Saw a story about an elderly lady age 87 who is facing jail now in kentucky. What did she do ? She was selling her own prescription painkillers to supplement her social security check.

Dirty Dane 12-13-2005 07:19 AM

Take care of your parents - because no one else will :(

Brujah 12-13-2005 07:23 AM

Dottie Neeley, 87, was fingerprinted, photographed and thrown in jail, imprisoned as much by the tubing from her oxygen tank as by the concrete and steel around her.

The sad part is that these people worked their lives to fund their children's comfortable lives and helped fund the country's wealth and now they are thrown to the dogs. Sad indeed. At one point they had hope to get their meds in Canada but the pharmaceutical companies have tightened their grip on the legal online pharmacies in Canada so it's not as easy to get a prescription filled.

yes, that is a felony.

Drake 12-13-2005 07:35 AM

Even the soldiers fighting in Iraq today 'for our freedom' will face the same problem 40 years from now when their country has forgotten that they laid their life on the line.

It doesn't matter your patriotism in the end.

Pete-KT 12-13-2005 07:36 AM

The US Government spent $7.2 billion in 2004 classifying new documents and reclassifying old documents to prevent their release.

I don't recall whether this took place during WWI or WWII, but I remember watching a film about a bunch of returning soldiers, out of work and poor, many of them well armed, who took it upon themselves to march on Washington DC and demand better treatment and government assistance; if memory serves this led to the origin (or expansion of) the GI Bill which included better medical benefits for veterans and affordable home loans.

I wonder if today's generation of returning military will demonstrate the courage and tenacity of their grandparents generation.

Hey, I read that last night as well. I guess it's really getting out of hand in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.

Originally SS was never intended to be a retirement plan. It was intended to only supplement private savings...other retirement etc. Congress continued to expand upon SS increasing benefits and introducing medical coverage.

When SS was first introduced the average life span of a retiree (age 65) was 67. During this period all that a recipient had paid in was withdrawn within the first eighteen months. This 18 month period has not changed much because of the increased benefits and medical coverage...but yet the average life span has changed dramatically...thus overburdening the system.

The retirement age for some in X age group has been increased to 67...but realistically this number should currently be 69 or 70 and as time passes will have to be increased to a higher number.

For whatever the reasons people instead of viewing SS as a supplement to their savings...investments and other retirement as well as private medical insurance...began to develop the attitude that SS was to be their sole retirement and medical coverage.

There is a thing called personal responsibility but this is a trait that has deteriorated over the years and has turned into a "you owe me"/"give me" society of people.

Imagine if we would have spent all that time, money and resources used in Iraq, on fighting terrorism and helping secure our country from additional terrorist attacks?

There are so many things we should have spent the money on (and should be spending the money on) before Iraq. It is very sad.

Imagine that you could have broad foresight and not micro sight.

Imagine that the money and resources used in Iraq is fighting terrorism and the spread of democracy is the long term tool being egaged to fight terrorism and reduce the risk of additional terrorist attacks against the US as well as the western world.

Broad foresight like GW? Sorry, but I've owned smarter parakeets than our current "president."

There aren?t too many people around who still buy this load of crap.
Start reading some newspapers and quit with the FoxNews nonsense.

You were sold this fighting terrorism in Iraq and spreading democracy and how this is making your ass safe in the US??

Dream on! :1orglaugh

Webby 12-14-2005 01:53 AM

Seriously... there is more relevant shit than playing games pretending to spread democracy on the planet.

The day seniors.. and eveyone else, have accessible healthcare (without being dosed on cocktails of drugs), the homeless in Louisanna have a roof over their heads, all funding siphoned out of pensions is replaced and unemployment rates are a low as possible is the day contemplation can start on "freeing the world" and "spreading democracy". All that shit starts at home and tho nothing may be perfect at all times - it's a long way from being near perfect.
