The only way to be sure that no data can be recovered from the hdd by anyone ever is to replace the hdd with a new one. No matter what anyone tells you or any programs out there claim if the government wants to see what was on the hdd they will find a way

and what does it do?

use a hammer, a magnet and a flame for the hard drive.

Swap the harddrive for a new one or low level format it 35 times like in the old days :glugglug

Take out the harddrive.
Apply a sledgehammer firmly on top of the harddrive, several times. Toss away.

serious dude... if you need to destroy that data, you need to fuck that thing up beyond all recognition.... I mean, so much that you would never know it used to BE a hard drive.... anything less and they will find a way to get that data out of it.

So I guess no one's concerned with finding the missing girls...

besides, if you want to format and not be able to recover it, you'll have to format, then create a huge file which will take up all the space, and format again. that way, IMO, recovery will not be possible.

take it to a shop and have them melt the fucker with a torch.

Heard of companies getting data from harddrives that got scratched, burnt etc.. so get rid of it completly if you want to be sure.

I'm just a lurker here and a newbie but I'm a repair tech in my day job. The only safe way is to remove and replace the hard drive. Compaq will have all of the drivers for his system on their site for download after you re-install the os.

So should i just leave it?

It was my old computer, and he even told me when he went to ticketmaster.com my credit card info was even still there.

Obviously my email is still in there on outlookm and my personal info is in there.

If physically destroying the whole machine isn't an option then this is what I'd do.

Format C: (if you don't know how, click start, shut down, and select restart in MSDOS mode, when it reboots and you get the command prompt, type format C:, and answer yes to all of the questions)

Then I would reinstall windows, and norton system works. I'd use the norton wipe info on the free space of the drive, and then I'd format C again.....

Then load it up with whatever you had on there before.

if you really need to get rid of it, then melt the thing down into a ball of metal and fire it into space..... the guys in the white lab coats are very good at recovering almost anything. If they find it, they will get into it.

Once information is on a hard disk recovery specialists can get all the data off of it. The only way to remove information would be to destroy the HD. Using fire and magnets is a good way to destroy an HD.
