Do you go to the gym?

I have a friend who wants me to start going with her so I called and the gym told me it was only $66 for registration fee and then $99 for a year for 2 years. Does that sound right or are they going to hit me with more hidden fees? I just thought that price was kinda cheap.

I mean it's $264 for 2 years? I just don't know if I should join or not.

:)

sickkittens 09-06-2006 07:52 AM

If you have the money, hire a personal trainer. That's what everyone tells me at least.

TurboAngel 09-06-2006 07:57 AM

They claim they have them there to help you so you don't have to hire one. I don't know how true it is.

:(

cranki 09-06-2006 08:00 AM

I workout at home... no need to spend money on stuff you can do yourself ;)

BT 09-06-2006 08:02 AM

Get gym membership is the only way to travel

notabook 09-06-2006 08:18 AM

I have a shitty little self-created gym that a few friends of mine and I use, that way I could actually justify spending the money on it (I knew I wouldn't be using it 1/10 of the amount necessary to justify the cost). If I were you I’d try to get a personal trainer, that way you’re pretty much guaranteed to stick to a routine. If you are fairly self motivated, going to the gym would probably be enough, but if you’re a slacker then you really need a personal trainer.

galleryseek 09-06-2006 08:26 AM

TurboAngel, that's actually a cheaper gym so I'd say go for it if they have a good variety of equipment.

Also, I'd like to take this oppurtunity to spam my newly launched online fitness training service. :) www.fitpractical.com

DaddyHalbucks 09-06-2006 08:29 AM

I pay $50 a month, and the gym is nothing fancy.

Yours sounds like a good deal.

madawgz 09-06-2006 08:29 AM

sure go for it, it shouldnt be too expensive, or just hire a personal trainer...

OG LennyT 09-06-2006 08:35 AM

Even with a personal trainer you need a gym to work out in.....right?

generally, yeah. unless you're going to go a very simplistic route and you're focusing on weight loss through diet and cardiovascular workouts (you can do cardio workouts anywhere, without equipment. running is a good example)

of course it's always a positive to have access to all that equipment, as resistance training can significantly "aid" in the process of losing fat.. through building muscle, you're raising your metabolism which = more fat burned. :)

although it's not an absolute necessity to lose fat.

but if your primary goal is building muscle, having access to a gym is a must unless you have a lot of freeweights in your home.

Sosa 09-06-2006 08:48 AM

I got this nice leather couch and recliner I workout in :)

Ace_luffy 09-06-2006 08:51 AM

i have my own mini-gym sets... no time to go out..............

If you pick up a trainer from a gym, the membership will be included in the price of the trainer.

UniversalPass Pete 09-06-2006 08:52 AM

Yep! keeps me alive!:pimp

carol.prime 09-06-2006 09:03 AM

I don't pay for memberships coz I really don't go to the gym regularly. My sched at work is too consuming. I only go to the gym once a week for 5-hours of kickboxing

macmark 09-06-2006 09:05 AM

I have Tae Bo DVDs, feel like a bit of a prick watching it but they do they job ;-)

Ecchi22 09-06-2006 09:05 AM

Yeah, I go to the gym every day, I pay $20/month.

Sounds cheap.

I got sick of paying $500au a year for my membership.

Bought a home gym for a shade over a k, and an exercise bike for another k. Still going strong a year later. Good to have your own TV and channel selection to work out in front of, cardio goes by without even noticing it.

shake 09-06-2006 09:10 AM

The recumbent bikes are great for watching tv :)

IWantU_Jeff 09-06-2006 09:19 AM

Is it a Y type of gym or a straight out gym? Seems kinda low 99$ for the year. Also usually the personal trainer will help set you up at first & then later if you want to book time they charge (had been my exp.)

I love the dude part.

But for real man, that is a seriously cheap price.

Personally I have a fairly large gym setup at the house...but going to the gym has it's advantages from a 'getting in your space to workout' mode.

A home gym is like a home office, sometimes boundaries blur and it's easy to let them stay blurry.

MaLayLaH 09-06-2006 09:40 AM

I pay $25 a month. The beefy guys who hit on you when you're there makes it all worth it. :winkwink:

I don't know what the prices are like down there but that's dirt cheap for here.

Antonio 09-06-2006 10:53 AM

I pay about $40 per month for the best gym in town, and trust me it makes a difference, once you have a membership you're actulally motivated to go (lotsa chicks, you feel good after the excersise etc)

you can build your own gym at home but you'll be using dar less ofte (at least this is how I feel)

are you a dip shit?

people who want access to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment go to a gym.. like myself. because training with a shitty BLOWFLEX is inferior to the equipment at a gym.

people who want serious results, go to a gym.

and what he meant, since you obviously have no comprehension skills, is that when you have a HOME GYM it's easy to treat it like just another room in your home, and not use it consistently, and not use it for what it's for. when you commit yourself to a gym membership, it lights a fire under your ass to get in there and use what you paid for.

i always recommend a gym over purchasing home equipment.

26MLR 09-06-2006 12:13 PM

That's dirt cheep. I paid $150 to join and $50. a month.
