Gorgeous surf, Huntington Beach (pics)

Took a job this weekend doing some surf photography in Huntington Beach. It was gorgeous out. Nice swell filling in all along the OC. Love it when the sunshine greets you first thing in the morning :)

Had a few extra pictures I was dabbling through, thought you might enjoy.

Good shit my man - what lens is that?

Watch the sand while at the beach - cameras don't like sand :thumbsup

Nismo 10-30-2005 10:19 PM

The quote in your sig is gold.

Cory W 10-30-2005 10:21 PM

Dean,

I am using the (non-IS) F/2.8 70-200 with the 2X extender. Pulls me out 400MM.

The sand is a big issue man. Actually, I am very lucky. The Canon Corporate office is walking distance of the Weg office and they clean the camera for free, any time. Funny, I walk in there and there are tons of surf photographers getting cleaning jobs. I guess it goes with the territory.

Not sure what precautions I can take for protecting it? Are there any bags I should use to cover it?

MikeHawk 10-30-2005 10:25 PM

Great pics buddy! :thumbsup

Fuck off!!! I'm in Florida where 2 1/2 glass is a great day! :Oh crap

Only the little kids can get away with riding short boards on swells that we have here. The rest of us grown folks have to ride long just to get up. I have a fun shape long and its the only board I can take out. My 6'4" just doesn't do it for me here.

I have a fun shape myself. I may hit Florida next year and shoot some surf and catch some waves there, you guys have the Hurricane market cornered. Haha

400mm - wow, that's nice man. Are you shooting on a tripod or handheld? My only suggestion would be to get those guys out of the center of the frame. Once you got them in focus, recompose the image with space in front of the guys instead of space behind them. I love the action that you caught - good stuff bro' :thumbsup

MicroChick 10-31-2005 01:55 AM

What happened to the pictures?

I am getting red X's.

MicroChick 10-31-2005 02:14 AM

I guess the Halloween ghosts temporarily took them.

Good pictures, Cory. :thumbsup

Actually, I am shooting from a monopod. It allows me to move into better positions for the morning sun.

Thanks for the tip. I will aim for that next time. Sometimes I shoot from my far (left or right) AF Point, you think that works just as well? I am getting faster on the draw for the composition, being a surfer helps a tremendous amount.

Thanks Dean, the lighting is the toughest barrier without a doubt. We should get together the next time I am down in San Diego for lunch.

Those were actually head highs rolling in. I am more about the shape than the size. The wedge is a thrill, but the shape can be pretty poor and not offer a lot to anyone other than a body boarder.

I shot the wedge once, but under a really agressive sun...didn't like the look. I want to do an early morning deal down there next big swell, just have to find someone that wants to paddle out (not easy) :)

Vanilla DeVille 10-31-2005 12:11 PM

I use an extender with this:

Love that lense. My biggest investment, but it is essential for quality and low-light...at least for me!

axelcat 10-31-2005 12:30 PM

awesome pics

Poppy 10-31-2005 04:27 PM

Awesome pics Cory. I do hope this Winter brings many nice swells. You have motivated me to get my ass back in the water.
