things I've learned so far in costa rica..

1. Tica's (Costa Rican women) can be very aggressive...if they like you, you'll know it =p

2. You don't need to speak the local language to pick up a girl....body language rules!

3. You can either live very cheaply or at just below normal US prices.

4. Tico's wield cars like weapons.

5. Most non-tica's have zero interest in non-tico men...so if you wanna come down here to pick up European and American women, you're outta luck for the most part.

6. You can go out all night, buy your friends multiple rounds of drinks and walk out spending less than $30.

7. It's cheaper to buy a beer, than a Diet Coke.

8. You can take a weekend trip to the Caribbean for under $80.

9. There are NO street addresses. My current address is one block east of the BurgerKing and one block north of the corner store.

10. Cable internet is going to cost me almost a third of what I pay for rent.....but rent is around $275 for a 2 bedroom.

HushMoney 06-21-2006 02:47 PM

Nice!!!!!!!!

puravida 06-21-2006 02:49 PM

most of this is sooooo true. #10 ... rentwise ... that varies based on where u live. if you're paying $275 for a 2bedroom, ur renting a normal tico place.. just as i do. aren't those escazu/santa ana rental prices freakin insane ??

and as for #5, i've picked up canadian, european, australian, and american women here. it's no different than back home in the states

crockett 06-21-2006 02:50 PM

How fast is the cable internet there and what part of CR do you live in? btw do you have any places to find the cheap rentals? Everywhere I looked online was kinda pricey and more like prices here in the US.

Cyndalie 06-21-2006 02:50 PM

I had a good time when I went down there to work a few days with our gaming/casino development team back in 98/99. I had no idea they celebrated Halloween outside of the US! Spent the whole time in San Jose tho, didn't get to see much of the countryside. I know a little bit of spanish but mostly spoke english with a psude spanish accent sounding like a moron. LOL don't ask why haha

triumph 06-21-2006 02:51 PM

sounds like a great place to live for a few years and enjoy life.

Mr. Romance 06-21-2006 02:53 PM

good things...I am here in Uruguay and some of the items are similar...

true, I just want a high end tico place....... as for the women, well, I haven't run across many non-tica's, it's just what I hear :)

SportsBook 06-21-2006 02:54 PM

1. Tica's (Costa Rican women) can be very aggressive...if they like you, you'll know it =p

Yes - 100% true

2. You don't need to speak the local language to pick up a girl....body language rules!

Yes - 100% true - same as in any country almost

3. You can either live very cheaply or at just below normal US prices.

Depends where you live - in central San Jose or outside smaller cities yes - in Escazu or Santa Ana - no

4. Tico's wield cars like weapons.

Defensive driving

5. Most non-tica's have zero interest in non-tico men...so if you wanna come down here to pick up European and American women, you're outta luck for the most part.

No idea - no experience here

6. You can go out all night, buy your friends multiple rounds of drinks and walk out spending less than $30.

Yes - 100% true

7. It's cheaper to buy a beer, than a Diet Coke.

Yes - 100% true

8. You can take a weekend trip to the Caribbean for under $80.

Not sure - haven't tried this - if you take the bus I can believe it - driving and the cost of gas - probably a hard figure to match.

9. There are NO street addresses. My current address is one block east of the BurgerKing and one block north of the corner store.

Yes - 100% true - I'm 500 meters from Tony Romas and McDonalds :1orglaugh

10. Cable internet is going to cost me almost a third of what I pay for rent.....but rent is around $275 for a 2 bedroom.

Again depends where you live - in Escazu rent is $1K ++ for a fully furnished executive rental with leather couches, plasma TV, etc.

I'm getting 2Mbit cable, which I think is the standard unless you really wanna pay high for it.

I'm lucky in that I have a friend looking for me. I've heard that having a local connection is the best way to find nice cheap places. You can try the Tico Times, but there aren't many listings.

Some people have no interest in living in "Little America", if the choices were to live in Escazu or stay in Canada, I would have stayed.

"300 meters west of the old tree..." That's the tree which was cut down in the 1950's but still remains a reference point for addresses. :1orglaugh

I can't be far from ya SportsBook - around 1000 meters from Tony Roma's :pimp

Its not really 'Little America' - yes a few more 'American' eating places - other than that, its just a bit more clean and safe.

My buddy just moved into a place that is 100m from where a department store used to be, but was since replaced with something new a couple years ago, yet no one knows what this new thing is.

puravida 06-21-2006 03:30 PM

personally, i've lived in escazu, san pedro, tres rios, and heredia. and so far, heredia is my favorite.

i pay $70 a month for 2mb down/256 up. thats about the standard. there's cheaper and more expensive pricing plans.

del rey is, i dunno, 20ish minutes away i guess, depends on traffic.

and if ur looking for places to rent, stay away from the online sites, unless you want to pay the over-inflated gringo prices. read the classifieds in la nacion

Mmmm... don't know the name Riverside, but looks like a building I've seen around here.

Shit.. I been here for years and still don't know where I stay. :1orglaugh

From Romas on the road down into Escazu - I'm off any right turning and around 1000-1500 meters west. There is a name for the place - can't remember - it never really mattered much :winkwink:

Give it 50 years and the department store will be a landmark - just before it gets replaced by a condo complex :1orglaugh

WarChild 06-21-2006 03:32 PM

Here's some for you

- How do you know when a Tico's lying to you? Their mouth is moving.
- If two Ticos are talking quietly, one of them is trying to screw the other out of something
- When Ticos look lost in thought, double check your possesions and avoid speaking with them after.
- Never, ever, ever lend a Tico money.

Save you a lot of hassle to know those rules.

Chango's used to have awesome Tomato Soup too.

It was originally owned by two guys, I think they were brothers. One bought the other out and it was never the same.
