I will no longer eat fast food or drink beer or mixed drinks.

It has now been exactly one week of me sticking to my new lifestyle plan. I won't call it a diet as it isn't, it's more just a few simple things I changed.

[
  • I won't drink beer anymore. I will only drink wine and/or straight alcohol on the rocks (and much less of it as I should get drunk much faster).
  • I will never eat late at night or after a heavy night of drinking anymore.
  • I will eat 5-6 meals per day no exception. I used to have 2-3 per day (often skipping breakfast then eating lunch, dinner and late-night)
  • I will stop eating at fast food places unless it offers somewhat healthy choices (tuna or chicken Quiznos, etc...)
  • I will eat a lot more protein, less fat and less carbs than I have before. I will try for 40% protein, 40% carb, 20% fat.
  • I will try and drink a lot more water as I don't think I drink as much as I should.

It has now been one full week I have stuck to this plan and it's getting to become habit/easy to follow :)

I've actually been eating closer to 50% protein, 30% carb and 20% fat. I've had a minimum of 5 meals and often 6, not eating anything past 9pm or so.

Next week I will start to exercise on my home equipment once I'm allowed to (just had surgery so can't yet). I will also start playing Lacrosse every Sunday.

Few tips I learnt from talking to friends and my own net research for those of you trying to get in shape:
  • Try and eat 1g of protein per pound of body weight per day
  • Never eat after drinking alcohol, as the alcohol doesn't actually make you fat (only like 5% of it gets absorbd as fat) but it will produce acetate that will cause the fat in what you eat afterwards to be totally absorbed.
  • Sometimes, you can't get enough protein form food alone while trying to keep the carbs/fat down. I recommend GNC Pro Performance 50g Slam drinks. I drink two per day (easy to bring to the office and drink as two of my meals a day). Depending on the flavor, they are about 1-2g fat, 8-12g carb and 50g protein. That's a nice little 100g protein boost per day.

Next time most of you see me I think you'll notice a big difference physically :winkwink:

good luck with it :)

Good for you! Keep drinking water and don't get lazy with your food choices. Fast food really is just being to lazy to eat correctly.

D 11-03-2007 01:30 PM

No beer. bah.

Wouldn't be worth living, imho.

Spunky 11-03-2007 01:30 PM

The trick is staying with it..I exercise every other day and try to watch the calories but I can't stop drinking beer..I refuse lol

2012 11-03-2007 01:31 PM

That sounds like a great plan. Maybe try switching from Coffee to Tea too since you're going all out :D

Yeah I agree...I've managed to find a lot of high-protein stuff that's easy to make like low-fat chili, veggie-burger meat, cottage cheese, soy/turkey hot dogs, etc... stuff that tastes good to me too so that's making it easy.

At restaurants I'm going only for steaks/chicken now as opposed to pasta etc...

I actually don't drink either. Tea I'll have form time to time but that's about it. Don't drink soft drinks either unless it was in a mixed drink heh.....mostly when I'm at home I only drink water, milk or juices.

Luckily they don't make any beers I really like locally in Costa Rica and it's hard to find good imported Euro beers, so stopping beer won't be very hard at all.

BOSS1 11-03-2007 01:36 PM

in time you can be one of the 300

Yeah... not a whole lot of good beers native to South/Central America... and if you're not getting imports, I can maybe understand that.

Still... I'd make sure I don't live where I couldn't get ahold of the occasional Duvel, Unibroue, Bass, or Sierra Nevada, at least... :-D

For what it's worth, no alteration in my diet with regular exercise is working for me. I've shaved off 1.4 pounds a week for the last 9, and no plans in stopping until I'm down to my ideal weight.... with nothing more that 20 minutes of cardio 8 times a week (2 times a day for 4 days per).... and like I said, I still eat whatever I want.

But then, I don't eat fast food to begin with... and I'm sure stopping that helps.

But no beer... /shudder... hehe... good luck, man.

