People uncomfortable with their online handle.

saw this posted somewhere and thought it was kinda interesting.
do you feel odd using your "handle" when meeting people face to face?

I'm quite comfortable with it but I do remember feeling a little funny about it in the very begining. Now, its basically who I am in the business.
Much like McDonald's is the God of fast food, 12clicks is the...........well, you get the idea.:1orglaugh

Jakke PNG 06-13-2006 06:21 AM

Yeah. Mine sucks so much balls it's not even funny. I'm even uncomfortable using it online, but unfortunately I have a few years of brading on it, so I don't wanna change it anymore.

MikeVega 06-13-2006 06:43 AM

It dawned on me early that i would have to live with my Nick for some time and i changed it from Mvega325 ... to MikeVega .. it would suck to have to say "I'm Mvega325 ... how are you?"

I think branding is the main thing. I actually like my name because it's fitting. But like Mike I had mine changed a while back. On the flip side, I was trying to find "Three Piece Chicken Dinner" a few weeks ago. That would be an interesting convention floor introduction.

I think it would be even more embarrasing if you introduced yourself as your nick, and the person doesn't know or remember your nick. So then you would be standing there, meeting someone face-to-face for the first time and looking like an ass. Then the other party would either have to pretend and go along with it or call you on it. Now THAT would suck. :2 cents:

I could stand to lose 50lbs or so.

ne0 06-13-2006 07:57 AM

90% of the people i know call me "neo", and it wasnt from the movie, it all started on EFnet (irc network), i was trying to find a cool nick, and there was this Final Fantasy Boss (game i was playing) named Neo Ex-Death, but they cant handle large nicks, so i put ne0 (with the zero). that was like 10 years ago, or something. now i can't get rid of it, pretty annoying sometimes.

SilentKnight 06-13-2006 08:03 AM

Most people I know IRL (from the web) just call me SK.

I've used 'SilentKnight' since 1984 (as a CB radio handle in Toronto) - long before the web ever existed. Its a longtime brand.

buddyjuf 06-13-2006 08:04 AM

many of my real life friends call me "bdjuf"

sweetcuties 06-13-2006 08:11 AM

I like my name, suits me

Wizzo 06-13-2006 08:12 AM

I'm comfortable with being called Wizzo or Jimmy, just don't like when it causes confusion, like someone says "have you seen Jimmy" and that person only knows me as Wizzo and says no, when they just saw me, as a example.

ridikuloz 06-13-2006 08:23 AM

yes it has happened before, but I don't mind.

oh no! I absolutely love when this happens! I can't tell you how many times I'll be standing with someone I know when someone I don't know wants to sell me something or something and I go, "I'm a small time guy just getting started. can you help me?"
that usually makes them wrap up quickly or make the person I'm with bust out laughing. either way, its good.

slapass 06-13-2006 08:43 AM

A few years ago i ran around Vancouver with Aaronm and some others yelling "slapass! over here." a few times. I do not do a lot of shows but this is one thing i should change.

Minte 06-13-2006 08:46 AM

Minte has been my nickname since I was a kid. Most of my friends still call me by that name.

Anal Hobbit 06-13-2006 08:50 AM

My name tends to get some attention.. Playing black jack with you years ago, and having you say "good one Anal Hobbit" got some strange looks from the dealer and other players at the table.

But its all good.

I go by cadillacking on a couple of other sites & most of my friends & family call me cadillac man, so I personally do not find it odd.

if that was the reasoning behind my nick I would be a little annoyed to....there comes an age where gaming and irc should become a "spare time" kind of thing, and your business branding shouldn't be based on it

just my 0.02

World Expert Internet Service 06-13-2006 05:24 PM

madawgz 06-13-2006 05:37 PM

i love using my nick in public :)

WiredGuy 06-13-2006 05:40 PM

I don't like it in person, typically it results in endless sales pitches.
