Years ago, I read a quote from Larry Flynt that said something like, "When pornography is everywhere, no one will care about it anymore."

I just read a few reviews of the LA Erotica Convention last week and they weren't positive. Seems the consensus is product is selling way too cheap and agencies are offering talent at firesale prices.

70% of the internet connected households now have broadband and porno is easier and cheaper to get than ever because of it. Take a look at My-Space or x-Peeps and you'll find all the entertainment you want to get yourself off for nothing!

The US Attorney General doesn't have to worry about fighting pornography. We'll snuff it out ourselves. Sooner or later, it'll be everwhere (if it isn't already) no one will care, and nobody's gonna make any money.

Long live the Religious Right. They'll keep us in business.

The work is getting harder, but it's not over yet.

I think a lot of people will fall off over the next 2 years in both the online and DVD markets.

The people who can shoot & deliver good content will always have a job.

The industry is definitly self-destructing but there is still enough money to be made to retire 50 times in this lifetime.

Decades ago there was a "mystique" about the adult biz - that gradually deminished and seriously doubt it even exists now (perhaps with some naive folks).

Familiarly breeds boredom - or as regards the adult net biz that translates into less conversions.

The flip side is other continents continue to open up plus fresh heads are coming online daily from existing markets.

So.. hell knows what that means.. :winkwink:

I believe a lot of the problem with this industry becoming too flooded brings me to a point that Halcyon made during Cybernet this year. He mentioned that the barriers of entry into our industry are far too low - I'm a little too tired to go into that at the moment, but let me chug a few bulls and i'll get back to it.

Got a feeling the actual "usefulness" of that is very low. Basically means masses of "almost webmasters" are earning peanuts on average and signing up for 50 sponsor programs and clogging them up.

This is evidenced by any sponsor's stats - eg.. where maybe 5% do anything at a commercial level and the remaining 95% chug along or come and go every six months. (Tho.. having said that - that customer pattern is much the same as any biz :winkwink:)

Again.. other areas of the adult biz require a lot more capital as startup and a fair degree of business accumen - just like any other biz.

Only my :2 cents: (and not just because of recent events) - there will be considerable more controls in place, whether we like it or not. Some of these.. from whatever angle they hit - could, in effect, raise that "entry level" and force adjustment of some business models. Who knows? :winkwink:

And.. guessing again.... suspect there will be changes in "cash registers" (transaction processors), and some actual progress in the area of micro payments in particular - plus a more secure background for any client (webmaster) funds held by any processor. The days of "we promise we'll send you a check" have almost gone already.

Personally, there's still a lot of opportunity.

There are a lot of emerging markets (as someone pointed out) that can still be profitable. I agree that most of the western market is already saturated, but there's still a way to make money.

Localization is one. Producing "local" talent and marketing it to their home town is always a good thing. It makes the content seem accessible in a psychological sense. This is why amateur content has grown leaps and bounds.

With that in mind, there are still a ton of places that the US adult market hasn't penetrated. Asian countries are gradually becoming lenient towards pornography, and those are not small markets by any means.

Crack China right, and it's cash cash cash again. It'll also open up cross-selling content (Chinese content to the west and vice versa), which would give everyone a far greater market once again.

C'mon guys. You disappoint me. Too many cynics does not make an industry profit. :)

The truth of the matter is that sex sells, no matter if your pushing porn or trying to sell cars. Open up any woman's mag these days; Their photo content is very close to porn.

The entry barrier to getting into this industry is very low; Anyone can do it. Hell, I started with zero investment and free hosting on Geocities. New programs are opening up every day, some better than others, and only the strong will make it in the long run. I've already seen too many people open up their own program and fail in a horrible way.

What's going to happen in this industry is the same as any other emerging industry - It will be led by a hand full of people who will make great money for a long time, and then the large fish will swallow up the little fish. You see this already with Playboy buying up ICS and Jenna; I also know of two VERY large and VERY mainstream companies who are about to enter into the porn market (one in August and one in January).

Anyone knows who profits the most from porn? If I told you it was General Motors you'd all think I'm on crack. But it's true.

Some of the changes will probably be much for the better and markets will continue to open. The EU now appears to have more eyes on screens than North America and this will keep increasing - tho "local markets" there may be harder to attack than all-English speaking world. Again... eastbound, despite regional laws/restrictions will open up as well.

One of more interesting areas for expansion is in Spanish language users with a claimed increase of 229% in the last five years and plenty leeway for further increases.

Only my :2 cents: but have to agree with you on localized markets - even if only simply served up by geo locator systems. This not only applies to adult, but also mainstream. ie.. you want to purchase a camera and know all competitive stores around where you live in Lyon in France? No biggie.

Can also see a *lot* more happening with live action (also interaction generally) - whether the term is "cams" or something else.

Familiarity with the product may bring on some cynicism - but we ain't dead yet :winkwink:

All I will say is that TV is everywhere. For anyone with an antenna it is free eventhough most people have and pay for cable. Yet with all this free TV millions still pay for premium cable like HBO. DVD sales are at an all time high and people still go to the movies? But why they can get entertainment free right there at home?

The answer is simple, if you have something that everyone else doesn't or something that is better than the other stuff, people will pay for it. There is a ton of porn out there and I assume, baring any huge law changes, the amount will continue to rise. If you want success you have to think outside the box. Everyone out there is giving away a shitty show for free, you have to offer them The Sopranos and they will pay for it.

Porn is a multi billion dollar industry. It may change, but it is not going away. That is the ability to make a buck with it is not going away.

My worry is that it may be difficult for the little guy like me to grow and make the big cash. I also see a number of new programs failing.

DWB got it right. If you can present the surfer with something unique, hot and different they can't find elsewhere, they are gonna fucking buy. Exclusive, unique and high quality content will keep on selling, as long as you know how to market it.

It certainly isn't as cheap and easy to make money nowadays, but if you have some brains and can adapt with the times you can still make a million bucks. :)

Also I hear every few years how people forcast that there will be a lot of companies and people that go out of business in the next couple of years. This is not the case. There are more sponswers today then there were 2 years ago. Many of them may not make big money, but it seems like about once a month there is an announcement of a new sponser opening up. These new sponsers, for the most part, rely on affiliates. I know they generate their own sales and they make deals with other paysite owners, but if you took all the affiliates away from the sponsers most of them would dissappear. There will always be opportunity for those that are willing to try new things and can adapt to the changing landscape.
