MIAMI -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died, a day after he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein.

He said Taylor's father called him around 5:30 a.m. to tell him the news.

"His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans."

He said he did not know exactly when Taylor died.

Doctors had been encouraged late Monday night when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand. But Sharpstein said he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital and that he wasn't sure how he had squeezed the nurse's hand.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

The 24-year-old Redskins safety was shot early Monday in his home in the upper leg, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss.

From all the news reports I've been reading it really does sound like the guy should have invested in a decent home security system and put some damn bars on the windows. From the sounds of it crooks were breaking in at will.

this wasn't just a robbery gone wrong i don't think - we'll find out in the weeks to come who did it and why. these guys come from violent upbringings and once they reach the NFL they still have the thug hangers on and party with the wrong crowd.

What bothers me the most about this story is the "family friend". Every time he opens his mouth, he stresses, not just mentions, but STRESSES, it happened during a break in. A couple of times, the comment wasn't even relevant to the question or comment. Makes me wonder if they are trying to hide something. Maybe the girlfriend shot him?

it *could* be anything. my point is that there is a huge problem for black pro athletes, the vast majority who do come from the 'hood', and cutting the ties to the thugs and friends who have been attached to them since they were starring for their junior high teams. and when there is an event like this in the vast majority of cases you'll see that the guy was surrounded by a bad crowd. think Michael Vick, think Tank Johnson, think Ray Lewis, think Allen Iverson and on and on. in this case maybe it won't be a similar situation - so far very little is known about this case.

girlfriend didn't kill him - she made the 911 call from her cell - she tried using the regular phone but the line had been cut. she'd have to think pretty fast to do something like that to try to cover up what she did.
