Alright... let's hear your philipenes stories.. bring em on!

It looks like I'm going and still a little nervous!

In LA I heard opposing opinions of the safety there, the weather, certain little things I need to know about their customs etc, and way too many stories of what can happen if I get stuck in the wrong neighborhood.

Nick sent me some gorgeous pics though.

And .. the whole security guard thing media said women have to have them.. Is this really true?

Spill your guts guys!

FreeHugeMovies 11-26-2005 03:17 PM

The only bad stories are the outsourcing ones. =]

Don't give Anthony a complex!

seeric 11-26-2005 03:37 PM

its jsut like the u.s. you owuldn't go hanging around in compton or nothing on purpose. i am sure that you will be safe. being out after dark takes some getting used to in foreign countries. there are places that the police won't even go. like anthony said, dee and crew will make sure you go through "greenbean" training i'm sure. :)

Rui 11-26-2005 04:23 PM

I'm pretty sure you will be well taken care of ;)

Are you looking into check some new places or just going "business only" ;)

CuriousToyBoy 11-26-2005 04:29 PM

1. NEVER trust a Filipino.

2. DON'T take women or children.

3. STICK with people who know the place.

4. BE nice to, but take NO shit from Trike drivers, street husslers etc etc

5. DO NOT give to begging children.

6. REMEMBER the locals will ALWAYS rip you off if given a chance.

The list is a long one, but you will love the place.

;-)

latinasojourn 11-26-2005 04:57 PM

safety is good in major cities (manila, cebu, dumaguete, etc)

in southern provinces in rural areas you need to exercise some care if you are not a native (Mindanao, esp). there are NPA rebels, muslim extremists, etc. that don't necessary want to hurt you, but want your $, and will have no problem taking it from you by force. there have been a few kidnap for ransom situations.

do not carry many pesos, relax, and have a good time. 99% of flips are friendly and harmless.

take your sunblock, you are near the equator.

I have many PI tales, however I only share them one-on-one when I'm drunk.

Be careful and have fun,

Hmmm it has been almost 20 years since I have been there, but some of these probably still hold true:

1) Mojo, Bullfrog and even large amounts of San Miguel or Redhorse beer have no effect on you until you stand up.
2) If it smells like fish, eat all you wish, but if it smells like cologne, leave it alone.
3) Trike tackling, though fun, is frowned upon and you may get stabbed with a local street vendor's barbecue sticks as punishment.
4) Playing basketball with chickens will cost you roughly 100 pisos per.
5) The tagalog word for "love", mahal is the same as the word for "expensive".
6) Don't swim in the rivers.
7) If you think you should bribe or offer somebody something, you are probably correct.
8) A butterfly is not a pretty winged insect.
9) You should take full advantage of "cherry boy" staus and its associated discounts for as long as possible.
10) Trobicin cures a lot of ills, but not all of them.

BlackCrayon 11-26-2005 05:12 PM

i don't know why people want to visit there. stop hiring outsourced slave workers!

I wish somebody had have told me all of that the first time I walked off base at NAS Cubi Point back in 1976 - I can still remember the sights, the sounds, and oh yeah, the smells, as I crossed Shit River into Olongapo City.

The 7th fleet was out, so there was like 5,000 hookers just waiting for me...

Suddenly in the mood for some lumpia and barbeque...

Station Dito!

That's where I was too. 1/2 time at Patrol Wind One, 1/2 time at this little shack half way between the strip and the hospital.

Good times - I too can still small that disgusting mix of shit and diesel exhause. How I miss it...

I had it tough...I was stationed at a Staff Command in Japan, and had to go down to Cubi and Subic on inspections every month or so - basically an hour or two of work followed by two days of debauchery.

Of course we would always leave back to Japan with a few cases of painted label San Miguel which would basically pay for our trip (typically I spent $40-$60 on a weekend, got laid 4-5 times and partied down to some kick ass cover bands that could play anything, while getting blasted on Mojo).

Things only got dicey when one of my regular hookers caught me with another one of my regular hookers. We didn't have to worry about AIDS back then, just the Olongapo Ouch (aka the Osan Ouch in Korea).

Times have changed, but it's still a lot of fun in the PI (Manila, Angeles City, etc)...

Enjoy your time and get to see as much as possible

One thing I didnt like about Manila was the smell on the street at night. They employ people to sort through rubbish bags to put stuff in bundles so they go to the correct place.

Dee has his own maid, driver and stuff so you'll be well taken care of like I was when he took me out there.

Pornwolf 11-26-2005 10:43 PM

Nowadays if you get the Olongapo Ouch you have been blessed from above. They have shit in the PI that will kill you in 24 hours.

Greenbelt, Eastwood City, Rockwell, and Gateway/Araneta are great places in the Metro. If you really want to experience the "Tropical Life" try Boracay or Buswanga for diving and great beaches. Enjoy your stay. MABUHAY (Filipino greetings).

Right on. You'll love the sand. I was there 3 years ago. One of the best white sand beaches... Great restaurants, too. :thumbsup

Sound advice...Cebu is nice and Subic is OK. Angeles City can be fun but stay at hotels near the bar areas and avoid trikes. Old days picking up girls in streets and shops was fun. These days I worry about ages as its hard to be sure they are over 18. 30 year olds with baby faces and most foreigners cannot tell ....and younger that look old enough everywhere.

I wear an Omega and go to the Phillipines often..... not a problem. One rule is dont get in a fight or anything like one with a Filipino. Just enjoy!
