Automatic or Manual?

Okay so this is a funny story.

A few months ago I would have answered automatic.

I ordered a new BMW from my friends car wholsale business because I saved a ton on the price. I filled out the online quote form on BMW's website with all my options (sport package, sport wheels, bluetooth, navigation, all the toys. I completely overlooked the 6 speed manual transmission and assumed it was automatic.

I am a guy who learned on auto and NEVER drove a stick. I stalled every time I even tried to drive a friends stick shift in the parking lot.

So they deliver the car to my house and I look inside to see a 6 speed manual shift. I waited a long time for this customn ordered car and I would have felt like shit asking them to take it back even though I couldn't drive a stick, to be honest I was intimidated by it.

I thought: "What better car than a BMW to learn manual?"

Now (4 months later) I am a converted manual guy. From now on every car I have to drive will be a stick shift. This sounds silly but I feel like I am one with my car like never before.

Which do you prefer?

I recently started loving the electronic shifting.

Fluid 11-02-2006 11:32 AM

manual...I don't feel in total control of an automatic really

Babaganoosh 11-02-2006 11:35 AM

Automatic all the way for me. I don't want to feel like one with my car. It's transportation to me, nothing more.

Vitasoy 11-02-2006 11:36 AM

Manual... my first car purchase was a manual, even though I never droven one. Took a while getting the hang out of it.. (especailly on step hills and being scared of rolling back) keep stalling heh.

Yeah, exactly how I feel. I'm not drag racing or out to impress anyone. I want my car to just go when I want it go and that's it.

I have enough to do without having to be using extra arms and legs to do something that should just be done on it's own.

mike217 11-02-2006 11:38 AM

Any Sports car should most definitely have a manual transmission. It takes away from the car if you get an automatic. Breaks my heart when I see an automatic porsche or ferrari.

Sosa 11-02-2006 11:39 AM

I haven't drove a stick around in a while but prefer automatics.

Project-Shadow 11-02-2006 11:40 AM

The majority of the cars over here are manual. I prefer manual although when i'm tired i'd kill for an automatic.. maybe its time to get one of those tiptronic gearboxs.

I'm a lazy driver so automatic for me. I hit a ton of traffic going to and from the office so I would hate to be constantly shifting gears in bumper to bumper hell

2477 11-02-2006 12:17 PM

If it's a fun car, like a 330, I'd go w/ the standard. But if you learned how to drive standard, from scratch, on it....you probably shaved a few years off it's transmissions life

smack 11-02-2006 12:20 PM

manual. always. i won't even drive an auto anymore. they scare me, and always make me feel like i am hurtling out of control.

plus you can't beat the fun and precision of a manual for racing.

schneemann 11-02-2006 12:25 PM

BMW sticks are so easy, you really shouldn't reference them for their "experience" as a manual transmission.

Make your decision after using a manual Corvette in Seattle, LA, or DC during rush hour.

corvette 11-02-2006 12:32 PM

depends on the car, of course

if you have a grocery getter, you probably want automatic

if you have a performance sports car, you need a 6-speed

bdld 11-02-2006 12:37 PM

automatic, i dont want to do any extra work while driving.

ravo 11-02-2006 12:37 PM

Manual all the way. Both our daily drivers (F-150 & Mini Cooper S) are sticks.

bdld 11-02-2006 12:37 PM

its hard enough trying to eat or talk on the phone while driving

tehHinjew 11-02-2006 12:39 PM

nice thanks for the link

marko13 11-02-2006 12:42 PM

i am more manual guy ... i like it more that way....

woj 11-02-2006 12:43 PM

Hmmm NO Jag's . I drive both manual and auto, depending on the wehicle as to what it needs.I have a J gate shifter in the XKR and I can put it in sport mode and go tru the gears if I want. Which I do from time to time, when I feel the need for speed:thumbsup

E$_manager 11-02-2006 01:36 PM

Automatic for me still. It is a mounty region here and it is difficult to change transmissions when you are in mountains.

The Captain 11-02-2006 01:39 PM

automatic for sure, I have a stick now and there is _NOTHING_ worse then sitting in traffic with a manual car, clutch in first gear clutch out over and over again and its all kinds of balls NEVER AGAIN will i be suckered into buying a stick

ImLost 11-02-2006 01:45 PM

i never drived stick, so auto

MaDalton 11-02-2006 01:55 PM

i got 2 cars (summer/winter) - one with stick and the other one with automatic. the automatic car i usually drive in manual shifting mode (porsche tiptronic). i don't really care much - just in traffic jams automatic cars are way more comfortable

baddog 11-02-2006 01:57 PM

5 speed auto here, but I like manuals better, just wasn't available

dm3 11-02-2006 02:00 PM

i preffered automatic :)

Klen 11-02-2006 02:02 PM

Automatic is better for lazy people.

E$_manager 11-02-2006 02:06 PM

I think all women will prefer automatic. It is easier for them.:)

soukee 11-02-2006 02:10 PM

Manual for sure. Automatic is for my mother:-)

Jman 11-02-2006 02:55 PM

Be one with the beemer Brad, the force is strong in you ;-)

MandyBlake 11-02-2006 03:16 PM

i've never ridden a city bus and i can't drive a manual so my vote is for automatic. :)
