adbrite hijacking surfer's browsers + charging credit card 56 times

What a crazy experience....

Had been using adbrite on a site for a little while, put their ads up and then decided to see how things went.

To my amazment , I had an inbox filled with hundreds of emails, complaints from surfers and members about their browsers going to hollywood poker site and when they would press the back button to go back to my site, they would be forced back to this hollywood poker site.

I had one of my guys who handles sponsors on that site contact them about this and they claim to not know why it has been doing that and that it is even doing it or did it.

Anyhow, the ads were removed promptly and now all is back to normal.

Yesterday I get a call from one of my cc companies... They tell me that they are canceling my card because of a company that has performed 56 attempts to take all different amounts off the card, many small dollar amounts and several over 100.00 (even though I have canceled all advertizing that I used to buy from adbrite, they continue to charge the card, 56 times in the span of about a week or 2, I have not even bought ads from adbrite over the past 2 months now, why all of a sudden these charges.

All I know is I have informed the authorities of this fraud onto my cc and I leave it in their hands.

As for the browser hijacking, I thought that kind of thing was very risky for a reputable company to engage in, what are your opinions on it, perhaps someone else had a negative experience with this company?

WWC 04-26-2006 12:37 AM

wow...how do people think they can get away with that kind of stuff...?

Trax 04-26-2006 12:40 AM

ive seen the browser hijacking myself. I think I will drop them

lazycash 04-26-2006 12:41 AM

Was it your surfers clicking on a particular advertiser on your site and they were the ones doing the hijacking?

no , it is something in their code (adbrite ad code) that just takes over IE and Firefox sends it to another site that adbrite chooses, the surfer has to click nothing, it is pure browser hijacking.

I wonder if I can sue?

Maybe class action suit?

How many other people are they doing this too?

darksoul 04-26-2006 01:20 AM

adbrite sucks ass.
they charge you when you setup a campaign and if the campaign is not approved you don't get your money back and you can't use it for other campaigns either.
sigh

I'm sorry, but I can't just trust an accusation like this just because you say so. Who the hell are you? Without proof this is just bullshit hearsay. You can't go blaming a program like adbrite for something like this without some sort of proof.

Dagwolf 04-26-2006 01:26 AM

Aw, sheeit. I've been recommending them to people and using them on my blog... I hope it's just a rogue advertiser and not Adbrite itself.

I hope you aren't talking about "Intermission" ads which can be disabled and must be enabled by you. :2 cents:

MP do you still have a live sample of this or have they 'disabled' it?

Also, is it just sending to Poker or is it because that's what you're promoting on that page? If it's an adult sponsor, are they hijacking and redirecting to another sponsor?

If you can hit me up - I'd like more info on this please. Thanks

JenUncut 04-26-2006 07:45 AM

When looking to purchase traffic today, I came accrossa dbrite and was considering buying some traffic. Has anyone else had a bad experience with them. And, if you have had good, can you post that as well?

Thanks In Advance!

Jen

mother fuckers

Xenophage 04-26-2006 09:04 AM

remember folks this could be someone hijacking all adbright ads and redirecting with spyware, not everything is as it seems ont eh internet these days lots of huge Spyware networks are redirecting all kinds of traffic based on the urls in the pages and they look for big ad networks and large sites to target.
