I Almost Died in Vegas

Hey guys/girls -

some of you know me - some don't, however I want to share this story with you about my recent trip to Las Vegas. It was from the recent post I made on SteakandCheese.com:

So as most of you know, last weekend I went to Las Vegas with Dick (freakhole.com) to gamble and get as fucked up as possible. It was a pretty good trip, besides a few hiccups that came up along the way. The first problem that popped up was when I went to check in for my flight to Las Vegas and they told me that even though I bought my tickets 4 months in advanced, they had over sold the flight and I'd have to hope for a stand by ticket. Luckily someone gave up their seat for 2 round trip tickets to use anytime that they wanted, but in my opinion what good are free vouchers when they can't even get people who bought tickets a seat on the plane. In fact AirTran fucked us so bad, that my best friend that was supposed to meet us in Vegas never even made it because they kept delaying his flights and finally they delayed his flight so long that he wouldn't have made his connecting flight in Atlanta. Their solution to this problem was to make him stay overnight in Atlanta, at his cost, and catch another plane the following afternoon, and then they still couldn't guarantee him that he could get a seat on that plane. It was a fucking nightmare and needless to say I will never fly AirTran again. So everything else went as planned. I met Dick at the airport; we had lunch, then hit the hotel. The hotel was average. I've stayed at much nicer places, but Dick talked me into staying at this particular because he thought it was a great place to stay. I mean it was oaky, but I would have much preferred to stay at the MGM Grand or The Mandalay Bay. So Friday night we got wasted on the Casino floor and gambled away a few hundred bucks before calling it a night. We were jet-lagged and needed to get ready for the rest of the weekend. Saturday night started out great. We went down and had a nice lunch/early dinner, had a few drinks and gambled some more money. I won about $500.00 on Roulette and then we headed back to the room at about 11:00 P.M to freshen up; I reeked of nasty cigarette smoke and cheap whores.

At about 11:45 P.M we left the room and went to the elevators. There were some guys there that we had met earlier, so we talked as we waited for the elevators. After a few minutes the elevator came and picked us up (we were on the 15th floor). The elevator made a stop at floor 10 and picked up 5 gay Mexicans. Then around floor number 6, the elevator started to shake and then all of a sudden it started sliding down extremely fast. After sliding about a floor, the emergency brakes kicked in and we came to an abrupt stop. You should have seen the look on all of our faces, it was fucking priceless. So of course we assumed that it would only take a few minutes for the elevator to re-set. After about 5 minutes, I pried the elevator doors open only to be greeted by a block wall. We all thought it was fucking hilarious, so we all started taking pictures of us in front of the block wall. We then called the operator on the emergency elevator phone. I'm sure that the operator thought we were pranking them. I'm sure a lot of drunken people call up and say they are stuck in the elevator. She told us that the elevator stopped because we didn't use our room keys to activate it, but that wasn't true. So she walked us through a bunch of things to try and finally she told us that she'd call the management. This was 15-20 minutes after the elevator stopped, so we were a bit concerned.

So after an hour of us being trapped in the elevator they kep telling us that they had to call an engineer out to look at it and see what happened. So were basically told to just site and wait, that there was nothing they could do. Finally I asked one of the gay Mexicans to call 911 because the hotel NEVER bothered to. I think they just wanted to handle it in-house so no reports had to be filed. So after an hour and a half, the firefighters and rescue came out and pried open one of the maintenance hatches in the shaft above us and calmed us all down. They were the only ones who told us what was happening; before they arrived we basically were just treated like shit from the management staff. It was a fucking nightmare.

Two hours later, they finally decided to send us some water after we asked them more than a dozen times. I guess they couldn't figure out that since the engineer was on top of the car checking it out, that he could reach through and hand us water. Fucking geniuses.

Two and a half hours later, they finally started to tell us that they knew what the problem was and that they would have it fixed soon. They said they had two plans; one was to hand crank the elevator to the maintenance hatch or set up anchors in the shaft and take us out one by one with ropes. After a few minutes they told us that they were going to try and crank us out that we'd have to hold on because it was going to be rough. It wasn't that bad, but what freaked me out was when they got us almost to the exit and I heard over one of their radios "uhh, hold on a second, we hear something from the shaft that we don't like". I have never been so freaked out in all my life. I seriously thought we were going to fall to our deaths. After a few seconds they jacked us up just enough so we could one by one climb out. Waiting for us was 75 firemen, a case of water, the hotel manager and the head of security, who just so happened to be Steve from the Jerry Springer Show's brother (no lie).

I won't go into any more details because we are filing a lawsuit against the hotel. I'd love to tell you how we were treated and whatnot, but I have to talk to an attorney and find out what I can and can't say. But until then, check out these pictures of us in the elevator. Keep in mind these were all taken in the first few minutes, which is the reason we are smiling.

oh, I don't want to go into that right now, don't want to say something that could be used against me later, but I think Dick is suffering the same things as I am.

Airlines overbooking flights is unfortunately a standard practice, on average a certain percentage of people flake per flight so they deduct a safety margin and overbook by that amount. Since it's an average there are going to be times when too many people really do show up. It sucks but if they didn't do that and inconvenience the small percentage of people who cop it then you'd be paying more for your ticket.

Glad to hear you're ok. Let us know what happens with the lawsuit...

you have NO idea. They were freaking out like some bitches, and they were the flaming kind of gay. Constantly bitching and yelling at everyone trying to get us out. WE were even sexually harassed when they told us to "take off our shirts" because it was getting out. :helpme

we were saying that as well. They say there is some sort of "bond" you form with people in those kinds of situations, and god knows where that could have ended up. Maybe a huge elevator orgy.

Big_D 09-09-2007 11:05 AM

pure craziness

Jace 09-09-2007 11:15 AM

dude, you should have free stays at that hotel for LIFE, LOL

did they offer you ANYTHING?

Semi-Retired-Dave 09-09-2007 11:18 AM

That's a crazy story, I don't know how you opened the doors, they usually don't open that easy, there is a switch you need to click that is usually hidden up on top to disable the doors.

Good think nobody was claustrophobic. I think I would have tried to get up into the hatch or something.

Great Read.

rowan 09-09-2007 11:22 AM

I got stuck in an elevator once, but it was our own fault: we were impatient and literally packed in people to see what would happen. Hilarity ensued as we were crammed in there for about 90 mins. I think there were about 15 people in an elevator rated for 9 max, the tech was able to raise us electrically without any obvious effort so I guess there must have been some sort of safety switch that was tripped.

Wouldn't it suck being the guy who gets called out to free people from elevators?

one of the flaming gay dudes claimed to be Claustrophobic - but he didn't freak out too much. The doors were pretty easy top open, but we had to use our feet to keep them open for air.

Can you teach me teh secret Jew handshake so I can get into this underground that you speak of? A Jew could get me enough money to buy an island, and a life time supply of bagels.

Admitting that you yanked open the doors might hurt your chances at a successful lawsuit, no? wouldn't they be just as likely to use the excuse that those actions caused the problem?

doubtful, the elevator wasn't air conditioned, and the only air we could really get was coming from the shaft after we opened the doors.
