Best hardcore/metal album?

I been listening to Slayer - Live Decade of Aggression for like a week now. Is there any better that I can listen to to break the cycle I'm in? I love this album so much.

Ryker's - Payback Time (hardcore, not metal)

AcidMax 12-12-2005 11:16 AM

Deftones is one of my favs. For a little harder rock, look into Dead Horse, Hatebreed or any D.R.I. (Dirty Rottem Imbeciles)

AcidMax 12-12-2005 11:27 AM

FYI D.R.I. is on I-Tunes as well. Been a fan of theirs since the 80's. They kick ass if you have never heard of em.

Maxy 12-12-2005 11:28 AM

Don't lump deftones in here please :(

Babagirls 12-12-2005 11:29 AM

is Linkin Park "hardcore"? :1orglaugh

Chio 12-12-2005 11:29 AM

I was going to recommend Slayer's God Hates Us All :1orglaugh

What's wrong with Deftones? I love The Deftones. Have since long before they were "cool" or had a label. What type of music are they? I am to the age now where I don't really listen to any particular type, I just listen to what I like. I'm just listening to a little "heavier" stuff this week. Seems to be motivating me. Next week for all I know it could be Harry Connick Jr. or Sinatra or Stravinsky...

Do Deftones rank in as "heavier"?

Check out M.O.D. too if you want to listen to some seriously hysterical and non politically correct metal.

Stuntpig 12-12-2005 11:34 AM

Goblin Cock
Bagged and Boarded
[Absolutely Kosher; 2005]
Rating: 7.3

Way back on Heavy Vegetable's second astonishing album, Frisbie, Rob Crow(lately of Pinback, for the most part) defended his distaste for the radio by listing stuff they never played on it: Slint, Sentridoh, Zappa, Beefheart, Can, The Residents, VU. See any metal in that list? Neither do I. Was Rob Crow managing to hear some metal anyhow? You bet your ass. Is Goblin Cock as "joke-metal" as it sounds like it should be? Just about. Its chugging, Tolkien-core centerpiece is an ode to "Kegrah the Dragon Killer". Plus the liner notes include lyrics written in runes.

Goblin Cock never quite goes Spinal Tap, though; this is by no means your simple "Metal is pretty funny" put-down record. There was always a seriousness of chops and a whiff of that gloriously bloated prog- and/or death-metal surrounding 90s-Crow projects Heavy Vegetable and Thingy, and Bagged and Boarded is the noxious encroaching cloud that whiff's blossomed into over the years. If faux-classical acoustic guitar and synth on "Hissy (Intro)" is the go-nowhere warmup to some magnum opus, then "Stumped" (like the bulk of Bagged and Boarded) must be Really Heavy Vegetable, with Crow's practiced nasal yelp thinly breaking through the band's mutant-Sabbath dirge. Speaking of twisted Black Sabbath descendants, the Queens of the Stone Age quotient's equally high on "Childproof"; it's got excruciating old sex-ed film reel samples that reaffirm the "cock" theme with 50s Dad-to-son explanations of the old, shall we say, equipment and what sometimes comes out of it while male teens dream, recalling a certain porn interlude on Dr. Octagon's Dr. Octagonecologyst. "Gee, our bodies are complicated, aren't they Dad?" It's hard not to laugh and cringe simultaneously.

Great Uncle GWAR would be so proud. Lord Phallus, Bane Ass-Pounder, King Sith, Braindeath, and keyboardist Loki Sinjuggler drop that imaginary line between humor and horror down front and center, forcing listeners to straddle it with them. On "Revenge of Snufalufagus", "Sesame Street'"s gentle Snufalufagus directs his murderous, vengeful bloodlust toward Mr. Hooper and/or Big Bird. "The Werewomb"-- Cannibal Corpse outtake though that may sound-- is about the closest the record comes to unearthing a nugget of vintage mid-90s Crow. "Winkey Dinky Donkey" (not a Raffi cover, amazingly) might hold that same distinction but for its opening minute of double-tracked vocals and riffs that, melodically, live right next door to Metallica's ...And Justice For All.

