SAFE Act Passed - Another horror story for the adult industry

http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/06/h...ages-ron-paul/

The new bill requires everyone (that includes you and Starbucks) offering an open WiFi connection to the public to be on the lookout for report known "illegal images" and "obscene" cartoons and drawings. The reporting requirement extends to cover social networking sites, ISPs, and email providers. Failing to dutifully report what you've seen (or haven't seen but are unwittingly complicit in) could leave your data seized and in debt from fines of up to $300,000.

Only 2 it turns out (Presidential candidate, Ron Paul being one of them) voted against it.

How the fuck is the average idiot or Starbucks going to know what is illegal? They might come across Little Lupe or another 18+ model in a legal tee site and figure the shit is illegal when it is not, which will cause a shit storm and unecessary raids. Also, I thought toons could not be found to be obscene? Something change with that?

Well, it fucking passed, under the radar. Looks like it is too late to do anything. Where the fuck is the FSC on these issues?

sumphatpimp 12-06-2007 11:57 AM

why screw around with Starbucks? too many people around and the connection is slow as shit.
look up the address for your congressman, they always have good fast connections. just park outside his home and upload away!
you just got to love it when idiots run a country.

RyuLion 12-06-2007 12:02 PM

another can of worms..:(

G-Rotica 12-06-2007 12:04 PM

wtf?....

ModelPerfect 12-06-2007 12:24 PM

So it doesn't require proactive monitoring, so wouldn't that actually reduce what is caught by the ISPs? I mean, they already don't filter because (to my understanding from talking to a top technician at Comcast) filtering some controlversial material and missing others opens them up to liability for the content they didn't filter (i.e. the argument can be raised that any filtering implies an acceptability for whatever is not filtered...and they can't catch it all). So, because of this new law, wouldn't they be less inclined to find *anything* out of fear of leaving themselves open to liability for whatever they missed?

Satan 12-06-2007 12:26 PM

thats the stupidest thign I ever heard, Im sure it will be gone soon

woj 12-06-2007 12:29 PM

another stupid law..

L-Pink 12-06-2007 12:32 PM

So if the Starbuck goons show up at my door I have to show them my 2257 doc's?

Wizzo 12-06-2007 12:34 PM

It only passed the house and really not a big deal, It doesn't require proactive monitoring, it just requires that if the starbucks kid for example see's someone surfing for kiddie porn at Starbucks to report them which you should anyways... They pass stupid shit like this ever year before a big election cycle so they can have something to brag about to get elected again, there's no real meat to this bill... :pimp

MrPinks 12-06-2007 12:36 PM

I still don't understand the toon image deal

nAtuRaLbEautY 12-06-2007 12:43 PM

gornyhuy 12-06-2007 01:04 PM

why does everyone always use CP as the example?

the article states

note.... "cartoons" "drawings"

nothing about CP, this is aimed at anything obscene. Dont play into their hands by using CP as the example.

So this isn't about combing through logs? It's just if you see it on someone's laptop as you walk by you need to report it?

anarchy 12-06-2007 01:59 PM

Spy on your neighbour

Socks 12-06-2007 02:04 PM

Isn't this great news for shutting down tube sites, torrent sites and pirate posting boards, who blatantly turn a blind eye to monitoring their communities?

PornMogul 12-06-2007 02:08 PM

wow this domain affects me in a VERY positive financial way. I own highschoolwifi.com, collegewifi.com, universitywifi.com and restaurantwifi.com

Anyone interested in buying some kickass domains that are now gold with these new laws and the govt spending money on it.

Unfortunately the enforcement side of the house is running a little low on resources :(

How exactly does this law appreciate the value of your domains?

Gianna_CECash 12-06-2007 03:20 PM

to many rules

sortie 12-06-2007 03:40 PM

The way I read the law it only applies to obvious cp.

Cartoons and drawings must be of cp.

If someone put cp on my network than I'm glad to report them and fuck them up, but I don't want to be held accountable if I miss something that slipped through.

just a punk 12-06-2007 04:36 PM

I'm happy I'm not American, I don't live there and I don't have to follow all the stupid laws they create.

Catalyst 12-06-2007 05:30 PM

I think this.. and other laws will soon limit adult in some major ways..

pornguy 12-06-2007 05:36 PM

My fear is not the part that we have heard about, but about the parts of it that we have NOT heard about. They like to sneek things though under other bills.

Its amazing.

Well... this was basically an attempt to sneak this completely under the radar, the act was rushed through under a procedure reserved for noncontroversial legislation, never voted on in committee, and was never posted (in its modern October 10th form) for public review.

tony286 12-06-2007 07:38 PM

The question that comes to my mind is the obscenity part. As we know its a subjective thing at best. Say your at a hotel using their wifi to update your sites or your blog, can they fuck with you over that?

Brujah 12-06-2007 07:48 PM

aico 12-06-2007 07:49 PM

obviously the people who made that law have no idea about how the internet works.

D 12-06-2007 07:52 PM

meh. We should fire our government next election.
