Type twice as fast with this keyboard

So I travelled for a bit the past few weeks and a guy told me that he uses a DVORAK keyboard. I asked "WTF is that?!" He explained that its MUCH better then the regular QWERTY keyboard and why... so I googled it when I got home and found more good shit bout it.

What do you guys think, would you change keyboards to be able to type faster?

XxXotic 07-12-2006 12:07 PM

type faster? you'd have to learn to type all over again how would that be faster?

it's a more logical layout. re-learning to type would suck ass but if you want to type faster in the long run, DVORAK is the way to go

sharp 07-12-2006 12:13 PM

no way! I'm not learning how to type all over again. I think it would be impossiblel.

To learn to type alover again you first have to know to type from the get go...just having fun.

Error in your post.

This should of been a spam post with refferal link included, targeted at the sigwhores and quick post count wanabees. "Double your posting speed, get in 50% more sig views per day, all for only 29.95". You would of made mad bank.

True they would be stuck having to learn to retype but they would have ordered it before they relized it, since we all know they rarely read anything more than a line or two anyways.

You sir lost mad bank.

That keyboard looks like someone's idea of a sick joke.

butterflybucks 07-12-2006 02:17 PM

Shit, I can barely type as it is! The only keyboard I need is called a SECRETARY

MetaMan 07-12-2006 02:19 PM

how would it make u type faster? your fingers only move so fast. whos to say who uses what finger better then others? or how people type? i would never switch, i type with 2 index finers, i do not use any other fingers.

CaptainWolfy 07-12-2006 03:01 PM

no way !

Manowar 07-12-2006 03:02 PM

nah i wouldnt change now

Elli 07-12-2006 03:30 PM

All the vowels under the left hand? Q at least is in a logical spot.

Methinks it's missing a few keys.

And no, I'm not going to relearn my keyboard. I've been touchtyping since highschool. I'm not going back.

Scott McD 07-12-2006 03:33 PM

Fuck that. I can imagine the amount of typing errors you'd make in the first few weeks.

I'll stick with what i have now...

I'm a sig whore 07-12-2006 03:38 PM

kinda looks like a pain to me.

You made me curious..

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak-toetsenbord

So QWERTY was used for old typing machines, where you had to press the buttons very HARD, while this system was designer for the keyboards we use now(dvorak was created in 1930 tho)

Hmm, will be a bitch to learn typing again tho :S

justsexxx 07-12-2006 03:44 PM

Actually, on old typewriters, each letter was attached to an arm that would raise up and strike the paper. If you typed fast and hit two letters close to each other, the arms would usually get tangled and you'd have to manually untangle them.

QWERTY was designed to seperate letters that were often typed together so as to reduce the frequency of the arms getting tangled. And, it was also designed to consistantly switch the "action" from one hand to another in order to speed up typing and reduce the activity of each hand.

Dvorak did his layout in the mid-30s after the advent of electric typewriters which didn't have arms for the keys.

(I had to take lots of typing classes in high school).

abadfish 07-12-2006 04:03 PM

That keyboard scares me. I would not be interested because I've never heard of it. I'd be lost whenever I used someone elses computer or if I had a laptop with a traditional layout.

I don't use home row as it is now but I know where all of the keys are and I can type fairly quickly.

Ambidextrous 07-12-2006 04:22 PM

nahh...another waste of time. go QWERTY! :thumbsup

BigasMoe 07-12-2006 04:27 PM

I'm having a hard enough time learning to speak and understand a new language, learning a new keyboard would only slow the process>>>

Quagmire 07-12-2006 04:37 PM

who needs to type faster in a point and click world? Windoze baby, yeah!

E$_manager 07-12-2006 04:54 PM

i think even if it is more easy to type - it will bw hard to relearn.

ProducerCashDave 07-12-2006 04:57 PM

This right here is the best keyboard of all

munki 07-12-2006 04:59 PM

I tried it with an old keyboard, I can see the logic of the system... Took about an hour to get the basics down

Now, can I keep that system, and QWERTY locked away... hmmmm....

reynold 07-12-2006 06:44 PM

A bit more confusing to me...

teksonline 07-12-2006 06:49 PM

try to spell the word puffy on that keyboard, would take you an hour.. its garbage don't let that patent holder fool you... Dvorak sucks

Mr. Romance 07-12-2006 06:52 PM

hummm..
