What is your ideal country for living?

Hi All. What is your ideal country for working and living.
Im now living in the Philippines and im thinking of Canada as my ideal country for working and living. I always heard some good things about it and good government too i think.

Whats yours?

StuartD 07-15-2005 03:19 PM

There's a trade-off to living in any country. Some have great climate, some have low taxes, some have hot chicks, some have cheap living or a great, politically stable society. No country has everything you could ever wish. Choose the one closest to your heart, the rest you'll learn to deal with.

"For the fourth year in a row, the United Nations has ranked Norway as having the highest standard of living in the world. Sweden, Australia and Canada are next in line, while the United States is further down the scale."

I'm happy where I am.. high taxes and not great weather around the year though

When I was about 13-14 I travelled to Holland and totally fell in love with the country.
I also liked Austria a lot but for me Holland ruled.I`ve always wanted to go back.

Of course, living right in front of the caribbean I`ve always thought that if I had to leave my country I would have to do it for another tropical one.

How bad are the taxes in Norway?

Its socialist, so they're going to be out of control, especially in the upper income brackets.

Jensen 07-15-2005 05:57 PM

taxes aren't that bad in norway actually.. Tax Misery Index from Forbes shows different numbers after how much you earn and if you're married or not, but they have something called Overall Tax Burden that we might be able to take a look at.

Norway ends up with an average of about 45%.. sweden tops the chart with around 53% while Canada has around 35% and the US has around 29%.. UK clocks in around 37% (this is the total taxes imposed at all levels).

Link to list?

I'd be curious as to where its lowest.

Jensen 07-15-2005 06:01 PM

check it out at http://www.forbes.com/home/global/20...30chart_2.html .. only OECD member countries though .. lowest is mexico with around 18%

there is a lot of different numbers for different situations so might be seriously different for some groups than what I posted above

One where I can bang girls with reckless abandon, have cheaper living but a higher quality of life.

Thailand and Brazil come to mind. But there are visa issues with Brazil.

2Pac 07-15-2005 07:05 PM

Canadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Jensen 07-15-2005 07:11 PM

thailand sucks for the general population.. ranked 76th along countries like Oman and Kazakhstan.. brazil isn't much better at 72nd..

I bet that's calculated by the quality of 'free' healthcare, welfare people's quality of life etc.. doesn't mean *I* have it any better in scandinavia than I'd have anywhere else. I use private doctors, I don't take any sort of welfare and I pay shitload of taxes.

That being said, I'd like to move somewhere south (warm) with slightly more reasonable taxes.

I wonder how many people replying to this thread have never been out of their own country.

Before you can jusge which country is the best to live in, you need to see a few different ones.

You were in Amsterdam... The Netherlands is a different country.

You watched Labret and I eat bags and bags of magic mushrooms.

slapass 07-15-2005 10:10 PM

Switzerland is awesome but the cost of living is insane. Rio de Janeiro in Brazil has the best weather of any city I can find. Sort of Miami without the hurricanes.
