Alcohol abuse can cause a condition called "fatty liver" or another called "alcohol hepatitis" -- both of which can be treated, but only if alcohol consumption is stopped. If drinking continues, these conditions will cause cirrhosis of the liver.


Hardening of the Liver
What happens is the liver begins to harden. Scar tissue develops in the body's largest organ which hinders its ability to filter blood. When the scar tissue develops to a certain point, the liver can no longer do its work.
The problem is the liver performs more than 1,500 functions for the body, including more than 300 life-saving procedures. If the liver stops doing its job, all kinds of health problems develop quickly and death can come rapidly.

The liver detoxifies poisons, both those produced by the body and those from outside; filters bacteria from the blood; regulates fat metabolism; stores and manufactures vitamins; regulates and manufactures cholesterol and fats; synthesizes proteins; maintains the body's water and salt balance; secretes bile for the digestion of fat; stores energy (in the form of glycogen) helps regulate overall body metabolism; transforms the highly toxic ammonia (produced by exercise and by metabolism of proteins) into urea which is eliminated in the urine; manufactures lipoproteins for fat and cholesterol transport; and metabolizes alcohol.

If the liver stops doing any of these jobs, or numerous others it does constantly, the result is fatal.

that depends on the chapter. I grew up in an AA family. My father and most of his real friends that went though AA didn't become overwhelmed by the religion aspect. Some need it - some don't.

lol...true we will...but to call someone a "quiter" that has a serious problem that needs to take a closer look at his life.....that person is far from quiter, that is someone who has woken up and maybe wants to live.....

Its not really something to humor about, its a very serious subject and many of my friends have died....and its all fucked up.

What is trully amazing to me how un educated the public is to this.....it is just amazing to me.

hmmm well the fact that alcoholism can lead to further medical problem (ex: cirrhosis of the liver) doesnt make it a disease....(im not even argueing the fact that alcoholism is a disease or not here...) just saying that this arguement doesnt mean anything...

alcoholism is an addiction...just like drug addiction etc...

Since we are the subject why not share, since you seem to be calling me out and i am in the mood to tell you...

I had a daughter with a woman, carried our baby girl for 9 months, when our daughter was 1 her mother decided that doing drugs and drinking was far better than being the mother to her own daughter....now you tell me that is only one of millions of stories like that....you dont think this deal is for real?

Think again...booze and drugs is the only fucked up thing that no matter how much you want to stop no matter how far down the ladder of life you have traveled ...how much you have lost....it still talks to you...tells you are ok....and you dont have a problem...what is that?

Oh on the daughter, i have been a full time dad 24/7 and the mother has always be able to see her own daughter if she chooses but she doesnt, she chooses the other shit....i stop trying too figure out that happens...it just does.

I think you have me confused for someone else.... I come from an Irish family... I'm certified and allowed to make jokes about drinking problems, substance abuse, and meetings. I'm losing a dear friend as we speak to drinking induced heart disease. I think you need to lighten up.

Mike Hawk was calling some guy an idiot because he was saying that alcoholism isnt a disease....

As an argument to prove his point, he said (Mike) that alcoholism can cause hardening of the liver etc...

I, in turn, observed that, although alcoholism can lead to terrible health issues, (i.e. liver problems, death...) it does NOT make it a disease...

Then, I used cigarette as an example of something that can lead to bad health, without being a disease...

Now I dont see how I could make it any easier

sorry dude, there are many things that lead to medial issues that can be named chronic, but that doesn't make then a disease. And quoting the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism isn't helping your case either. it's like asking the republicans to justify their exsistance.

Alcohol abuse can be stoped by one thing.....changing one's behavior.

I just don't agree with calling addiction a disease. It's not a fucking disease. People who have cancer have a disease. Alcoholics have an addiction. Oh, hell, YES addiction is serious - but you brought it on yourself. No one forced you to drink, but no one can control whether they get leukemia.

I still dont think it has anything to do with addiction...

If I decide to start drinking (or even if im forced to it), then cant stop it...im addicted to it...its a bad thing, granted...

its still no medical condition like being bi-polar or schizophreniac

Im not saying that alcoholism isnt a serious problem, that it isnt really hard to overcome etc...I have a bunch of alcoholics in my family (serious ones...even uncles that lost their houses, wives etc..) and I will be the first to admit that its a terrible thing, and a serious issue...

I just...dont think its a disease...
