Why is "being old" an insult here?

I've seen people make comments about people's age a lot on here. I guess I'm wondering why? I mean I can see making fun of someone for being fat, stupid, etc. But being older than someone is simply life. In x amount of years, the guy making fun of the old guy is going to be that age as well.

It is a timeless debate...

maybe because the average age here is 25 and most of those think that after 35 or 40 they are gonna be retired?

just a guess, never thought about it much

because old people are useless

Rui 08-18-2006 01:03 PM

its a bit obvious and you know the answer...

Its common for people to make money and retire and enjoy life without working, its sad to see "older people" still pretending to be young and working to "go somewhere" or keep them busy...

Thats one of the best descriptions to FAILURE imho...

"for being fat"...full of wisdom eh :error

L-Pink 08-18-2006 01:04 PM

Quite true, expecially when anyone can die in the next 10 minutes.

25? Hell I'll be 38 in December. We used the Apple II in computer class in high school. When I was my son's age( he's 11 now ) the Atari 2600 was the system everyone wanted for X-mas.

Well I meant it's an insult on someone for something they can atleast control or are different than the other person. I'm not condoning it, just saying I think it's funny when people make fun of someone for what they will inevitably become.

Some of the most powerful businessmen in the world are over 50. I don't think it means failure at all.

Personally, no matter how much money I make in my life, I don't think I can ever stop working. I enjoy creating things.

scottybuzz 08-18-2006 01:28 PM

some old people just cant stand doing nothing rich or poor

I see nothing wrong with being old and insults about it are not funny because they have made it there. and the insulter may not make it to that age.

scottybuzz 08-18-2006 01:29 PM

as a young gun on the board, I like old people because they have something called life experience.

You really are a dumb fuck. You don't think that some of us enjoy what we do?

I have retired before. This is a lot more fun, and I get paid for it.

What makes me more sad is the 40+ year olds who act like they are 8 on GFY.

When I was a "young gun" :winkwink: used to make a point of employing older people even for relatively easy jobs - they are definately more stable, sensible and a generally good attitude - and often loyal friends.

Anything involving "management" was always a matter of being 40+ with a track record - even employed our bank manager who was 50 at the time - great asset in any biz.

Young folks with qualifications - ie degrees, programming languages, legal qualifications, technical ability, management training blah also have something to offer.

When retirement age comes along - I sure ain't retiring from anything :) There's too much to do yet and actually like the adult biz, - not necessarily because it is the adult biz, but it offers a very wide range of options (not just net stuff), but from manufacturing, bricks and mortar to media blah. If I ever did have nothing to do - I'd prob be helping some other biz in adult get some project off the floor - not for money, just for the pleasure of seeing it work.

it's common for people to make money and retire and enjoy life? the vast majority of the world's richest self made men keep working - retirement is generally for the working drones who spend 35 years working for somebody else.

what do your parents do? are they failures?

I'm old, and I'm okay with being old.

Considering the fact that I actively embraced the cocaine 80's, I feel damned lucky to be old. :)

Spunky 08-18-2006 09:09 PM

If 45 is considered old,so be it..I wish I had the Internet when I was growing up

Trust me, there was a time that the Vegas odds-makers never thought I would make it past 25.

In fact, when I divorced my first wife I took an insurance policy out on her as I was sure she would never last a year, but it's true, only the good die young.

You guys are stuck with me a while.

Vite 08-18-2006 09:27 PM

why not live and just think about it when your old?

Jace 08-18-2006 09:49 PM

this board is full of people that think everything on this board matters, when in reality nothing on this board matters

It's actually quite funny..
People who have never been old.. know nothing about being old.. yet
make fun of, ridicule.. whatever.. people that are old..

So they're doing nothing more than advertising their ignorance by
attempting to comment on something that they know absolutely nothing about..

These are people with low self esteem and the only way they can feel superior (in their own mind) is to criticize others...

mikeyddddd 08-18-2006 10:15 PM

I never thought I would make it to 18. Once I hit 21, I figured everything after that was gravy. That was quite awhile and a lot of gravy ago.

But, as much as I like playing golf and skiing, I also like buying & developing domains and programming. I do what I want when I want and that ain't bad.
