Laser eye surgery?
 

Anyone get the procedure done? I'm farsighted and I was told that LASIK would be the 'best' option. I'm worried about the side effects, dry eyes, halos, loss of a line of vision (optometric term for the last line you can see on an eye chart) and some other issues.:1orglaugh

In some rare instances, LASIK surgery has been known to turn you into a midget.

I had it done over a year ago... changed my life. I would highly recommend!!

I'm now 20/15 in one eye and 20/20 with the other. My vision is better than 20/20!!

were you farsighted or near sighted?

had it done 2 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. No complications, no halos, no blurred vision. still seeing 20/20 2 years later

My ex-wife had it done. Worked great. Its much better now than in the early years of laser surgery. A friend I had who had it done when it first came out had one eye fine and the other had star effects at night that would drive him crazy.

There's supposed to be a new technique now where they don't even cut the cornea flap.

I know ppl who liked it, and are very happy. I also know one girl who is blind on one eye now...Also another guy who had to reurn like 3-4 times...

blind in one eye, that's horrible....seems 5% have complications, at this point seems like an unneccessary risk to take

Same feeling here...And I don't mind the contacts(I have new ones daily) also I 'only' have minus 1.00 and minus 1.50

I did and do have issues since my surgery.and did have to cancel my trip to South Africa. Now before I start?I went to a top doctor, one of the developers of it so it had nothing per say to do with him.

The surgery itself got complicated as my eye were too small for the machine, so they had to cut slits which heal on their own. On top of that I was soar for quite sometime due to the amount of pain killer injections that had to be given (apparently I have a high tolerance to pain killers..lol)

Now the surgery did go very well, speaking form a technical standpoint, however my left eye was "over corrected" too much and my right eye is still healing. What this means is my right eye is about 20/20 and my left eye I am not sure of the measurement but it is blurry?just out of focus where it screws me up. I also get headaches due to the strain on the right eye at times.

As Far as the halo effect... I do have it. I see the glow of street lights and traffic lights etc (like the "aura" surrounding them.)I also have hemorrhaging still.

The prognosis is 50/50 that the left eye will have to be touched up by another surgery and hopefully the halos etc will diminish. If I go back for another ?zap? it will be in a month or two to ensure the eye is healed and stable.

So the bottom line is do I regret it?
No I do not... The procedure was done right, I was a candidate and the doctor is top notch! Some things just do not always go as planned.

Now Update 8/31/2006:
Now about 2 months ago I went and had the eye that had some issues re-corrected. Atthis point all in all do not know if it was worth it to be honest...

I know several people who have had it and it work great.

But, I also personally know someone (elderly) who had the surgery done and within several months had a serious decline in vision - ending up legally blind in both eyes.

After experiencing this first hand, I'm not taking any chances. If you chose to, I would suggest doing one eye at a time with a year in between.

What was your prescription before the surgery? Has the re-treatment now helped the other eye or is it still worse than before the surgery (with glasses or contacts)?

I had it done about 5 years ago my eyes are still 20/15 now and befor I had it done I was 20/300 in my eyes I couldnt read a watch without glasses


It doesnt hurt, its a simple 10 minute proceedure and its safe..

I have yet to actually meet anyone that said it wasnt a good thing for them

some get it done and it doesnt give them perfect vision but its much better then before they had it

I am reading about people having a halo effect.

I do have that at night however I must say that I had that before I had the surgery too.

I also had a stigmatism and they were able to correct that as well.

i'm also worried that the final result will not be as good as my vision currently is with glasses on

I'm planning on waiting until there is less than 1% chance of a problem, and I think if there is even a 1 in a million chance of going blind (or near-blind) I won't do it. :Oh crap

I had it done when I was 30 and I see like a hawk now. I was a prime candidate. You need to go to a surgeon that specializes just in this procedure. I gladly paid 5k and it was worth every penny. Do not go to one of those renegade weekend warriors that is charging 500 per eye and is using a friends laser. You get what you pay for in this world and do not hustle your eyes. Pay for a top surgeon!

I got it done 6 years ago (PRK). I was mildly short sighted.

First few moths I had halos. First 3 years I had dry eyes, but vision was great.
6 years on my eyes have settled and are still 20/20, but they were much better before. They dont do PRK anymore and I understand that the Lastik version is very good.
I'd still do it all again though if my eyes got bad. Hopefully they wont change anymore now.

How are your eyes now? You said you had it re-fixed...But is ot 100% ok now?

I just had it done last week...Everything is great except the only problem is i'm seeing some big ass glares at night, especially around the lights...gawd damm those glares are huge, that is the only thing I don't like about the surgery. To anyone who has got lasik... do you experience the same problem, is it normal to see big glares and halo around the lights?

know 3 ppl who've done it with success.....

Got it done, with the new tech, feel great now after a week :)

I did it 6 months ago and had no side effect. I will be needing glasses for reading in the future though.

nearsighted... astigmatism. They had to use a special laser to correct it. (Not one you can find in one of those shopping mall storefront places!)

Get the liquid tears specifically for lasik... stay away from the eyedrops like Visine and Clear Eyes.

It'll clear up shortly. You may get one eye blurry every once in a while as well, and that will also clear up.

i would never trust a laser going into my eye :|
