There's also recent historical scholarship stating that the notion of the "Devil" was edited in to Judaic and Christian texts due to political reasons relatively recently. The Devil definitely plays the "Stick" in the "Carrot and Stick" approach to religion. Redemption changes meaning when there is no Hell.

Sykkboy, you struck on something big there. It seems that religion, at least Western religion, is stuck on the notion of Duality. Either you are or you are not. Either black or white. Either male or female.

As you say, for there to be God there has to be a Devil. If we are to know Good, according to this thinking, we have to know Bad.

This is very Western. And very vulnerable to attack. Jacque Derrida and whole "Deconstructivist" school of literary criticism and historiography tore Plato [and by extension Western thinking and philosophy] a new asshole when they exposed the LIE behind this duality. They reasoned that just as you can define Good with its opposite, defined as Bad... what's preventing you from doing the reverse? Isn't the power to define an extension of political power?

That's why Western notions of religion and spirituality are so foreign to Eastern traditions..namely Hinduism. Death and Slaughter is worshipped in the Hindu pantheon, in the aspect of Parvati called KALI--the Death Mother Goddess. Hindus don't consider her "evil." In the same vein there are Tibetan demons that eat babies, yet they guard temples. This really blows the Western mind since we try to FIX things--ie., youre evil or you're not. We can't seem to understand that life and death are interjoined into a wheel [to use a Hindu metaphor] each rotating in differing grades.
