My son got a promotion today

He just called and announced that he got promoted to engineer (he is a firefighter).

Not only is he the youngest in the history of the department to get hired, he is now the youngest in history to be engineer.

I think the 33% pay increase probably excited him more than the title though. :1orglaugh

What Is A Fireman?

He?s the guy next door - a man?s man with the memory of a little boy.
He has never gotten over the excitement of engines and sirens and danger.
He?s a guy like you and me with warts and worries and unfulfilled dreams.
Yet he stands taller than most of us. He?s a fireman. He puts it all on the line when the bell rings.
A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.
He?s a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.
He?s a gentle man because he has seen the awesome
power of violence out of control.
He?s responsive to a child?s laughter because his arms have held
too many small bodies that will never laugh again.
He?s a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life -
hot coffee held in numb, unbending fingers - a warm bed for bone
and muscle compelled beyond feeling - the camaraderie of brave men -
the divine peace and selfless service of a job well done in the name of all men.
He doesn?t wear buttons or wave flags or shout obscenities.
When he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade.
He doesn?t preach the brotherhood of man.
He lives it.

?I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a firefighter The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the firefighter has to do believe that his is a noble calling. There is an adage which says that, "Nothing can be destroyed except by fire." We strive to preserve from destruction the wealth of the world which is the product of the industry of men, necessary for the comfort of both the rich and the poor. We are defenders from fires of the art which has beautified the world, the product of the genius of men and the means of refinement of mankind. (But, above all; our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men-the work of God Himself. Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even at the supreme sacrifice. Such considerations may not strike the average mind, but they are sufficient to fill to the limit our ambition in life and to make us serve the general purpose of human society.?

Chief Edward F. Croker, FDNY.

Congratulations.

What does the engineer do?

AcidMax 07-25-2005 03:34 PM

Congrats to him. I am a firefighter as well, and there is no better job in the world. I am sure he is proud of his promotion.

Sly: An engineer handles driving and pumping operations from the engine to the fire, basically all aspects of water control, equipment operations etc.

Basically all of the firefighters inside & out depend on him for water.

Congrats to your son baddog :thumbsup

It's funny how our kids can be a handful in the middle of the night when they're just babies and they can be headaches and heartaches when they're teenagers - and then they go and make us so proud when they grow up :thumbsup

Man, you have no idea just how on target that is when it comes to my son.

He has wanted to be a "fireman" since he was 5, and is one of the few people I have ever known that grew up to be what he wanted as a child.

As far as the excitement ont engines and sirens, I was with him last week, and as we were driving down the street he was complaining about some of the b.s. he has had to go thru at work. As we continued down the road a fire truck came towards us with sirens blaring.

I looked over at him and his eyes were as wide with excitement as they were when he was a kid. I could not help but comment that "some kids never grow up."
The following is from a scrapbook he had to do in highschool, where he was lucky enough to get picked to participate in an apprenticeship program.

The engineer is the guy that drives the truck, and is responsible for making sure the proper pressure is set for the length of hose to dispense water and/or foam.

He is the guy that makes it so the firefighters can do their job.

Depends on how you handle it, and the type of schedule you have. All in all I think it leaves a lot of time to do things like this.

A Brooklyn firefighter was arrested yesterday for allegedly steaming up the Internet, trying to lure what he thought was a 14-year-old girl into having sex, authorities said.

Firefighter Ryan Hogan, 24, who allegedly did some of the illicit wooing on a firehouse computer, was arraigned wearing a T-shirt commemorating the Bravest who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

You will find that this excitement is in most firefighters, I mean where else can you play with fire, get into massive waterfights, drive big red fire trucks and experience a brotherhood that is like no other, all while helping people on the worst day of their lives.

There are many motos in the fire service and one of my favorites is:

On their worst day, we bring our best.

There is also, Find em hot, leave em wet :)

There are a few bad apples that ruin it for all the other hard working and honest firefighters. Happens in every line of work.
