Do you understand aussies talking english?

English is not my native lang, but usually i'm having problem to understand what they say. I can't say this is the case with most rappers lol

nofx 03-06-2006 05:56 PM

I like it when d00t whispers sweet nothings into my ear with his aussie accent

PixeLs 03-06-2006 06:21 PM

It's not easy to understand them especially when they're speaking fast.

jjjay 03-06-2006 06:24 PM

easy to understand. don't understand when people have trouble with different accents in english, except when there's a lot of local dialect/slang used like in glasgow

Theo 03-06-2006 06:31 PM

Talking fast can be the case. I swear I never had problem understanding Canadians. I watch dvds with no subtitles and listen to IT/managerial speeches while working with np either. Some american accents are hard as well.

jjjay 03-06-2006 06:46 PM

apart from obvious american accents (texas...etc.) I have a real hard time telling the difference between the US and Canadian accent.

anyone know the trick?

rowan 03-06-2006 06:50 PM

Gooday moite how ya goooing cobber?? Throw another shreemp on tha baaarrbie

(I've seen documentaries with Australians speaking legible, cultured English that have subtitles. Do they think we're retards?)

Mickey_ 03-06-2006 07:01 PM

I have to concentrate every time CTB talks:winkwink:

Theo 03-06-2006 07:03 PM

Hehe texans accent is extremely hard. All these western movies didn't make a difference ;-)

OzMan 03-06-2006 07:41 PM

"I look in the corner and there's Bass sittin there, not getting into it, not getting out of it, I said "What, is Bass Strait or somthin?"

sickbeatz 03-06-2006 07:45 PM

I can understand them, probably because a lot of them come to BC all the time for visiting, work, etc. I don't trust them though, they're too kind. I always feel that they are up to something.

reynold 03-06-2006 08:51 PM

honestly I can still understand irish and scotts but aussie accent is giving me a hard time

Czech 03-07-2006 12:37 AM

I have no problems understanding - I'm an Aussie :)

watch "Trainspotting" and try to understand more than two words of what these fuckers are saying ;)

quantum-x 03-07-2006 12:50 AM

I unconsiously make the effort when I'm overseas to speak in a very proper english accent.

Seriously, it depends what part of Australia you're from, and how you were brought up, just like anywhere else.

The cultured Manchanian accent is easy to understand, for example, but good fucking luck trying to understand the scallies.

Bluewire Ross 03-07-2006 12:59 AM

I am having a hard time understanding them, specially when they talk too fast.

reynold 03-07-2006 04:30 AM

but why is it that when they sing, they loose the accent?

Mr. Romance 03-07-2006 04:39 AM

Ive never a a problem with anyone understanding my pronunciation when I talk...
but of course aussies have their whole own brand of language and a lot of the words we use .. well their meaning are not understood by other english speaking countries but you get that with any colloquialisms in any language anyway.

southerners and especially tasmanians have hints of brittish accents and tend to speak "proper" eblgish as opposed to the northerners who sound liek steve irwin and say words incorrectly such as "NothinK"(instead of 'nothing') and "anythinK"

..... also the way to pick a canadian accent is they talk thru their noses more than yanks, are a bit more whiny... yanks tend to talk in the back of their throats and of course the more southern there is more drawl.

East coast speak twice as fast as west cost. (university research showed that new yorkers hear in 60 minutes of new what would take over 90 minutes to read in LA)

GlydeGirl 03-07-2006 01:23 PM

I just tune my ear to the flow of the language. After a couple of minutes, my ears are adjusted to understand how the accents affect their speech and everything works fine.

My problem is that I start to talk with my own version of their accent when speaking to them -- a sympathetic accent. Kinda like how Madonna talks these days with a British accent.

I'm getting better at it; but, na na, you still can't say aiight, right.

For those who have issues with Aussie accents, just say:

WTF did you say, you big Aussie bastard?

They're pretty good about slowing down and repeating....

LOL Really?

I never really realized that our accent is hard to understand :)

City residents in Texas aren't so tough; but get with a real cowboy? Dayum.

Worst accent I ever had decipering was a guy in Macon, Georgia. Didn't understand a word he said. Ever. And, no help with the tobacco in his mouth. Seems the deeper the South, the thicker the accent. No wonder there's so much inbreeding ....(don't jump on me, Peaches -- I lived amongst the Jerry Springer crowd for way too long) LOL

EdgeXXX 03-07-2006 02:21 PM

That's odd. I have never had a hard time understanding any of the dialects in English (granted English IS my first language). I can understand Aussies, Scots, Irish, Brits, South Africans, etc. and all regional US accents just fine. :)

Yep, that would be me (and yeah I do have a deep Texan accent, but I do enunciate and speak clearly, so I am probably easier to understand than most)... guilty :winkwink:
