I've been out of the Notebook market for quite a while, but as far as durability and longevity goes, I bought a Micron 5 years ago and it's still going strong..... granted it's slow as fuck compared to today's systems, but I have never once had a single hardware problem with it..... I would buy from them again without hesitation.

corvette 03-12-2002 01:51 PM

.

Smegma 03-12-2002 01:51 PM

My Dell Inspiron 8000 is awesome.. and most importantly, it was the only laptop that had a 3d accelerator so I could play FS2002 and Quake III Arena

Za Ha 03-12-2002 01:51 PM

1) Sony
2) Toshiba

One brand I certainly WOULDN'T recommend is COMPAQ

and make sure if you get a new notbook that it doesn't have XP or if it does - that it hasn't been built specifically for XP , so you can put win2kpro on it
Unless of course you like XP , in which case you must come from another planet so you probably have great notebooks in space anyhow! ;)

Get a Clie - it's the PeeChee folder of notebooks.

BrettJ 03-12-2002 02:51 PM

I have a toshiba. it sucks. the dvd player couldn't hold up to the amount i played it - once a day for 6 months. the network card crapped out after 8 months. the usb ports crapped out at a year. (all under warranty ... 4 year ... thru circuit city... cuz i'm smart, but still).

Go with Dell. Awesome display. GREAT soundcard (rated #1 in industry)

darksoft 03-12-2002 02:58 PM

I got a Dell, dude.. Inspiron 8100... kicks ass

Jamie 03-12-2002 03:02 PM

Sony Vaio FX series

CD Rom/DVD/Burner in one, Floppy, Ethernet, 56k Modem, built into the unit.

The sony has the clearest and largest screens, 15" viewable.. they own!

I've done some work on the Vaio. That is not a bad machine at all.

zubr 03-12-2002 03:58 PM

I recommend HP stuff !!!
sorry got no ref code for this dumb company :(

boneprone 03-12-2002 04:04 PM

agreed. Sony is the way to go on notebooks

boneprone 03-12-2002 04:04 PM

i put mine in the oven and it still works!

Kimmykim 03-12-2002 04:05 PM

I'm not a Dell fan...

I did notice that Gateways got some good deals running on notebooks right now.

just need to be careful that what you do end up with is upgradeable if you ever want to, there's nothing worse than being stuck with a box that sucks.

Jer 03-12-2002 04:08 PM

I have a Toshiba Satellite (bought it 1 year ago), it is pretty good.
But Dell rocks too. My Desktop is a Dell.

Jer 03-12-2002 04:09 PM

Alvaro Jr, where are you from ? :)

theWatsonian 03-12-2002 04:12 PM

I've upgraded Dells, Gateways and Vaios. Except for instances of proprietary bios that needed to be updated they have always been very easy work. Those are solid machines. Can't say the same for Compaq or HP.

Amputate Your Head 03-12-2002 04:13 PM

Stay away from Compaq unless you enjoy proprietary headaches.

RAM 03-12-2002 04:23 PM

I recomend you buy Mine...for 1,200.00

I will ship it next day air.

Let me know if your interested.

Jamdin 03-12-2002 04:50 PM

I've got a friend who was recently shipped overseas & he wants a Compaq notebook with a CD-RW. However, his wife called me this morning asking if I would buy it for them. I said sure and she started sending me all these links while I was looking at the refurbished notebooks. I finally had to tell her that my credit limit is ony $1000. I haven't heard back from her since.

I found other brands with much better prices & equipment but he insists on a Compaq.

echo465 03-12-2002 08:34 PM

You can get a Compaq Presario 1200z laptop for under a grand.. 1Gig Athlon, 15(?)G HDD, CDRW/DVD, onboard nic and modem.

I used to have a Dell Inspiron 7000 (before they were replaced by the 7500's). I picked up my unzipped laptop case from the rental car's passenger seat, and it tumbled onto the pavement..... .without a scratch! My complaint about this one was the weight.

A co-worker of mine has a sony vaio. He thinks that it's pretty underpowered, and it does have a small screen, but it is very lightweight.

My daughter accidentally knocked my Compaq Presario 1210US off the couch onto the carpeted floor. It landed on the right side, jamming the wireless NIC into the motherboard, toasting the PCMCIA slot, the onboard NIC and Modem. Not covered under warranty. Shit.

I just bought another 1210US to replace it.

I just got me first laptop,
Dell Inspiron 8200. I haven't received yet so I can't tell whether it's any good.
I'm not even sure I will get it, they might think I use it to make chemical weapons with it. I'm a potential suspect.

UnseenWorld 03-12-2002 11:57 PM

I have an HP Pavilion n5445 which I like. Aside from being delivered with some bad memory, which HP replaced very promptly (their service unit was easy to get in touch with and very helpful, overnighting me the replacement memory), the unit has proven very solid and easy to use with no particular peculiarities.

theWatsonian 03-13-2002 12:08 AM

My last laptop was an Apple Powerbook 165 with a monochrome display.

TaDoW 03-13-2002 12:10 AM

Dell inspiron .. this thing is the shit

no matter what, get a dell..

Freeway 03-13-2002 03:46 AM

God.
I can't beleive all the crappy suggestions everyone gave.
Do yourself a favor http://apple.com/powerbook/
