Fitness Gurus - Help me pick an ab machine

Hmm, I got this flabby stomach and I've lost about 14lbs last month and still going strong this month (You can see some pics of my flabbiness at http://www.awmhealth.com/category/fallenmuffin/ ). Anywho I need to get the stomach under control now that I'm doing cycling and other things to manage my weight.

So what do you suggest? I searched a couple websites and found these products...

Best ab machine I have used, and I have tried most of em, costs no more than $20:

cheekycherry 10-06-2006 02:12 AM

My trainer says machines are shit.

godisdead 10-06-2006 07:50 AM

Forget the machines. Do some crunches and keep doing the cardio. The main problem is the fat around your abs anyway. The crunches are sufficient for building some muscle.

so true..

engorgecash 10-06-2006 07:55 AM

Retards.

Spot weight loss is a myth. Doing a thousand crunches won't spot reduce fat around your midsection.

Nothing but cardio and a calorie defecit diet will reduce fat around your abdominals.

JD 10-06-2006 08:03 AM

engorgecash: very true. But a strong core (abs) will increase the number of calories you burn just by sitting around thus potentially create a small defecit.
Combine that with a diet of maintanance - 10-20% and the weight will drop like a mofo

fallenmuffin: read my post about the exercise balls man. I've got a shitload more exercises for you on the ball if you want them and they're guaranteed to make you feel the burn.

Yeah, I read it.. but uh, those balls are deadly. Nothing makes you feel bad like falling off a big pink plastic ball and busting your ass lol. So i was hoping I could get around it. I've been doing ALOT of cardio.. bike/walking/mowing/ect anything I can do. Diet is going well I've just replaced alot of items and eat alot less lol.

I was hoping one of those benches would be recommended or maybe one of those scam plastic 'super ab' machines might work lol guess not. I've been doing crunches the last couple days but I really don't think thats working out.

Raf1 10-06-2006 08:23 AM

the only thing that's worth buying for home use (in my opinion) is an "ab roller" or whatever it's called in the US. Most gyms also have them.

... Just about anything is acceptable as long as it involves a movement that gets your heart rate into your Target Heart Rate Zone ....

God damn it fallenmuffin, eat another donut. Screw fitness! Lord Archiot will reward you in the afterlife with a new shiny robotic body so fuck this one.

Bryan G 10-06-2006 08:32 AM

Don't need an ad machine. Watch what you eat and run alot. Do basic ad exercises.

Dragar 10-06-2006 08:34 AM

do some heel toe shuffle and some stomache crunches then it doesn't cost anything for some silly gimmick

Just buy "the wheel" ! Great tool. Cheap to

sleeves 10-06-2006 10:28 AM

A swiss ball and a medicine ball.

L0stMind 10-06-2006 10:33 AM

swiss ball, medicine ball... nothing more then this is needed. Want to increase core stability? Just swap your office chair for the swiss ball.

No machines on that list actually do anything...

lol yeah falling off one does fucking suck but it's pretty hard to do imho. I've been drenched in sweat and not fallen off one. The only time I fell off was when I was goofing off and not paying attention.

what's funny is that I'm actually eating about 3 times as much as I was and I'm losing weight. It's not about eating less to lose weight it's about what you eat and how often.

s9ann0 10-06-2006 10:47 AM

I just got a ball for sitting on and its good for doing sit-ups etc on so I would say just get one of them

but when you exercise your abs it doesn't make fat come off your stomach you know that right you need to lose the fat then people can see your muscle tone / abs whatever

paterson3713 10-06-2006 10:50 AM

As stated earlier, doing ab exercises will not reduce the size of your stomach. In fact it will probably make you look more bloated because it'll increase the size of your abs, which are in turn covered by fat.

Sure, building muscle raises the amount of calories you burn by sitting around. But I think you're wasting your time if that is your plan. There are way better exercises to do if you want to build a bunch of muscle to help you lose the fat. For example, compond lifts like squats and deadlifts are great for building muscle.

If your main goal is to just get fit and toned then I would continue with the cardio you are doing and also add weight lifting. For the $150 you want to spend you should be able to by a few dumbbells so you can lift at home. Do cardio a few times a week and weight lifting some other days. Do big compound lifts to build the most muscle.

An ab machine will not help you one bit. If you buy some dumbbells you can simply hold a dumbbell to your chest and use that for a weighted crunch which will give you an extra burn.

Just remember that diet is like 80% of weight loss. Cut out the junk foot, and eat small meals 6 times per day to rev up your metabolism. Taper the carbs from more in the morning to less at night. And don't eat 3 hours before bed. Drink 1-2 gallons of water per day.

Great post! In tune with what I've been training. My resting metabolic rate has went up perhaps 20% ever since I started lifting and strenghening up. Added 10lbs of lean mass.

Oh and just a bit more about spot reducing fat. Every person puts fat on at different parts of their body first. It depends on your genes. Eveyone loses weight on different parts first as well. Unforetunately for most people they gain weight on their stomach first, and then lose it last. Which makes it difficult to get that nice stomach because you must first get rid of all the other fat around your body before your stomach will shrink. Obviously this is put simply, but you get the idea.

paterson3713: You made some really good points. I have been eating less (smaller portions) and usually 3-4 tiny meals a day. I also have two 15lbs dumbbells that I do some stuff with. And of course the exericese bike that i use a lot. So looks like i'm on the right path but I guess I should loose another 20lbs before bothering with ab muscles.

SPeRMiNaToR: Alright, lol.... Next time I'm at the store i'll pick up one of those damn balls. Arg.. I hate those things lol.
