Huh those numbers are the same as the ones cited in my original thread. Just because they closed the numbers to the general public in recent years does not negate the fact that EUROPES CRIME RATES ARE HIGHER THAN THE USA.

Those stats do not include violent crimes, or if they do they are definitely lying out of their ass. Let?s get into murder a bit shall we? All the following data can be pulled from nationmaster, and all data is at least from the year 2k and up.

Washington, DC has one of the highest murder rates in the developed world at around 50 per 100,000, which is more than a HUNDRED TIMES that of the capital of the European Union, Brussels. The highest rate I could find for a comparably large city in Europe was Moscow, and it is only 15 per 100k! Largest Canadian city?s homicide rate I could find was Regina?s, which was at 4.72. They don?t kill people at all in Canada :(

The top 10 countries on total murders per year:

On that same list France?s murders per year were at 1,051, Germany?s at 960, and the UK?s was at 850.

Breaking it down per population capita, we have the following:
USA: Around 4.2802 per million are murdered.
Germany: Around 1.16461 per million are murdered.
France: Around 1.73272 per million are murdered.
UK: Around 1.40633 per million are murdered.

So there you have it. You are about 4x more likely to get murdered in the USA than you are in Germany, France, or the UK. I could do the above for each of these countries on other violent crimes such as rape and other violent crimes but I can assure you the USA would win again out of these four choices ^_^ USA, USA! Take what appears to be the worst stat - the UK - basically that says almost 10% of the population have committed some crime - and, to top that, this is supposed to be an annual stat???

No country in the western world (and slim chance of elsewhere) has a crime stat near 10%.

You'd need to do some research on this over countries Splum.. but just asked a law person who knows of one country well and that is miles out from what is known by law enforcement in that country - they'd have a severe jail accomodation problem if that was the case :winkwink:

Other bits apparently are.. some areas count each "offense", others count multiple instances of the same offense multiple times and there are also regional variations on the recording of crime. Some nations don't include offenses committed by "minors", others do etc. There are also geo differences in reporting of crime - ie some folks regard stuff as petty and don't bother reporting it. It really needs a good bit of work to extract comparable international stats.

The US stats alone really need qualifying and come from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report and the National Crime Victimization Survey (Bureau of Justice Stats).

One thing that is known is that South Africa has a crime rate above almost all other countries.
