The white stuff is water :D
It's crystal clear in some sections, and bright cyan to aquamarine.. amazing.

The camera is a canon 1ds

Thanks for all the comments guys.. :)
All the underground photos are from the Catacombs in Paris..

Essentially, When Paris was being constructed, they mined limestone out in huge mines 25m below the surface of Paris - huge vast chambers. Once construction was complete, people forgot about the void beneath their feet.

As it became more developed, Paris had its memory jogged when entire streets suddenly started falling into the mines. This continued throughout the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th districts, until the reining king of the time decided to form a group (ICG or IGC -I can't remember) to fix the problem. They formed in 1777, and late that year, began work in the quarries, adding walls and tunnels and reinforcements, essentially honey-combing the void, to reinforce it. Work continued as late as 1845, to where it is today, where places still need to be reinforced with more concrete to stop cave ins - yet there are sections where the walls bow like arcs under the weight above.

During the period of construction, Paris had issues with disposing of corpses - and so resorted to dumping the bodies of the dead in certain sections of the catacombs - the ossories - which are the pictures you saw above, as well.

Unlike what people think, the catacombs are incorrectly called so, and a 'technically' known as the 'quarries' - and do not have bones all throughout them.. maybe 1% of the 300+km of tunnels..

lesson over!

All the buildings built above Paris are built from the stone below. That's why they can't build skyscrapers in Paris. The city is standing on bedrock like swiss cheese. After x amount of years in most of europe you are allowed to dig up, throw away, or bury on top of graves. As they expanded the city and dug up cemeteries they would drop the bones down shafts into the quarries.

The bone room in his pics does NOT appear to be on the official tour available to regular tourists. The bones in the legal tourist parts are generally clean, unbroken and geometrically arranged. I'd be willing to bet he got a tour from local cataphiles such as Lezard and Ulrich of Zone Tour or some such similar group.

My main hobby is exploring abandoned places. I've been in those same sections of the Parisian catacombs. I have rolls and rolls of pictures of the catacombs, ww1 and 2 bunkers, abandoned military bases, and abandoned hospitals around europe and the US.

Oh yeah.. I don't really go for public tours :D
I know Lezard, but I didn't go down with him :)

You'll see photos above of a ColdWar Bunker, a German Bunker, and the fountain that a group of monks used to use to make their famous liquer from.

We ate dinner in a German ww1 bunker down there. Verboten this... Verboten that... old chemical toilets all over the place.

I do this kind of thing all over America too. If you're ever over here and want to see an abandoned mental hospital or some abandoned subways around nyc let me know. :thumbsup

sonofsam 07-21-2005 03:24 AM
