Helmet or no helmet anyone with the potential to set himself up for life by dedicating a few years to sports is an idiot.

What might be a minor arm or leg injury could cost millions to someone at his level.

Is that confirmed yet? They keep referring to the fact that he prefers not to wear a helmet.

Big Ben was one of the most outspoken people when the KWII motorcycle accident happened last year, kind of bragging about how he would never wear a helmet. I hope this will help him learn why helmets are important.

If he had on a helmet, there wouldn't have been much in the way of head injuries. At least that would be the case with a full face helmet, which I doubt he wears even when he does wear a helmet.

The ESPN break said that he wasn't wearing one.

No he wasn't wearing a helmet, from what my grandpa says, a lady turned in front of him and his head hit her windsheild and then hit the ground, no word on how bad he is though...

The Pittsburgh TV station I am watching online has eyewitness people interviews stating that he was not wearing a helmet, and there was a lot of blood @ the scene.

Doc from hospital just said he was in "serious, but stable" condition and has just gone into surgery.

NOTHING about a broken neck, so I don't know what that post was about.

I hope he is well first then I'll start bashing him for not wearing a helmet.

People are saying he may never play again.

He was concious and alert on way to hospital...Seems like a good guy, hope he is ok.

"Serious" injuries are seldom if ever prevented by a helmet. The brain hitting the inside of the skull is the problem. A helmets purpose is to absorb energy, delaying or reducing sudden deceleration.

The fact is at speed it doesn't really make a difference. You're fucked either way. Whiplash being a major factor in this type of brain damage isn't helped by helmet use either.

Avoiding the accident in the first place is the real issue. Helmets reduce your side vision, reduce your hearing, ... ALL situational awareness levels drop when wearing a helmet.

Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

not sure why anyone with his profile would risk losing everything with behavior like this. just doesn't make sense unless he insured his ass at lloyd's of london for an obscene amount of money.

Three months before I was born my father was hit by a little old man and sent flying 150 feet down the highway. He landed on his face and had he not had a helmet and full leathers, I'd have grown up fatherless.

They might not save you each and every time, but without one...you don't even have a chance.

If he never plays football again, it will be because of his busted knees, which a helmet would have done no good to protect...
