

Yet it does make it funny for all you epassporte users that have to pay epassporte I think 3.00 and the ATM an additional 3.00, and since many ATM's have a 300.00 limit you are giving up a pretty nice chunk of change for your 300.00

lots of places are starting to charge a debit fee now too. Granted, they are still less than the $4 fee that casino's charge.

GTS Mark 01-28-2008 08:11 PM

The charge at the ATM at the Spearmint Rhino in Las Vegas is 10% of whatever you withdraw.

I withdrew $500 and it cost me $50. :(

Yes I know I am retarded... LOL!

Fap 01-28-2008 08:12 PM

I paid a $5 ATM fee in NYC once.. that hurt when i only needed to take out $20..
