The Clash vs The Ramones vs The Sex Pistols

Who started punk rock?
Who was your favorite?

I LOVE the sex pistols but i have to hand it to the clash, they were great and the originals. The Ramones werent bad either

SxDx 04-26-2007 11:12 AM

all 3 were original and great in their own right. hard to say who founded punk...one could even make an argument that punk was started by the New York Dolls, MC5 and/or Iggy and the Stooges.

Just depends on how strong of an argument you want to make for each

I was going to mention the NY Dolls but i figured not enough people knew them...

fuzebox 04-26-2007 12:14 PM

In that Ramones documentary Joe Strummer said that The Clash wouldn't have been given a chance by the UK market if it hadn't been for the rising popularity of The Ramones in New York...

Shrug.

Well said :thumbsup

All these bands were breaking new ground at the same time, it would be really unfair to give one more credit than the other...

Michaelious 04-26-2007 12:17 PM

Certainly has to be the ramones

cherrylula 04-26-2007 12:20 PM

the stooges.

Fap 04-26-2007 12:27 PM

All i know i think we can all agree the Sex Pistols were the most punk rock (as in bad ass). I mean come on sid vicious didnt even know how to play bass guitar!

Joe BrainCash 04-26-2007 12:52 PM

Tough question. The Sex Pistols definately became the 'Poster Boys' of punk(especially sick Sid Viscious). The Ramones we're there at the beginning and never changed their formula (nor their clothes and haircuts).
But The Clash were much more gifted and varied musically.

The Hansons? The 3 brothers? mmmbop? Please..you know they win...

And wasn't Johnny Rotten recruited because he was wearing an "I hate Pink Floyd" shirt? :1orglaugh

I am chauncy 04-26-2007 01:53 PM

there are two great bands in this question and The Clash and The Ramones if I had to chose I chose The Clash they were a more important band to the social structure of the time their music had a message and a meaning. The Ramones their music was more fun didn't really have much substance.

The Sex Pistols however were crap they were the original boy bad a bullshit manufactured product who soul purpose was to make money buy exploiting a current trend at the time they are the backstreet boys of punk and deserve no credit or accolades

Vegas Ken 04-26-2007 01:59 PM

The Clash!!!!!!!!!!!

Angelo22 04-26-2007 02:06 PM

The clash gets my vote
hard decision, they are all amazing
but Clash gets it

Azlord 04-26-2007 02:22 PM

I just got these the other day and was really stoked. Not the originators of punk or anything, but some good records.

hey banthis,

watch this documentary... http://www.punkattitude.co.uk/

it will help you to know more about Punk Music, origin and the people around the scene.

Cheers mate!

CDSmith 04-27-2007 01:03 AM

I'll have to go with the Clash. I had no use at all for the sex pistols music. All Sid Vicious had was the name, he couldn't sing fir shit, couldn't play for shit either. He was a personality only, and to me that sort of crap only smacks of overrated hype. Sorry to you pistols fans, :D

The Ramones definitely had their moments, some decent tunes, but the Clash soar far above the others in my opinion.

Jakke PNG 04-27-2007 01:06 AM

Hanson kicks some serious butt.

I've seen a few dvds, i love em all really.
I was watching one i forget who it was but the band put cyanide in pieces of bread and threw them around so the birds would eat it.. funny stuff

Oh and before i forget my though, The Sex Pistols were the most punk rock in the sense or grungy and well blatantly "bad ass" getting booted from the UK. Not giving a shit, make $0 off their album. Getting cans thrown at them and just starting a fight not caring (sid). Too bad Nancy came into the picturee

BusterBunny 04-27-2007 01:22 AM

cant beat the clash for that raw dubbed up sound but the pistols imho started the scene rolling here in the uk

ViVe la anarchy!

Sarah_Jayne 04-27-2007 05:04 AM

Started punk..well that disqualifies the Clash but also you have to talk about which scene.

Anyway, they are three totally different groups. The Pistols took punk to the British masses and popularized an attitude and produced ONE very important album in the history of music. However, it would be hard to insane they are the 'best' of any type of group.

The Ramones were great fun and but if you are asking which is the best overall band of those three then it is The Clash because they produced the best overall songs to my ears and kept the British punk notion of politics being a part of punk and Joe kept that up until his death.

However, I still think the Buzzcocks in their prime were better than all three.

Thank you ...the New York Dolls don't get the place they deserve in musical history. Not only can they be attributed with an influence on the start of punk they also did plenty to bring glam rock around in the UK.

wyldworx 04-27-2007 05:15 AM

the sex pistols as great as they were, rocked a moment.
the clash shaped an era.
the ramones can be annoying.

LAJ 04-27-2007 06:39 AM

Ummm... there is no contest here. The Ramones shit all over the Clash and the Sex Pistols. A couple of good songs or one good album does not a great punk band make.

It's arguable that Iggy and the Stooges started punk rock in the late 60s anyway.

From a talent aspect, I would have to agree. I saw them nearly 20 years ago and still have Steve Diggle's guitar pick from that show :thumbsup

wyldworx 04-27-2007 06:44 AM

Iggy is punk.:2 cents:

I tend to say that the Buzzcocks are what happened when punk started to think it was okay to know how to play an instrument and thought harmony wasn't the devil. Even if they are Northern punk rather than London punk they still push all the right buttons for me...even if I did mutter that punk was offically dead when one of their songs was used in Shrek 2.

I have to admit that I smile to myself every time I walk past the 100 Club on Oxford Street in London. I used to catch my bus home from work home right outside of the club and even though now it is usually Salsa lessons on offer it was nice to know that the club where London punk was born is still open.

Like I said, he couldn't sing for shit.

First time I heard that back in the day I kept wishing someone would put a bullet in his head and make it stop.

Nothing has changed. :D

not-a-troll 04-27-2007 09:46 AM
