Very aggressive personalities when grown. Along the line of the Sharpai. Very defensive of it's territory.

lilspup 10-04-2005 02:46 AM

They will take to one person. All the people I know with chows say they are not really family dogs, but they sure are cute :)

True. BTW people should read as much info about their favourite breed to prevent unpleasant surprises.
Every dog´s behaviour depends on how he is brought up of course, but certain genetic qualities can not be changed.

The worst thing to do is to choose your dog just because of his looks.

But maybe the chow would be make perfect match for you :) Our neighbour had one some time ago. His was not very friendly to strangers, but was devoted to his owner very much.

Violetta 10-04-2005 03:30 AM

isnt that cute! :1orglaugh

Expo_Vids 10-04-2005 05:50 AM

I love dogs. I love dogs so much that one time I stood in front of a speeding city bus in order to keep it from running over a dog I have never even seen before.

But I HATE Chows. A totally pathetic breed of dog. I can't see why anyone would want to own one of those bastards.

wildgirl 10-04-2005 05:57 AM

They're so cute :)

poppet 10-04-2005 05:59 AM

I have a gorgeous half german shepard half chow female. She looks like a shephard with a cowl and one floppy ear, (the other is upright). Very cute and sweet, but shy and defensive until she gets to know someone.

amandaspost 10-04-2005 06:05 AM

awww they're soo cute! :)

Sweet Smile 10-04-2005 06:16 AM

they are cute and cuddly....I want them all :)

C_U_Next_Tuesday 10-04-2005 06:19 AM

I hate chows... I have yet to meet one that isnt mean. I would feel eaiser about petting a stray pitbull then I would a chow...if you get one.. make sure you socialize it properly and teach it (if you can) to know what people pose a threat and what people are just house guests.

Jimbo 10-04-2005 06:20 AM

you will until that fucking piece of 1 brain cell makes the most expensive carpet in your house his pee spot daily.

some dogs just never fkin leaarn, it's sad

EroticySteve 10-04-2005 06:24 AM

Yeah, I'm not sure how Chows continue to be pets people keep. Other than being cute puppies, they offer very little.

Yup, my best friend has chows, you DO wanna check out a chow first, read bout them, visit an owner, theyre not the normal kinda dog.

Theyre 100% dedicated to the owner, this goes as far as not even accepting to be fed by your gf or so, theyre stuck up, not cuddly like so many kids think (theyll bite) and you gotta go to puppy courses for sure, if you dont wanna end up with a dog thats impossible to keep.

Theres a big diff between a dog thats strong and dangerous if its made that way like a pitbull and one thats born that way and not a dog thats there to socialize.

If you got kids then forget the whole story as well. Cats arent easy too for chows. Like I said read a lot bout them, theyre not the usual dog.

Ive know my best friends first chow for years, he accepts me cause I knew him when he was a puppy, but still tries to bite me once a while...

Spunky 10-04-2005 06:27 AM

MindyBlingBucks 10-04-2005 08:14 AM

Do they shed a lot? It looks like you'd have their hair all over EVERYTHING.

Tam 10-04-2005 08:22 AM

I had one of these dogs once, and I have to say, while I loved him, he was brutal to my son. I had two kids at the time and didn't know much other than they were cute. BOY, did I ever learn not to pick a dog because it was cute again. My oldest son was like 5-6 at the time and he is THE single most laid back kid you'd ever hope to meet, very calm, nothing excites him or anything, and a HUGE heart, was and is kind to everything. This dog was horrible with him. I heard screaming one day and looked out my window and this fucker was dragging my son by his shorts from his bicycle by his shorts, and ripped his clothes all to hell. LUCKILY I got there in time before he had completely pulled him off the bike, god knows what would have happened.

This dog was spoiled, as all of my animals are, NEVER had been hit, abused and only disciplined gently, but he had a thing in his head that I didn't much care for. I got rid of him ASAP and did some looking and found that these dogs are extremely aggressive and aren't good childhood pets at ALL.

If you have kids, cute or not, I would strongly advise against these dogs. Yeah I know it is in the way you train them, but some just don't make good kid pets.

CherryLipsRosa 10-04-2005 08:40 AM

They do shed a lot look out if you have allergies!

SleazeQueen 10-04-2005 08:43 AM

Another thing to consider is that I believe that Chow is one of the "Dangerous Dog Breeds" that some insurance companies have added to their list of dogs they won't cover. A friend of mine, who owns a pet supply store and shows dogs, has an arthritic old german sheppard and her insurance company cancelled her without notice because her sheppard barked out the window at an appraiser. Their dog was never vicious and never bit anyone. It was sleeping on it's couch by the window, heard a noise and barked at it. End of their insurance policy.

Gotta be careful you really know all the ins and outs of your dog breeds before you buy.

MandyBlake 10-04-2005 08:46 AM

those dogs are adorable but will take up a lot of time and energy for grooming.
may i suggest a boston terrier?

exactly - no kids dogs, they look like small bears to kids huggable n all but they arent, the biting in the ankles is what they do btw, its their way of correcting human behaviour, Ive seen that with 3 of them.

Penrod 10-04-2005 08:52 AM

I have 2 and they are both very good dogs. They are very territorial of our house and property but awesome with myself my wife and our 19 month old girl. One of them did not care she was even there when she was born but the other has been a teddy bear with her ever since she was an infant. The other has grown to love her as well.

Dogs are dogs. It is how you raise them. Every now and then you get really smart mutts and really stupid pure breds. It's a crap shoot.

chazer 10-04-2005 09:13 AM

they are cute, but like other have said then can be a bitch, definetly not a good idea if you have a kid who will be bringing friends around.

you should go here http://dogbreedinfo.com/searchcategories.htm they group dog breeds in groups, one that might be of particular interest to you is this group http://dogbreedinfo.com/children.htm where you will find a dog with a similar type of look to a Chow, not quite as cute but just as fluffy http://dogbreedinfo.com/samoyed.htm which are supposedly excellent with children

IwantU Bryan 10-04-2005 09:19 AM
