3k posts, time for another JAPAN Pictures thread (PICS)

Some of you might have seen my first Japan thread, Dec 2004

I went back to Japan in July 2005 and made a second thread.

After the 2nd trip, I decided to move to Okinawa, where I've been living since Sep 05.

So here's another Japan pics post, but this time mostly about okinawa. In my first japan thread I posted my observations about Japan - I'll do the same now, but it'll mostly be about Okinawa. I am no expert on Japan, I simply say what I see and what the locals tell me.

Here's the first pic, a view from Naha, where I live, from a plane:

How long did it take you to be able to speak fluently? I've been here almost 8 months, but I don't practice enough. My soon to be wife speaks to me mostly in Japanese, but I speak to her mostly in English... I'm looking for a private teacher though.

Okinawa is really nice, it's a lot more laidback than the Tokyo area, and most importantly, we have the beaches:

Man, I miss Japan too. My Father was from Mito City in the Ibaraki area. I have been there many times for business and pleasure (yeah baby!) but not recently.

It is so clean over there and the people are great.

I hope to be able to live there for a year or two with my family in the future.

everyone this is my buddy Dany who moved with me to Japan but now lives in Manila. He's on the beach pic

So tell us Dany, how's the 3rd world compared to Okinawa? ;)

r34lg33k 04-20-2006 03:42 AM

Simple! Take away the over pricing and the japanese respect from okinawa and cram in pollution and a completely different culture LOL.

Nicky 04-20-2006 03:43 AM

congrats on yar 3k man :pimp

Elly Vaine 04-20-2006 04:07 AM

If i count the time ,was 2 years. And to speak was 6 months to start to speak fluently, after one month u start to learn and remember words. But most important thing is to talk in japanise very often, almost always during your stay.:D
It works for everybody.

I've had many people ask me how expensive it is to live in Japan. Here are a few differences between tokyo and its surroundings and Okinawa

Prices in Okinawa are actually very cheap compared to tokyo

- you can eat in many good restaurants for about $25 / person. In tokyo, good luck if you want to eat good for less than $60 / person. Food that blows your mind is around $40-60 / person here, an incredible bargain.

- there are many izakaya (japanese style pub) where you get beer for less than $1 (draft beer buck, bigger than a bottle), but in tokyo when a bar advertises the first 3 drinks for $5 each you feel it's a bargain

- there are a few karaoke places where it's $9 for 2hours, with unlimited drinks. We tested it, drank as much as we could in 2 hours, and they never refused to serve us more drinks. Around tokyo (Chiba), it seems that normal prices for 2 hours with unlimited drinks is closer to $30-40

- We have the 100mbits internet (fiber to home) in Okinawa too, but only in tokyo was I ever able to actually download at 9-10 MB / sec. Here I mostly do under 2MB/second (FYI a 100mbits connection costs less than $40 per month, and is unlimited. I have a web server here pushing a steady 3-5mbits)

- Naha (capital of Okinawa) is as cramped as other cities around tokyo. 8000 people per square kilometer... This really makes me wonder why the hell they didn't use more of the land available around okinawa. There are tons of free land, yet when there's a city, it's so packed that there's no grass or trees. Might have something to do with the American bases everywhere

The only thing that seems to be as expensive as the mainland is land itself. I've seen a few $500k - million dollar houses on LEASED land. They pay monthly rental fees to the land owner.

I hear ya. I can have basic conversations with people, my friends can see my nihongo got a lot better since I moved here, but I'm not happy at all cause there are still thousands of words I don't know. Japanese is easy to learn, what's hard is memorizing a 3rd set of words (french is my 1st language). Anyways i'll get there, I just gotta get out more hehe

It's true that they're usually shy. It's very cute, but sometimes very annoying :)

With Cigarettes going for $2/pack, I find that most people I meet are smokers in Japan - but I saw statistics saying only 30% of Japanese smoke, compared to 21% for Canada and 22% for the US (yet they outlive the rest of the world, and okinawa is the place with the most people over 100years old in the world)

What part of okinawa are you in...I was stationed there for a while....

Jay_StandAhead 04-20-2006 06:46 AM

It's always amazing to see people lined up in front of magazine stands in convenience stores and book stores, reading sometimes for 30+ minutes. They never get told to buy it or fuck off