What I can't do is honestly recommend any of this to your strict Pinbackers or serious metalheads in want of some inroad into either indie or Rob Crow's byzantine bandscape. The somewhat brittle production, dearth of any blast beat/guitar screed overkill, and lax musicianship will offend a good deal of those hardened listener's ears even if Goblin Cock's upfront skewering of metal's silliest conventions fails to. As comic book collectors will recognize the moment they read the album title, a sense of humor going in is utterly, 100% required.

One glance at the cover sears this image into your retina: Goblin Cock as iconic heavy metal D&D bad guy's purply veined phallus. The band's name is also a sly pun on the performance of enthusiastic fellatio. Still, it's just as funny to picture Goblin Cock as the biggest, meanest, ugliest armored black rooster in the history of Things Frank Frazetta Never Got Around to Painting, and a leather-clad Rob Crow strumming distorted power chords to the rhythmic fall of his steed's ghastly red talons.

Never really listened to em, but if they are anything like D.R.I. I am sure I would. Will have to check em out :)

Now I am sitting here remembering my childhood and the music I used to listen, and sitting here jamming to D.R.I. - Four of a Kind.

I remember back in they day listening to bands like. Misfits / Danzig, Accept, Helix, Slayer, Dio, Halloween, Ratt, D.R.I., M.O.D/S.O.D. and a host of others.

I like newer metal too, but I like a ton of different music from Steve Miller to Slayer. It's all what moves me at the time. Deftones are probably one of my favorite all time bands and I would consider them metal, at the same time I think Linkin Park is a fantastic band as well.

Tons of good artists out there, but my favorites go back to my childhood.

Back to D.R.I. - Think for yourself

But I'm more of an old school Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensryche, Dream Theater girl.

I have not heard of many people who have heard of Dead Horse. Their band is just awesome, I remember hearing them when I was in a metal band back in the early 90's called (D.I.E. - Death is Eternal). Some of the guys in the band told me about em and I have liked em ever since. Peaceful Death and Pretty Flowers I have here on MP3.

I also remember bands like Skankin Pickle which were just awesome to listen to back in the day.

Project-Shadow 12-12-2005 11:51 AM

Killswitch Engage if you're into the new metalcore scene [Self Titled is the more hardcore, then its crosses over with AOJB, then TEoH is more melodic metal]
Hatebreed - Perserverance, Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption, Marduk - Heaven Shall Burn... When we are gathered, OTEP - Sevas Tra [has a few aggro songs.. rest is shit]

Rock on ^^

The best heavy metal album on planet earth is "Slayer - Show No Mercy". It is even better than "Metallica - Kill em' all", which comes in close second.

Sly 12-12-2005 11:55 AM

I've really been into Children of Bodom lately. And of course, Lamb of God, though my death metal guitarist brother tells me they have "sold out", haha.

I've found that an awesome way to find new music is to search MySpace. Find a band you like and search through their friends list, you'll find tons of similar stuff, primarily smaller bands that could always use support.

Funny ass lyrics ... M.O.D. You're Beat

You're Beat
Start up the car
You ain't going very far
Stick the rubber hose on the exhaust

Breathe that fresh air
It'll take away your cares
You're beat the game is over
And you've lost

Y.B........
You're beat
Before you start
You cry defeat

Sitting in the bathroom
With the razor at your wrist
You mom and dad don't like
The dudes you're hanging with
They say that you're a loser
A disgrace to human kind
If I were you I'd end it all
Before I lost my mind

Y.B......
You're beat
Before you start
You cry defeat

I watched a story about Metal the other day and though I do like it the bands I prefer to listen to are considered the "New Metal" starting with bands like System of A Down and Deftones started this, maybe one of the reasons why Maxy stated that....

my list

system of a down
clutch
seether
SlipKnot

just to name a few but Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast is right up there with Black Sabbath

WebairGerard 12-12-2005 12:31 PM

Not really hardcore though they can get pretty heavy... I would say System of a Down has some killer albums. Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power STILL kicks ass!!

Hey anyone here ever listen to the old Death Angel then they became "DA" because they didn't think they were heavy enough to be called Death Angel anymore. :) Talented band.