We had a pseudo-german brewery here that made great dark beers like Chivo Blanco or Baron Rojo but it kept running out of beer as their staff forgot to order hops when in season, etc...and went out of business :upsidedow

We have a few rare spots that get Amsterdam, Duvel, Becks, Hoegarden...not much beyond that though. Lately when I had been drinking beer it was Carlsburg or Carlsburg Elephant which most local bars started carrying.

For exercise, I'm going to try but I hate exercise, it's boring. I don't mind it when it's playing a sport, like hockey or lacrosse (thus why I'm joining a lacrosse league here as our weekly floor hockey team can never find enough players). I also love ATVing and Rafting, just can't do them often enough...

Giving up the things you like is not the way to do it. Learning how to consume those things in moderation is the key.

I drink beer, eat mcdonalds, and love red bull vodka's....but I don't do any of those things in excess. Allowing me to be 6'1 215lbs...with under 10% body fat.

smutnut 11-03-2007 03:09 PM

I'm drinking right now, and you made me want to go to 'Jack in the Crack' and get one those super sloppy double heart attack burgers with extra cheese and chili sauce!

Oracle Porn 11-03-2007 03:20 PM

hehe lunch, dinner and late-night sounds too familiar.

Once I speed up my metabolism and have dropped to my healthy weight I know I can start adding back in some of those things, but right now I would rather not as they would just slow down my goals.

The other thing is I've always preferred hard alcohol > beer and ate fast food mostly out of convenience not taste. So I'm not really missing much.

My two favorite food additives are hot sauces and vinegar, so luckily for me both those things are usually 0 or very very few calories and no problem to use as often as I want. :)

I'll throw in my change...

3 months ago almost to the day, I made a lifestyle change. I no longer eat red meat, pork and I only eat chicken/turkey if it's mixed into something. I no longer can eat chunks of meat, as I personally am turned off by it now.

I weight train 4 days a week (isolated groups 3 days, and circuit on the 4th), I do 30-45 mins on the elliptical machine 5 days a week and I monitor my diet closely. I consume no more than 1840 calories a day (this include 6 meals a day), I drink no less than 8 glasses of water a day. Most of my caloric intake is fruits, veggies, bean and soy based products, fish and grains.

To make a long story short, I went from 188 lbs to 159. Not only am I dropping weight, but I am putting the muscle on. Sure our approach is a bit different, but if you stick to this, you'll be in amazing shape within a few months. I can only imagine what a full year of training like this will do for me. :)

You should try 2 days on 1 off in a 6 day cycle finalizing with a 2 day off rest period that makes an 8 day week with pushing muscles, pulling muscles, and legs. I don't care if Mike Mentzer lost to Arnold in the Olympia, that was all politics:1orglaugh

GrouchyAdmin 11-03-2007 03:57 PM

Yeah, I totally buy this.

papill0n 11-03-2007 04:07 PM

You are going to feel so much better Varius - good for you man.

Don't forget 6 serves of vegies a day!

In a way I do this... I don't go straight through and I break it all up. I usually try and take go 2 days weight training, day odd, 2 days, 1 off and if I do go the 5th, I hit it pretty light. The cardio is more for my lungs. I have asthma and snowboard season is coming, so I need to be in some solid shape so I don't pass out on the mountain :)

You're doing a lot better than me. I smoke and take long walks. I just remember that shit from high school when I was into bodybuilding and everything.

God Bless I got caught up in the me generation just as the flower children were bailing out and leaving the country to the republicans:1orglaugh

Update:

Things are coming along nicely. People have started to see the physical difference and I notice all my t-shirts that were a bit tight are now much looser :thumbsup

Tomorrow is two weeks and going.

I love Costa Rica but their cuisine leaves a lot to be desired.

smutnut 11-09-2007 11:57 AM

I'm sucking down the booze right now and it's just eleven O'Clock. The only thing that would make this day better is a nice fat juicy line of blow or meth:1orglaugh

Yeah I'm not a fan of bland rice and beans either heh....I buy my groceries form Auto-mercado or Pricesmart where they bring in american brands and products, etc...

For restaurants luckily there are enough of mot types of cuisine around.
