Programmers: how much would it cost to do this?
 

I'm thinking about a system that will display all the users who are logged into a website and each user has a profile with their pictures.
And the users can send private messages to eachother. And ignore other members, have a buddy list, search other members based on their responses in their profiles. stuff like that.

This is like those messageboards that displays "who is online" but instead of just the member name it will display the entire member profile with a sample pic of the member. And then you can click the members name see more pics of this person and send them a private message...just like you can with a messageboard.

So I guess I just need someone to take a messageboard and hack it up so it displays differently.

I have no idea how much php programming rates are so I dont know if this is a $500 job or a 10k job.

Any idea of a rough estimate?

I can do it for 35K I'll need it all paypaled to me in advance.

This script is definetly not a 500 dollar script and will run you into the thousands

Actually breaking down a forum script would be more work then just writing it from scratch. All you need is a script in php or perl to read for a cookie if the cookie doesnt exist you make a login page if it does then you just send them on their way You can offer the surfer a chance to register or enter as a guest. then you just use a simple ssi tag to call a script the script then check for the cookie if not there then logs them as a guest with a 5 minute timeout (no page hist in 5 minutes means they left) then the script writes a small table to the page that has the number of registered and the number of guest. I would say about 5-10 hours programming depending on the speed of the programmerand 25-50 per hour depending on the quality of the programmer. Depends If you break down a script like phorum It will be a lot easier than coding a board by yourself in my opinion

note: this isn't just a "forum" there's a lot more to it. furthermore don't over-generalize any job, since all jobs have unique requirements that you need to examine before giving any sort of quote. :)

Well I gave him an example of a site ... which I thing is mostly what he wants and gave him a quote based on that, is definetly not a forum.

However on the other hand you can just create a simple hack for vb, since hacks exist for users to have pictures next to their names just create a hack to edit people online to contain images.

this isn't a "hack" or based off of a "board" it's actually not even related to a board. it has some board-like functions but the core of it is nothing like a message board. trust me. :)

Hire a programmer to modify IKONBOARD. Ikonboard already has all the elements you're asking for--it just needs to be modified. IKONBOARD is FREE. I recommend Midnight--he is one of the best developers I've worked with.
