Has the 4th of July lost is luster?

Yesterday, I hit the 4th of July Festivities held in downtown Henderson and watched what they called a fireworks display...wow, disappointment is an understatement

Everyone seemed to be less jovial than in 4th of Julys past. The air of happiness and festiveness just wasn't there. The fireworks were ok, but nothing spectacular.

Maybe it was because the Holiday was mid-week and most people had to be at work this morning?

or maybe, we do so much flag waving year round, that it just doesn't have the same meaning as it used to? You used to see everyone decked out in red, white and blue and having a good time...yesterday was like city of the damned...

Maybe I was just n the wrong town or attended the wrong celebration?

I wasn't even thinking about that . . . . you can get them legally. it is your own fault if the 4th isn't good enough.

Don't rely on others for your entertainment.

It wasn't just me though...there just seemed to be an overall feeling of lack of excitement all around

although my BBQ turned out amazing, hehe

Ya, I think it being on a Wednesday definetly helped the suckiness factor increase. But I always thought the best part of the 4th was hanging out with friends and family, getting drunk and being dangerously unsafe with copious amounts of fireworks. Since I moved to AZ, a big part of that is gone being that pretty much all fireworks are illegal. Mostly because dopey backcountry inbreds can't seem to not light the desert on fire when they send a couple bottlerockets in the air.

SilvercashJeanette 07-05-2007 10:48 AM

We were just talking about this last night! I really agree with you... The 4th isn't nearly the celebration it used to be. Actually, no holidays are really the same anymore... They've all lost most of their magic and fun...Maybe it is just about us getting older?

I've wondered about the getting old factor too, but it wasn't just me...I had to ask a few people just in case it was me getting older and maybe just having been spoiled by some amazing fireworks displays and celebrations in the past that this year just couldn't live up to...

eroswebmaster 07-05-2007 10:55 AM

Things have definitely changed. We headed out to 215 and Summerlin Pkwy to watch the display from Hills Park...it sucked ass.

We had a really good view of the valley and didn't see anything that looked like it might have been impressive.

Clark County this year went for more smaller displays at various parks around town, rather than the one big one at one park.

The fireworks that we can buy in Nevada the safe and sane ones once again.."sucked ass."

It doesn't matter how much you spend on those, when the most they go is 5 feet high it just doesn't have the same impact as some nice bottle rockets.

We went to the Henderson festival a few years ago, and we had a pretty good time. But I was not real impressed with the display, couldn't very well see how well it went this year being as far across town as possible.

But after we finished the fireworks last night, I would have rather spent that money on something else. It literally felt like I just burned money.

Zebra 07-05-2007 11:02 AM

I guess it depends on where you are. My family and I had a blast yesterday. We went to the movies in downtown Oklahoma City to see Transformers and then walked around checking out the displays and did some people watching while eating. Later we went to the main city park to meet up with my sister and her kids and we let the kids run free at the moon bounce and playground. It was crowded but everyone seemed to be having a good time. We ate funnel cakes, Indian tacos, ice cream, cotton candy, jumbo corndogs, homemade root beer. While we ate we listened to a good disco cover band that was dressed like athletic clowns. After the band we got lucky and found a great spot to watch the fireworks show that lasted a good 30 minutes and was really impressive. Bought the kids glow sticks and necklaces and little twirly glow things and they played with them on the way home until they fell asleep. Definitely one of the better 4th's for us in a while.

Ravage 07-05-2007 11:04 AM

Fireworks are getting pretty expensive to put on as well. I'm sure that deters from putting on a major display these days. Seems only New Years gets the biggest display of all.

Also, the 4th falling on a Wednesday doesn't help matters.

wyldworx 07-05-2007 11:06 AM

Justifying the consumption of shit on toast is one thing, but to expect that hype would disguise your shitty veiw of everything forever is comical.

Hmmm, maybe it was all about location

Glad to hear you and the family had a great time :)

Guess I don't understand this comment. People buy "safe and sane" while the other stuff is available? How come?

Peaches 07-05-2007 11:24 AM

With the drought, most of the smaller town fireworks shows were canceled. Usually there's some dumbass firing them off in my subdivision, illegally, but even they were smart enough not to try with all the dry wood around.

I used to head to ATL every year, but the hassle of getting there, finding parking, fighting the crowds on the way out, then driving home just got to be too much.

Next year I'm planning on getting a hotel room for the night down by a place I like - this year just chilled at home, BBQd, drank wine and swung in the hammock :)

The other stuff is not readily available here...they set up check points on various highways leading into town and confiscate stuff all day long.

The key to buying them on the reservation is to buy them in May or June....if you do it in July, they are looking more closely...

I had no idea . . . . luckily, I will be headed the other way when I go there next week.

pocketkangaroo 07-05-2007 05:38 PM

I think it's a lot of things. The mid-week thing means many people aren't on a long weekend where they may have traveled or met up with friends/family. There isn't a lot of build-up to the fireworks. I also think a lot of stupid laws on fireworks have made it harder to put on good shows or even buy them yourselves in many areas. A lot of the shit I used to be able to buy is illegal. Only thing I can really get in Illinois are sparklers.

J. Falcon 07-05-2007 05:59 PM

Maybe it's the ilegal war, the loss of thousands of innocent lives, the millions of dollars spent each day on killing people, living in constant fear of "terrorists", a president with a ninth grade education, and some other stuff that isnt that cool either. Could that be it?

I live in a community that is 1/2 vacation homes. VERY few people here this holiday compared to Friday/Monday holidays.

The dumpsters are packed with crap though and every moron who has an ATV has driven down my road. I hate tourists.

Of course not, keep repeating to yourself, "it's not that at all" and the bad stuff will go away just like an ugly dream.

Herb Kornfield 07-05-2007 09:02 PM

The whole thing was a depressing mess of a day here in PA..... I remember in the 80's / 90's it was a major party down day ... anymore ..its just another day.

Holidays have really gone into just days of the week anymore

TampaToker 07-05-2007 09:05 PM

Wow i said the same thing last night. I guess im just getting to old now :Oh crap

Not at all. In fact, that's what we're celebrating. :flagface

I think this year was the most impressive fireworks I ever saw. I saw it at Gasworks Park, Seattle. There were so many ppl there and the fireworks were damn impressive. They synchronized perfectly with the music and everything, was breathtaking. Guess it depends where you are, personally I think it gets better here each year.

sexykat 07-05-2007 09:49 PM

Found a vid on yotube. You will get a rough idea, but it looked 10 times better live. See how the fireworks synchronize with the music.

Not surprised to see an asshole like you pop in with anti-American drivel in a thread about July 4th celebrations.

So bashing the president and the war is bashing the entire country and its people?

Besides the thread title is "Has the 4th of July lost is luster?" so I think its not that hard to point out why.
