Holy Fuck. I just witness a man fall off an 11 story balcony and live.

So I'm over at a friend's condo having a couple drinks on the balcony waiting for the Canada day fireworks to start, when what do we see but a man falling down right in front of our faces. We were on the 6st floor, turns out he fell from the 11th. Thank God the building is right on a river, and it's extremely high right now because we've had a ton of rain, the river is right up to the building. He landed in the water, but it wasn't very deep, he was fucked up pretty bad but not dead.

At first I thought it was a dumb joke, someone threw a dummy over or something, because he didn't yell on the way down. I thought that until I heard him moaning on the ground. So we run down there, get shoulder deep in the river, and find the guy holding on to a branch. He was conscious and talking, although obviously in an extreme amount of pain. Firefighters and the river patrol got there extremely fast and got him into an ambulance. Two weeks ago when the river was lower he'd be a dead man, same if he were in almost any other building in the city, as this one is right on the river like no other I've seen around.

I've been all around the world and I've seen some crazy shit in my day, but this was by far the most insane thing I've ever seen with my own two eyes.

On a brighter note, my buddy was wearing a GFY shirt and a news paper was taking all kinds of pictures with him in them, so that will be funny to see if they publish one of those pictures.

Just thought I'd share, my heart is still pounding and I can't sleep. The guy was literally one or two feet away from my face as he fell, we were all right at the edge of the balcony.

Stupid not being able to edit thread titles.

kaori 07-02-2005 12:23 AM

Damn!!! How did he 'fall'??? Too drunk? :)

Hardlinks 07-02-2005 12:23 AM

Yeah where he landed it was about two feet, maybe a foot and a half. When I found him he was about a foot away from a staircase, if he had hit it I would have been helping drag out a body. Scary shit.

We were leaning off the balcony as well, the fireworks were a little off to the right of this building. Apparently the balcony he was on had a Canadian flag on a pole sticking out, and he tried to lean on it to see better, and it gave out. Stupid move but it could happen to almost anyone after a few too many drinks on a holiday.

alexg 07-02-2005 12:27 AM

what do you mean "fall off"?
did he fall or did he jump in order to suicide?

I should have included that in my first post. It was definitely not a suicide, apparently one of my friends had even seen him leaning over right before it happened and had gotten a little nervous.

If it were a suicide I wouldn't have gotten tits deep in a dirty ass river to try to save his ass. Two showers later and I still feel like calling the fire department and seeing if they can hose me down. :1orglaugh

For anyone familiar with Winnipeg, it was the Assiniboine, not the Red, so I'm not COMPLETELY contaminated.

Fuck thats wild man. My old man lives there too, thats a crazy ass fall.

Its amazing what the human body can survive under the right circumstances and if things unravel a certain way, my neighbour was impaled working in a gold mine in Northern Ontario. 1' pipe through his ass which came out his back just beneath his shoulder. He said the pipe had a pointed (sharpened) end, otherwise hed be dead, the sharpness (he says) stopped it from ripping everything apart, and made clean cuts, most of which the doctors fixed.

This guy walks, talks fucks and drinks beers like all the rest of my neighbours, hes probably about 80% of what he was, if its even that bad, he tells me hes healthier NOW then befor just from the accident and what it did to his outlook, and his will to live and be with his family. BUT for the trauma that body endured its amazing he is even here.

Just thinking about that too, pretty fuckin sad that in a country our size, just from saying 11th story, river and city, we can narrow the location down to one of 5-6 cities..lol

God that's amazing too, it's crazy the kind of things you can survive if you have a horseshoe up your ass.

Just the pole, he was leaning over too far. The worst part was his wife watched the entire thing, she was (obviously) hysterical before we found him and the firefighters got to him and took him too the ambulance.

I use to live on the 7th floor of some building, one day this guy tries to kill himself on my floor, jumps off and hits the grass.. Knocked out and badly hurt, but does not die, no idea how that worked, ofcourse I got to sleep through it, since i'am a heavy sleeper, i missed the news crews, firetrucks and police! haha dammit.

Yup right here in town, I'm not sure of the address, somewhere on Roslyn road in Osbourne, directly across the river from the Parliament building. Should be in the paper tomorrow, I think it was a little late to make it into today's.

My brother died from falling from the same height. He was horsing around drunk on the patio railing and fell over. His lungs, heart and rib cage exited his body on impact. He lived long enough to get to the hospital then it was over.

His ashes have been spread over lake Ontario. His favorite fishing spot. That tore my dad to pieces. My bro was going through his "bad ass" stage and my dad was worried he'd get killed so he went to visit him to talk some sense into him. No go. Later that day he fell.

man i just almost broke out crying.....thats sad, i'm sorry for your loss

iwantchixx 07-02-2005 01:51 PM

I was only 7 years old when it happened. I never really knew him. I last saw him when I was 2 years old. Still though, it affects me a bit. He sounds like he was a cool guy that I would have gotten along with had he lived. My other brother and my sister are stuck up and resentful of me because my dad fucked an 18 year old (my mom at the time) after he split from their mom.

iwantchixx 07-02-2005 01:54 PM

Cripes, every CHristmas my dad gets drinks into him and bawls the night away thinking about his son. It really tore him up that bad. I don't talk to him much, in fact, I saw him twice in the past 18 years. He makes it a point to call me every Christmas to say how much he loves me, he's all choked up badly, I can tell. Then talks a bit about Jamie.

Poor guy.

Jamie had a motorcycle in my Dad's garage for the longest time. He finally sold it 10 years after his death. I wish he would have given it to me like I asked though.

Spunky 07-02-2005 01:55 PM

Holy shit..that dude was extremely luck to have survived
