I opt for the good p-Mobile chips now... my new laptop is 5.5 hours of batt life

I'm not a fan of Toshiba :( go with a Dell :thumbsup

Yep, I agree, Stick with the toshiba satellites. They will do you good!

I purchased a laptop recently and both Toshiba and IBM came highly recommended. I ended up getting a Toshiba Satellite M40... similar specs to yours with a couple of extras like bluetooth, wired ethernet, 802.11a/b/g wifi, and a multi-drive including dual layer and DVD-RAM capability.

The bloody thing is already popping up system errors at startup.

a vote for the Toshiba as well.

My first laptop was an toshiba satellite and that served me very well for a long time. Looks like a masonry block now though.

I suggest you don't get a pentium 4. Look at how heavy the thing is, plus it gets wayyyyy too hot

doesnt look bad but I think for that type of money you could do better. I love my gateway

Also true. I'm told the Pentium M addresses this issue.

toshiba is good but dont dont go with p4 laptop they are very old technology go with centrinos

I would recommend getting a 7200rpm HD, you'll notice the difference.

The battery on my HP kinda sucks. But the one of my wifes HP is pretty damn good,

I heard the manufacturer is/was way behind thats why 7200rpm isnt/wasnt available. Either way this 6000 rocks. Centrino is the only way to go right now

my toshiba sattelite is in the best buy warranty hell hole.....
i will be getting a dell nextime....
my dvdr is dead and my hard drive is mia...
although while it was working it was a powerhouse... HT P4

When it comes to laptops there really is only 1 choice, IBM t series thinkpads. If you are in need of a serious laptop thats your choice. And if your interested in 1 let me know i get wicked discounts at ibm.com being a former employee. I thin they have a t42 special for $1099

15.4 inch widescreen
80 gb 7200
dvdrw
RADEON 64MB
54 wifi

I LOVE the widescreen. Keep in mind that P4, and widescreen make the batterly life shorter. I think I can use it around 2-3 hours without power. But I use it mainly at home/hotels anyway.

When you really want to use it without extra power, go for centrino

Get a laptop with a TFT screen. You won't be disapointed :)

At the very least, do NOT get a P4. Get a Pentium-M or Centrino (=Pentium-M with built in Wifi)

Wifi = Wireless Lan. Even if you don't have WLAN at home, you might want to use it in a hotel, airport, somewhere, sometime

Pentium-M means longer battery life (about 2-4 X longer, not just a little longer), less heat (much easier to keep the notebook on your legs for an hour or two), and virtually NO noise (better for your nerves, remember you sit very close to a notebook)

You can do video encoding on a Pentium-M. A Pentium-M 1.6 equals P4 2.4 or better. Don't be fooled by the low Ghz number, it's a whole different CPU

If you are concerned about speed, get a 7200 rpm drive in your notebook.

I was wondering about that, my new laptop is a 1.73GHz Pentium-M CPU. That number looks kinda low when you're thinking of current desktops or servers, but I figured they wouldn't be moving backwards. :)

Is there a comparison table anywhere?

I was more happy with my sony viao than my dell, but nothing is better than what i got now.

It's not too bad for the price you pay.

The Inspiron 6000 is built well too, it looks stylish and it's solid (no keyboard creaking like most laptops).

Do not buy a toshiba! I got one 3 months ago, the hard drive and DVD drive just went it took 5 weeks to get it back from support. When I got it back the new DVD drive had a broken door. Now it has to go back again. It is the worst computer I've ever purchased! Don't do it! Go Dell or HP!
