Living in the Philippines

Where is the place to be in the Philippines? And what are the prices for renting a decent house or appartment?

That's kind of what I meant...

Since you are on a Webmaster board, what site(s) do you operate/work for?

you can get a decent house for just $200 a month. Makati, Pasig would be appropriate for you. But if you want to live somewhere peaceful, and close to nature, Cebu would be the place for you

BlueWire 02-20-2007 01:19 AM

For the easiest transition I would personally suggest Makati around the greenbelt area

themonk 02-20-2007 01:33 AM

heh not a lot i think

jscott 02-20-2007 01:34 AM

are you looking for a pimped out place? or a shithole to stack some savings?

goldmine 02-20-2007 01:39 AM

A friend of mine, told me before that he loves living in the PI. "If" you have money. I dunno if you are a Caucasian etc but think twice before moving in PI. Reasons:

1. When you're a Caucasian or any other foreign race, your taxi fare always get doubled LoL, funny but true... most of the time taxi will not use their meters when you ride the cab and just give you expensive price.

2. Going out of town - will double or triple your cost coz the "most" (im not saying all) natives see you as walking $$$$$

3. Security: foreigners are "more likely" to be mugged and robbed in public areas especially bars and discos. Dont night party alone... it's prudent to always have a Filipino guide or chaperone. (true, i once saw a 60 yr old white man dying in a hospital due to multiple stab wounds)

And here's the nice part

1. Most chicks are hot!
2. Almost everybody speaks English
3. All street signs, or everything you see on the streets are written in english
4. Nice Beaches and bitches are usually in the same location ;)
5. Everything is cheap as long as you know how to bargain

:)

I enjoyed my 6 months in Angeles City ... even with ALL the associated "challenges".

It os the wild west in many respects though... suited me to a "t".

madamadadane 02-20-2007 02:40 AM

MsWild 02-20-2007 02:54 AM

Makati is a nice place :)

MarktheMarker 02-20-2007 03:26 AM

I suggest you try out the following areas:

Fort Bonifacio/Global City
Makati
Ortigas Center

Depending on how "large" you want to live, $1.5K to $3K a month should give you a nice lifestyle. If you live LARGE then you'll definitely need more than $3K a month.

Anyway, MABUHAY and I wish ya the best! Enjoy your stay!

Danny B 02-20-2007 03:49 AM

Makati green belt area for sure :thumbsup

MarktheMarker 02-20-2007 06:04 AM

3k$ is a lot of money for the philippines, isn't it?

pornguy 02-20-2007 10:10 AM

Before you move some place. Pack a big bag, and spend 3 to 6 months visiting. I think there are a few people in the board from there, that can help you get set up.

Remember that not all areas have highspeed connections, and computers become more expensive to repair, and or buy.

loverboy 02-20-2007 10:18 AM

there are more than a thousand reason to live in the Philippines

It is....

But you could also blow it pretty fast if you live large. You can easily eat out every meal for only a 3-4 dollars a plate in the city or less outside of teh city; go to bars that are 50 cent beers, live outside of downtown in the business districts etc...

But if you're someone who goes out a lot, likes to be in the "be seen" clubs, goes to girl bars, things are cheap so maybe you decide to take people out, living is cheaper so you decide to go for a nicer condo than you would get in USA....etc. etc....

Before you know it you could be spending more than you do in the USA.

Bottom line is; you CAN live very cheap....or you can live like a high roller for a fraction of what it would cost you in USA. But don't go down there expecting to live a celebrity lifestyle for 3k/mo.

If you go down there...are able to keep your focus on work and not going out, have some fun on the weekends, and dont be a dumbass....Then you'll be fine on a modest paycheck by USA standards :thumbsup

lol .. don't listen to anyone telling you to live near burgos, that scene would get old fast to any decent person :) and its nothing but 1bdrm apartelles without internet.

in makati - for decent price, hit up the newer buildings around Pasong Tamo, live large, hit up Salcedo Village. thats for condos.

houses in makati, best place to live is either Urdeneta or Bel-Air due to the central proximity.

want to get a little cheaper and more neighborhood like are, head out to Ortigas.

beach-oriented areas, definately cebu as any other developed beach area is prone to storms and more power outages.

and yah, if you have cash to blow on condos that are posh, the Fort Bonofacio area and Rockwell are the best.

shoeaholicanon 03-02-2007 08:18 AM

I feel very well here in Cebu City. Only the internet connection is shit.
I lived before on a small island with nice beaches but also fucking boring there. It was not my place.

NickB. 04-30-2010 12:43 AM

lol @ 3k USD a month , that means taxi rides non-stop + dont go out for dinner/lunch breakfast & dont expect a nice 2-3bedroom condo... let alone turn on your aircon

Sid70 04-30-2010 06:44 AM

Just curious, why would American want to change living place to the 3rd world location? Are you a loser that can not afford making happy an American woman and got no nuts to marry one?

Like the guy said, it depends on your lifestyle. $3k is pretty decent to live off in a country like the Phillipines.
