How many of you mofos are into MARTIAL ARTS? If so what school?
Its never too late. I started Tae Kwon Do not long ago and I love it ! My kid got me in to it and I tell you what ! it’s the best work out you’ll ever have.. and you will learn how to kick some ass outside of the internet!
|
I eat chinese food, that's good enough for me
|
tae kwon do in the US is pathetic. its not "martial arts" - its jumping around like a poorly trained gymnast on crack, trying to do impractical shit because it looks impressive, while some dork who got his black belt in 6 months of training tells you that you will be catching bullets with your teeth in no time.
although good and bad trainers do exist in any style, martial arts in the US is mostly bullshit and tae kwon do is by far the worst offender in my opinion. |
i have a black belt in Go Ju Ryu btw... but i am more partial to shotokan. haven't trained in many years.
|
I did Muy Thai (Thai Boxing) and Kick Boxing for 4 years and Jujitsu for 1 year before I popped a hernia in my abdomen and decided jujitsu was no longer an option. I will go back to kickboxing eventually when I stop smoking completely. Down to a pack or two a week :helpme

like i said.. there is good and bad everywhere. in the US, Tae Kwon Do ranks right up there with the worst of the worst.. because the fact is, as a business, traditional martial arts just doesn't sell. I learned this the hard way from owning my own school. The sad fact is that Fantasy sells. "Easy" sells. "I want my black belt in 6 month" sells. "I want to work for it and master something at any cost and any hardship, no matter how long it takes or how much it hurts" doesn't sell at all, except to a few hardcore people. tae kwon do more than any i have seen.... sell the fantasy (with the chinese styles right behind) and the primary appeal of Tae Kwon Do is how fast you can get your black belt. everyone is in love with what they study. thats a big mistake. there is a japanese word for it.. but i forgot it and i'm too lazy to look... but if the last 10 years has shown us anything with all the UFC, MMA fighting.. its that NO particular martial art is enough to be a superior fighter. Since you brought up Chuck Norris... i trained with Bill Reuter for many years, who beat Chuck Norris in Japan in what i believe was the last tournament he fought in. :) -- tried to google it... hahaha... Chuck Norris gets much more attention than he deserves. |

I’ll get point on the street just by braking some niqqaz jaw because he asked me to pay for his gas, just like it happened to me 10 years ago when I was in college driving through ghetto. And speaking of UFC and Pride???? .. Who owns it now??? Sambo.. Fedor and his so boring style. Please tell me your teacher is better than him!! |
Nigga.. 6 month??? Shit my brother has been doing it for 5 years and still red belt.

I did Kempo from 8 years old until 24 years old. I got my 3rd degree black belt, and was an assistant instructor for a couple of schools.
I switched gears and did Tang Soo Do from 24 to 27. |

Shotokan for 11years and then Kyokushin for 4 years
|
I once attended a Tae Kwon Do school when I was still 15. I just quit after 4 months after I got a fractured arm from a basketball game.

jeez...so many of us:) why did you finished it? I started it when I was 9, and I couldn't stop since then:) |
Done many types over the years... stuck with Hwarang Mu Sul Hak Gyo the longest to get my Black... about 8 years.
Tried out Kyokushinkai an Shotokan Karate here but they were how you describe TKD in the states. Promoting 6 month black belts, points tournaments without full contact and wearing protective gear, nothing below the waist etc... truly pathetic. |
I'm taking up Modern arnis. Although we use sticks for practice. That's the same martial arts you seen on Tomb Raider 2 movie. You can basically apply the principles using a knife, barefist, or any hard object you can get your hands on.
|
I was go to mushasi karate some time.
|
Studied shitu ryu itosu kai for many years.
|
I'm trained in dong dong foo
|
I am a ninja
|
Shorin Ryu and Goshen Ryu here, did them on and off for many years. Also tried MMA style grappling and it was just too gay for me, rolling around with guys heads in my crotch or vis versa just weirded me out. Martial Arts in the US is mostly a joke, especially Tae Kwon Do and their points style tournements.
Go Full Contact or Go Home!!!!!! |
TAE.....KWON......DO!!!!!!
(I trained "wtf" and not the boring, karate-like "itf") |
My gym offers Karate.. I've been tempted to try it but wouldn't wanna piss off the pros by wasting the coache's time looking after my new dumb self...
So I'm thinking of beefing up first, then I won't look so stupid when I start.. |
Was in Kuk Sool Wan for six years when I was a kid. Great way to keep ADD in check without the ritalin.
|
Is street fighting a martial art? :upsidedow
|
I'm rather surprised the thread hasn't been drowned in the "BJJ is king, your standing up martial arts wouldn't stand a chance in a real fight" guys.

Coming off a back injury from last year, and I miss not making it to training. It's great you love TKD, as an excercise, but I'd think otherwise for self defense. Just some quick questions about TKD. How many times during class do you spar? Do you spar against a fully resisting opponent? |
I took Taekwondo when I was in the 3rd grade and now kickboxing

I started up BJJ in 2003, and haven't looked back since. |

and have you ever been to Japan or China to learn something there for a while?
because this summer we had a training camp (gashuku) here in Hungary and some okinawan senseis came here to teach us for 7 days. And I can tell you, these guys are not kidding! even the warm-up was more sweaty than some very hard trainings I had during this 16 years of practicing! Sometimes it was a bit boring because they don't know how to teach, but I admire and respect them very much! |
Anyone have a suggestion as to what a good style of martial arts would be to focus on the mind. I want to really concentrate on having better control over my anxiety and stress levels from work.

Nothing like pure exertion to calm the mind. :) |
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Gracie Barra Costa Rica under Sydney Machado.
Judo, private classes with a 67 year old Japanese Judo Master who just finished 2nd in the Worlds this year but has won it many times previous. |
That is an interesting point.
Any resources to get a good overview of the different styles? You know of any good teachers or schools in the Boston area for a specific style. I am open to anything and would chose based on the skill of the teacher in one style over another. |

Boston is like the Mecca of North East US MMA! http://massmma.net/schools.php |
Anthony,
Shows how much I know :) Thanks for the link. I will check in to it over the weekend and post more questions I am sure :thumbsup |
No martial arts training is going to help you in this sceanario.
Build up your common sense, so that you never get in this situation. https://youtube.com/v/pKdZgeesw68 |
