Actually, very few soldiers' lives were lost "freeing" Iraq. Most were lost staying in Iraq while the Iraqi people were trying to kick you out.

Ehm, opinion polls were done before the invasion. Iraqis, both living abroad as well as in Iraq, were strongly opposed to the invasion. Although a majority opposed Saddam, they were afraid of the deaths an invasion would cause among Iraqi civilians. Unsurprisingly, their fears proved to be well-founded.
