An Important Message About American Cannibal
We were #2 in independent per screen box office gross in New york on Friday but we're still looking to make the numbers we need to expand to a national theatrical expansion. If you didn't make a film screening this past weekend, PLEASE come see the movie this week. If you can't make it, you can support the film but buying a ticket online (?) at www.cinemavillage.com. If you don't take my word for it, we're getting some good reviews- see The New York Times' "Best of New York" recommendation this week, below.
Please help the cause and spread the word. This is our last shot. Thanks! -KB |
good work KB :)

KB,
Poppy and Lisa are going to try to make it up to Orange County on Friday evening and stay with me. So long as it is playing, we will be hitting the Edwards Theater and buying tickets as a show of support. Most people don't realize that unless they buy tickets this movie will leave theaters. This holds true with all independent films. The movie is great and hopefully enough people get out to see it and prolong its theater life. Anyone in the Orange County area interested in seeing it with us, please contact me. |
We will be there in Irvine this week. I believe Cory is trying to put a group together to go an see it on Friday night.

You can even buy a ticket at Cinema Village in NYC for $10 just to help the cause and the box office gross- It's all about NYC's ticket stubs unfortunately :-(( I like that you guys will be attending in Irvine- I just hope the movie is still playing by Friday there. -KB |
I'm gonna try to see it in Chicago this weekend.

From the Small Screen to the Silver Screen
By MELENA RYZIK Monday, March 19, 2007 Erika Rand Two reality show contestants, Monique Capelta and Zachary Yurcisin. Reality shows are the new Great American Novels: everyone?s cultivating one. The filmmakers behind ?American Cannibal: The Road to Reality? have several, from a show in which male virgins are tempted by porn stars to the titular program, situated, of course, on a desert island. Even if it?s a put-on ? and David Carr is inclined to think it is ? it illustrates an essential truth about entertainment business today, says Stephen Holden: ?If you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas.? And it?s a comedy! If you?re ambitious, make it a double feature with the 1976 film that started it all, Sydney Lumet?s ?Network.? The director will be on hand afterward to discuss whether you should still be mad as hell, or just, you know, take it. ?American Cannibal,? now playing at Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street (Fifth Avenue), (212) 924-3363. ?Network,? 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.) at the Academy Theater, 111 East 59th Street (Park Avenue), (888) 778-7575; $5. Reservations recommended. |
Big grats, KB. How are your reviews?

People don't realize that by supporting movies like this, we can rid the world of movies like Little Miss Sunshine. On a serious note, my friend is an independent filmmaker and I used to work in theater troups for comedy. I always attend his shorts; and he jumped at the opportunity to attend KB's. It is all about word of mouth and getting people to show support, much like you and Sleazy just did. :thumbsup |

A big THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ARE HELPING SPREAD THE LOVE ABOUT THIS MOVIE!!
I love and thank you all from the bottom of my heart! Below please find the review of ?American Cannibal? that is posted on Filmjournal.com AMERICAN CANNIBAL LIFESIZE ENTERTAINMENT/Color/1.66/Dolby Digital/91 Mins./Not Rated Featuring: Gil S. Ripley, Dave Roberts, Kevin Blatt, Neil DeGroot, B.J. Sigesmund, Ben Silverman, Linda Stasi, Lizz Winstead. Credits: Written and directed by Perry Grebin, Michael Nigro. Produced by Grebin, Nigro, Denis Jensen. Executive producers: Ed Litwak, Corey Ribotsky, Mike Riley, Kenneth D. Yellin, Lloyd Groveman. Cinematography: Grebin, Ari Haberberg. Edited by Suki Hawley. Supervising editor: Doug Abel. Music by Doug Gillard. A Pacificap Entertainment Holdings presentation of an Acme Pictures production, in association with LaSalleHolland. Hilarious faux documentary explores the lunatic edge of reality TV. Can it be? A reality show that actually lures producers and viewers with the possibility of cannibalism among the competing, island-bound contestants? That?s what the totally, uh, delicious documentary American Cannibal allegedly captures?the creation and attempted execution of such a series that may actually appeal to certain ?tastes? among hungry TV writer wannabes, bottom-shelf TV producers and their, uh, thrill-starved target viewers. But like a warning label on edibles of the supermarket kind, American Cannibal, which premiered at last year?s Tribeca Film Festival, comes with the disclaimer that it may be as fraudulent as it is hilarious. But let?s focus on the latter, as the former is best relegated to the eyes (and smarts) of beholders. And why spoil so much fun with even a suggestion of spoilers? So here we have, if we agree on the rules, a documentary that reveals to what venal, vile extent reality-show creators and producers will go for their day in the sun and on the Sony. Filmmakers Perry Grebin and Michael Nigro give us up close and pitching Dave Roberts and Gil S. Ripley, two desperate, tireless, out-of-work TV writers eager for tube glory. While this latter duo have more noble concepts on their minds, it is their offhanded remark about a cannibalism angle to sleazy promoter Kevin Blatt, who made a killing marketing the Paris Hilton sex tape, that gets the ball and cameras rolling. Blatt, you see, wants to step up to reality TV from porn. Barely a step up, as this doc has it. As American Cannibal suggests, making it in TV is about getting the dough and Blatt, delighted by prospects for a show ?where survival is just the beginning,? is in with the moolah. Grebin and Nigro know a thing or two about narrative structure and show storytelling chops. They begin American Cannibal with location footage of the eponymous reality show that reveals the serious injury of a female contestant. The incident is so severe it may actually shut down the shoot. What follows is the flashback to the behind-the-scenes journey of boy geniuses Roberts and Ripley as they take meetings with William Morris types and penetrate actual TV production offices like that of IFC to pitch less noxious projects, all in vain. Their idea for ?Virgin Territory,? a reality show featuring real virgins, is unconsummated, even with the catchy ?When you win it, you lose it!? tagline. Producers aren?t seduced but at least one gives hope. ?You have the passion,? she assures the duo in the Esperanto of biz lingo. Adding credibility and much amusement throughout are the many real-life media types who weigh in on the phenomenon of reality TV and other hot topics. Roberts and Ripley are perfect as the eager-beaver desperados and Blatt, a big fan of strippers, money and attention, is or plays the perfect greasy villain. He sums up his business philosophy by declaring, ?You?re either a pimp or a ?ho.? American Cannibal is a genuine cinematic hoot, while also providing insight into the ways of American mass entertainment. The filmmakers deliver a clever, funny, convincing, slick package which also includes location shooting from coast to coast and the shores of Puerto Rico. With luck, word of mouth and positive media reception will give the doc the life on the big screen it deserves before going home sweet home. ?Doris Toumarkine |
BTW, the official box office results came out and we were #5 in independent per screen box office average, but that's out of over 50 independents, including Babel and Little Miss Sunshine...
So we are almost there- some more word of mouth can give me some more shelf life before it goes to DVD...which by the way will have a lot more press surrounding that! BTW my Dr. Phil epsiode is on one week from TODAY people. That should help me as well thanks again to all of you who bought tix and and to those who are going to be buying tix. |

Sorry I missed the showing the other week man...haven't been able to make it south in a while.
Is this available for purchase on DVD yet? Oh and ditto to what A1R3K mentioned about youtube, google video & myspace -- definitely worth firing off some viral promos in those spots... :pimp |
