first thing you need to work on is just getting the muscle memory down. get a choordbook and start practicing going from one to the next and back again.

Tips? Sure anyone who gets a guitar and quickly starts or learns the first few bars to stairway to heaven should have their fingers snapped back to their wrists.

Nice job, man. I'm a avid guitarist and have been playing for too many years to remember.

A good first step is to learn your basic open chords:

G, A, E, D, C

Other great basic chords to know:

Em, Am

Most people pick up a guitar and learn only power chords. You'll never get good this way. Learn your open chords first and worry about power chords later. You can do way more with open chords.

Not sure what types of music you listen to, but bands like Nirvana and Green Day are great to start off with since their music is generally pretty simple.

Here's my favorite guitar tab resource:

Tip 1 learn on an acoustic first. :2 cents:

play every day even if you only have 5 mins..... I found that if I have my guitar on a stand I play it A LOT more, because I can just pick it up for a few and put it down.....

Take care...

Man, I love acoustic guitar and it's all I play on lately. But for learning... I think an electric is definitely easier.

I've got the original Gibson version of that one :)

Been playing for 14 years...

First thing you have to learn, is to tune that damn thing. Forget about those small devices. You have to do it manually.

Next thing to do is to buy some "learn to play" books or find something on the internet. That will keep you buisy for a while.

And the most important thing: That instrument is something it takes YEARS to get good at. Try to play a little everyday.

As Jimi Hendrix said:
Stick with the guitar, and you will be rewarded

Of course it was a good deal. Its a Squire! LOL.

At any rate, good luck. I was never able to stick with it.

Pumba 03-24-2007 04:09 AM

Nice that you have a new hobby. Hope you will feel all the rewards playing can give you. Remmeber, only practice will make you better. I've been playing for 12 years. There are many good books for learning guitar. Take time to learn the basics. There is a good book from Troy Stetina called "Speed Mechanics" It is basicly more advance book. But, don't be fulled by the title. It is NOT about shreding and stupidly fast parts with no sense. This book is about how you learn new things, how to make your own exercises to overcame hard parts. That is far more immportant than just to learn tom play very fast.
Don'y just learn to read tabs, learn to read notes. And offcorse, try to play some tunes by ear. It IS immportant.
Get the metronom from the very begining and always, always play in with sens for the rhythm!
Good luck with playing.

Adultnet 03-24-2007 04:35 AM
